I would like to have information, help or any suggestion on how to locate my BRYANTS before 1900. I have tried the 1880 and earlier census but no luck. From the 1900 and 1910 I know they were in Chipley Ga and one of their neighbor was a white family by the name of HUGSLEY.

Peter Bryant was born around 1846 in Georgia. His second wife was Mollie Bryant (not sure of Mollie maiden name). Mollie was also born in Georgia around 1870. Peter and Mollie had 7 children together, the first child was born in Chipley Ga in 1893.

Peter had children from his first marriage I found two daughters on the 1900 census, one was name "ARY" a daughter born 1879 in Georgia and a daughter "Clara" born 1882 in Georgia. I believe that Clara also was known as Laura. If this is true Laura Bryant married John Copeland and stayed in Chipley after the family moved to Atlanta Fulton Georgia.

I been told that AA research is hard, but I am new to this and I beleive I will find my BRYANTS.

If anyone have any information or suggestion please email me.

Thanks to all in advance.
D E Rogers
Ga marriage books of 1840 to JULIA "JULY" ANN HAYES b ca 1824 . They are then found on the 1850 Randolph Co. Al census and live next to THOMAS KIMBREL b ca 1808 S.C and wife CASSA ? b 1810 S.C. There is a ELIZABETH ? b ca 1784 S.C. living with THOMAS and CASSA on the 1850 census. Both of these family's are found in Harris Co. Ga and in Randolph Co. Al , the THOMAS I think may be JOHNs brother but not for sure. The last time I find JOHN KIMBREL is on the 1860 Randolph Co. Al census, but I find his wife JULIA in 1870 in Randolph Co. Al and the last name is spelled KIMBRIEL JOHN may have died by this time.(and this is also how the last name is spelled on a deed that i have of JOHN). I will share all the info that I have .I have come to a dead end and if anyone has any info and can share it with me i will appreciate it Thanks Steve

Children of JOHN and JULIA KIMBREL

MARY or POLLY b 1841 Ga
MARTH A. b 1843
JOHN G. b 1845
JAMES WILLIAM b 1846
RUFUS b 1849
FRANCES M. b 1852 Married WILLIAM ALLEN TAYLOR
My gg-grandparents WILSON W.
Isham Harris and David Harris

Isham Harris of Jasper Co, GA and David Harris Jr of Newton Co, GA were sons of David Harris Sr who died shortly after 1820 in Clarke Co, GA. DNA tests for descendants of two other sons have shown that David Harris Sr descends from another surname with a very unusual heritage. There is more to be learned and I will pay for additional DNA tests by male Harris descendants of Isham and David Jr. This is a simple, salvia-like test that would be a big help to understanding this ancestry. Please contact me at ted.mcclellan@gmail.com for more information.

NEWSOM / NEWSOME Family Reunion in Columbus area

This announcement is directed to descendants and families of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM who married 1816 in Warren Co, GA, and were in Marion Co, GA, in 1830; Harris Co, GA, in 1840, and Musocgee Co, GA, 1850; as well as any other persons who are researching this branch of the family. We are planning two events that you may be interested in participating in, and perhaps even in helping to plan:

1) We will be holding a NEWSOME family info and photo swap-meet on the same weekend as the Golden Acres NEWSOME Family Reunion in Phenix City, AL, which is held the first Saturday in August (this year it's August 2, 2008). The time and place for the swap-meet are yet to be establshed - probably in the afternoon / evening of Saturday, August 2. Several local NEWSOME cousins have already expressed an interest in attending, and we hope to have representatives from as many of the NEWSOME children as possible. Already included on the contact list are descendants of brothers John NEWSOME, William Anderson NEWSOME, James NEWSOME, Henry M. NEWSOME, and George Washington Freeman NEWSOME, and sister Elizabeth (NEWSOME) BELCHER - and possibly brother Carter NEWSOME.

2) An NEWSOME Family Reunion, to be held in the Spring of 2009 in the Columbus-Phenix City area. This will include ALL of the descendants (with spouses and families) of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM, who married 1816 in Warren Co, GA; were in Marion Co, GA, in 1830; in Harris Co, GA, in 1840; and the widow and children being at Clapp's Factory in Muscogee Co, GA, by 1850. While we will welcome descendants on collateral lines (STATHAM, MORRIS, PIKE, ABNEY, PAGE, etc.) and NEWSOMES from other branches as well - we espeically want to get the word out to as many direct-line descendants of James & Elizabeth as we can.

The timing of the All-NEWSOME Reunion will probably coincide with the United Daughters of the Confederacy ceremony to dedicate the new military grave markers of our NEWSOME kin and others at the Clapp's Factory Cemetery - this ceremony is tentatively scheduled for March 2009. We are working on applications for VA-provided markers for Carter NEWSOME (1818-1896), John NEWSOME (b. 1820), Asa NEWSOME (b. 1823), William Anderson NEWSOME (b. 1826), and James NEWSOME (1834-1894) - we have service records for all these men and know Carter, John, and James are buried at Clapp's Factory; we suspect Asa and William Anderson are as well.

We are also looking for candidates to participate in the NEWSOME surname DNA study project as well - perhaps you know of a male with the surname NEWSOME in your branch who would be willing to participate?

Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in one or both of these events and fill me in on if you've learned anything new lately about your NEWSOME ancestry. I look forward to hearing from each of you! Thanks!

