That is an interesting point you make about the photograph of the Confederate soldiers I referred to on page 36 of “The Hart of Georgia”, and could well be correct.

However, the same photo appears on page 200 of “Beneath These Waters – Archeological and Historical Studies of 11,500 Years Along the Savannah River” by Sharyn Kane and Richard Keeton, 1993. In this publication, the photo is captioned “William Thomas Bailey and his Brother Henry M. Bailey of Hart County, Company C, 16th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, stood at attention in their uniforms during the Civil War’.

I have also been told that the photo is (or was) on display at the Getteysburg Battlefield Museum. I don’t know if it is captioned or not.

Since my original post of November 6, 2006 I have identified and corresponded with Dr. Keith Bohannon. He is in the History Dept. at West Georgia State University in Carrollton, GA. He told me that he wrote the article “many years ago for a magazine titled “Military Images” and he had no further information on the family or the Griffin Bailey that was a brother of William Thomas and Henry M. Bailey.

Dr. Bohannon told a cousin of mine (now deceased) that he got the photo from the Georgia Archives and that it had been obtained by them in the Vanishing Georgia project back in the early '70's. That was a program where the University of Georgia sent out teams to each county seat in Georgia and asked people to bring old photographs in for copying so that they could save them in the Archives. So probably someone in Hart County had the original photograph at one time. I have been unable to find out who that was.

By the way, are you related to this Bailey family?
I think you misread page 36 of "The Hart of Georgia." I don't believe the picture of the two Confederate soldiers are the Bailey brothers. This picture came from the Georgia Department of Archives and History. The caption reads that they "typify the fighting soldiers of the Confederacy." All the other photos identify the soldiers pictured, but not this one. I think this photo was included in the article just to give an idea of what the typical soldier looked like. It is misleading to say the least. The Keith Bohannon you are inquiring about in all probability worked for The Hartwell Sun, the newspaper in Hartwell, and may not have any connections with the Bailey family there.

Bobby, do you have any info on Amie/Amy Richardson who married John Farmer? I can't find them on a census until 1860 Floyd Co., GA. I do find a John Farmer in 1840 Elbert Co. and a J. Farmer in 1840 Floyd Co., but I don't know if either of these is the one who married Amie/Amy. I really would like to find them in 1850 to see the names of their children. By 1860 there are no children with them; only two orphans who, I imagine, are their grandchildren.

I'm interested in any information on Caswell Farmer who married Mrs. Mary Fain in Elbert Co., GA, in 1845. They are in the Hart Co. 1870 and 1880 censuses. I am particularly hoping for information on Caswell's parents. I wonder if they might be John and Amie/Amy Richardson Farmer. In 1849 a Caswell Farmer bought land in Floyd Co., GA, from a John Farmer.

I have a lot of info on the Job Bowers genealogy. Although I am descended from the second Job, brother of Edy, I do have some info on the Edy Bowers line. I also know someone here in Canon, Ga who is a descendent of that line and does genealogy. On your line, I only have that Eve married Martin Fowler, but I have heard of Martin Fowler all my life. I see where Henry Tom Bowers, brother of Eve, had a daughter Elizabeth, who also married a Fowler, Pete Fowler. Elizabeth was born 1906. Are you coming down the line from Ira, or going up, farther back?

I was very glad to here from you today.

My Great Great Grandparents were Emasiah S. Brock and Mary Jane Bruce Brock.

Their oldest son was William Welborn Brock b. Oct. 16, 1855
he appears to have been married twice: Julia Rice and Dora (Docia) Fergurson.

I was looking for his family because I believe I might have some photos that they could help me identify. Also, I would love to learn more about my Brock line.

My Great Grandfather (son of Emmasiah and Mary Jane) is Wade Pressley Brock b. Sept. 1866. He was the 5th out of their 10 children.

The information that I have gathered from the census about William Welborn Brock follows:

CENSUS

1910 Census, Hart County, Georgia
William (54) Note: the entire family born in S.C.
wife: Julia S. South Carolina
wife: Willie May (24) b. Georgia
son: William C. (3) B. Georgia
son: Victor B. (1) b. Georgia
son: Andrew J. (0) b. Georgia

I have his obituary but it is not close at hand. William died April 17, 1952 at his home in Lavonia, Georgia.

I would love to hear from you and I have information accumulated over the years that I can share.

