After the railroad came through this area in the mid-1800's the community, that is now Ludowici, was known as Johnston Station. Named for Mr. Allen Johnston, one of the earlier settlers. The community had also been Liberty City for a few years. In 1905 William Ludowici, a German roofing tile manufacturer, who had located his plant there two years earlier, made a generous contribution to the new school building being erected, was honored by the town name being changed to Ludowici. The school building served Long County as Ludowici High School until the early 1950's.
