I/we are of the Virginia line of Singletons, who ended up in Georgia via both South & North Carolina.
Christopher Singleton, pre-Revolutionary War, was born in England, father of Robert (eldest son), Lt. Col. Matthew, James...and possibly a fourth brother, John Singleton.
Robert Singleton was a Continental quartermaster officer in South Carolina & NC during the Revolution. Christopher Singleton of Brunswick County, Virginia directed and authorized his son Robert Singleton to make use of some 560 acres of Singleton land in SC in support of the American Revolutionary cause. Lt. Col. Matthew Singleton, and his wife, Mary James of Virginia, had settled on 640 acres of James family land elsewhere in SC and fought for the new Republic "concurrently" in SC, too. NOTE: Robert Singleton was "in and out of North Carolina" where he ultimately settled once the Revolutionary War ended.
QUESTION: I do not know the direct line down from Robert Singleton, brother of Matthew Singleton, nor of the one or two other brothers, James Singleton, and perhaps a John Singleton. Help please?
What I DO know is that from the direct line of Matthew Singleton was a son, Robert Singleton; who had a son James Singleton, who had a son, Samuel H. Singleton, who had a son John Chappelle Singleton.
Concurrently, my proved 3X Gt Grandfather, Henry Singleton, had a son, my 4X Gt Uncle, named William Chappelle Singleton.
I/no one I know has ever been able to "factually" name Henry Singleton's father and mother. My/our Singleton family oral history "claims" that Henry Singleton was kin to the line of James Singleton, m. (1) Patsey Bailey, divorced her (2) m. Hester Medlock. But, Henry's name doesn't show up in James Singleton's Will.
The two apparently parallel but different lines of Singletons with two sons having same middle name, Chappelle, is more than a coincidence. They were "close kin".
QUESTION: Can anyone of the line of Robert Singleton of North Carolina, older brother of Matthew Singleton of SC, give me a connection to Henry Singleton, or to an elder Hezekiah Singleton, w. Martha, who died on Henry Singleton's farm in Putnam Co, GA circa 1824?
Some, including me, tried to make Hezekiah Singleton the father of Henry Singleton. This is NOT a provable fact at present. Due to the way all Singleton's helped each other in same common areas of Monroe/Putnum/Upson & related counties in Georgia, there are clearly parallel Singleton family lines descending from Robert, Matthew, James, and perhaps a 4th brother, John Singleton.
Any concrete help, family Bible, obits, etc. would be most appreciated by return e-mail.