You can post your reply or email me direct at mybrockfamily@comcast.net.

Thank you.
Gail Smith Boyle
Joppa, Maryland

They moved from GA to Miss. around 1857 and Nancy may have died on the way. They went from there to Lousiana and then on to Texas.
The 1870 census shows JMC, Sr. as born in S.C. I have unclear info on JMC's brothers and sisters. There are: Mary Lavinia, Nancy L., Sarah S., Carol L., Benjamin, David Louis, Robert and Frances. There may be more.

Maybe if you tell me what you have and exactly what you're looking for I can be of more help.

I am researching one of my wife's lines. She is descended from Elizabeth A (Elrod) Sudberry, who I believe to be the daughter of a Zach and Sarah (Pool?) Elrod. Elizabeth (Betty) was a long-time resident of Hart County, GA where she died. She had two sons, William Henry and Samuel Joseph and possibly one other child who died 1900-1910. I have been told that Elizabeth's parents were both full-blooded Cherokee Indian. Am willing to share what little I have uncovered so far and am interested in anything on this line.

The closest I have to that date is James Madison Carter, Jr., born May 14, 1866 in Vicksburg, Ms. He died in Texas in 1917. He's my g-grandfather. The family's prior residence was in Georgia. If this sounds close, let me know and I can give you more detail.

Morris Family DNA Project

Hi Everyone,

My Name is Wendy Ramirez and I am one of the Co-Administrators for the Morris Family DNA project.

Many Morris Families came into Georgia Very Early including some of the Morris lines I am related to, Morris is a fairly common Surname and we are in the Process of trying to Identify the many different Morris lines related to each other through DNA. Many of these Families came into Georgia from Virginia and North Carolina. We have been testing many of these Virginia and North Carolina lines.

If you are a Male Morris and would like to participate and hopefully identify which Morris Family line you are descended from DNA testing is a wonderful Tool. Women can participate by asking a Male member of the Family to test for their line, this can be a father, brother, uncle, cousin etc..

Right now FTDNA (Family Tree DNA)is running a 1/2 price sale on a combined Y-DNA (Paternal DNA Test) and a MTDNA (Maternal DNA Test) we would love to have you participate but the sale only runs thru Wednesday 6-24-09

If you are interested or would like additional information Please feel free to send an e-mail to me at:

wendyramirez2608@yahoo.com or morrisdna@att.net

Thank You

Wendy Ramirez

In looking the the books, "The Hart of Georgia," A History of Hart County, Georgia, by Savannah River Valley Genealogical Society and "Pioneers of Hart County, Georgia" by Harold Travis Parker, there is a John Columbus Wilson that was married 1st to Martha E. Wade and 2nd to her sister, Milly Jane Wade. This also lists the children.

In the book, "Hart County, Georgia Marriages 1854 to 1898" by the Savannah River Valley Genealogical Society, it lists a John C. Wilson to Martha E. Wade on 7 Jan 1874.

There is a listing in the the cemetery book for a John C. Wilson born 1848; died 1928 and he is buried at Providence Methodist Church. There are a few more Wilson's buried at Providence Church. If you think this may be him, I could look in the newspaper and see if I can find his obit on my next trip to library.

There were/are at least two churches serving the Shoal Creek community: Shoal Creek Baptist Church and Providence Methodist Church. If your ancestor is buried in the community, he is likely buried at one of these church cemeteries. Both have many headstones that are unreadable & thus couldn't be documented for the indexing project.

Happy Hunting!

I am looking for information on Dr. Henry Page. I think he may be William J. "Henry" Page. I have medical records showing that he is the father of William Henry Cheek, mother Ritter Cheek. The records show that William Henry Cheek has a brother and sister, and half sister. The record shows that William Henry Cheek was illegitimate. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Peggy

I am sorry, I do not. This is what the medical records says (from what I can remember, I am at work). It list William Henry as the illigitmate son of Dr Henry Page and Ritter Cheek, and he was born in Hart County, GA. The record says that his father died in a hospital in Georgia. It said that his father died of whiskey, etc. So I am assuming that he was an alcoholic. This medical records were from 1913 and 1915, so Dr Page died sometime before then. According to the records, William Henry Cheek was born about 1877, he is listed as 36 years old. It says that his mother was 20 when he was born. Any help is greatly appreciated.
