Can anyone tell me anything about a locality called Texas in Meriwether County? On some early maps I have seen it located at approximately the same place as present-day Gay, but it may not be identical with Gay. My great-grandfather William Alexander WATTS, who was b. 1 August 1859 in Meriwether and was orphaned very young. He appears with his mother Lucinda WATTS, a "pauper," and two siblings, in Meriwether 1860 census. Disappears in 1870 census. Reappears in 1880 in Meriwether in household of a Nathan GILL, shortly before his marriage 25 July 1880 to Dorenda Jane GILBERT, daughter of Henry GILBERT and a KENNEDY. He always stated that he was orphaned early and placed in care of foster parents who took him to "Texas." I don't think he meant the state, but that was always assumed. Have not found him listed in state of Texas or elsewhere in 1870. Then I noticed a Texas community on early maps of Meriwether. He appears in censuses for Meriwether with his own household in 1900 and 1910, then in Pike County in 1920 and 1930. He d. 2 June 1936 at home of his son, John Wesley WATTS, in Lovejoy, GA in Clayton County.