Cousin John in TX

John Mallory Land
10118 Timber Trail Dr.
Dallas, TX 75229-6023
469.995.5222
retrofit@flash.net

I'm trying to find my gr gr grandfathers family. James H. Buchanan was possibly born in Muscogee Co. He married Nancy Ellen Hardin b. 1822 Chester Co., SC (d/o of Robert Walker Harden & Priscilla Gresham) on 6/6/1843 in Harris Co., GA and they lived in Meriwether Co. where they had 2 children Priscilla Ann and Robert Larkin Buchanan) before moving to Union Parish, LA in abt 1847. Does anyone know something about the Buchanan's (or various spellings of it) in these 3 counties? I know there was a Jesse Buchanan and wife Mary Sparks with a son Benjamin that had a plantation and Mary is buried near Hamilton, GA; but I can't find anything more on them. I'd appreciate any info that ya'll have. Thank you, Nelda http://www.geocities.com/tnbrat2/

Also, are there any other cemeteries in the vacinity? We are researching the William B. Clark and Elizabeth Clark family that lived in the area from 1840? to 1880? It appears that William B. Clark's 1st wife died abt 1839 and he married Elizabeth Clark. William B. Clark is our G-G-G Grandfather and we would like to find out who his 1st wife was, our G-G-G Grandmother. We're planning a trip to Harris Co. soon and would love to connect with someone who knows the area and has info.
I am trying to find out what happened, to the 400 acre plantation, that was owned by Pleasant M.,and Malinda White-Benning? I know it was located in Harris County, near the present town, of Waverly Hall. The Benning couple moved there in 1832. I would appreciate, any information, on this property. Thank you

Does anyone live in Harris County, I am seeking data on Crawford Cemetery, I don't live in that area but if anyone can tell me if this cemetery is on the side of the road or on someone's farm or anything. I can't seem to find anyone who can help me but I will drive down that way just to check out the cemetery. From what I see it looks as though it is just down the road from Chipley Historical Center from Google maps. And I have tried calling them but the phone just rings. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
chelle

Smith/Simpson/McAffee Families of Harris County, GA

I have been searching for additional information on Mary Ann McAfee daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Buchanan McAfee. She was the step daughter of Jesse Roberts.

Recently the State of Georgia has posted Death Certificates on the Archive website. In searching for Harris County, GA death certificates, I came across one for Katherine Nelson Simpson Mobley. Her death certificate list the names of James Simpson and Mary Ann McAfee. In the Harris County marriages listed on that website there is a marriage for Mary Smith to James Simpson 8/16/1845.

In the 1860 Harris County Census there is a Mary Ann Simpson age 49 (according to the bible record where we think her name was transcribed wrong Mary Ann McAfee was born 9/29/1810)
C. M. Simpson age 14 (Katherine Nelson Simpson was born 6/20/1846)
O. P. Smith age 26
J. T. Smith age 23

I believe O. P. Smith is Oscar Smith living in the household of Charles Smith in 1870.

Charles Smith is in the 1850 census also living alone. When Katherine Nelson Simpson married Reuben Mobley, she was married at the home of Charles C. Smith, I believe he may be her half brother.

Any information on these families would be appreciated.

I have not been able to find the Simpson family in the 1850 Georgia census records.

Adger S Ellison of Ellerslie hit by train 1905

This article from the Columbus Ledger appeared on 8 Nov 1905:

78 YEAR OLD MAN LOOSES BOTH LEGS

Col. A. S. Ellison, of Harris County, Run Over by a Train

STANDING SIDE OF TRACK WHEN THE TRAIN HIT HIM

Drawn Under Engine and One Leg Completely Severed from Body – Other One Hung by Mere Thread of Flesh – At the City Hospital

Col. A. S. Ellison, one of the most prominent men of Harris county, and a man of seventy-eight years of age, was this morning run down by a Southern train at Ellerslie, Ga., and both legs cut off just above the ankle. The injured man was given immediate attention after which he was brought to Columbus to the city hospital.
Crowd at Depot Dangerous
There was a large crowd of people at the depot this morning at Ellerslie when the Southern train from Atlanta to Columbus arrived. As the train was slowing down for the station, the crowd pushed . . . . to board it for Columbus where a large number were going to attend the Fall Festival. Col. Ellison was standing on the upper edge of the crown, walking towards the train. He did not guage its speed properly as before he knew it the train was upon him and his extreme age prevented his being able to jump from in front of the train which drew him under it and cut off his legs.
Physicians Called
Two physicians were called to attend Col. Ellison, whose daughter also ran to the train and accompanied him to Columbus where physicians who had been notified by wire of the accident were waiting with an ambulance for the train, which arrived but a half hour late, the time it had waited at Ellerslie after the accident.

Report at Two O’Clock
At the hour of going to press this afternoon the attending physicians reported Col. Ellison to be resting as well as could be expected. His extreme age is a great handicap to his recovery, and it is thought the injuries will prove fatal.
Col. Ellison Prominent Man
Col. A. S. Ellison is a prominent and wealthy planter of Harris county, while he is well known all over the state of Georgia. He has had for many years business interests in Columbus, and his friends here were shocked this morning to learn of the accident.

--- Additional information: Adger S Ellison remained in the hospital in Columbus for several weeks, returning home just after Christmas 1905. He was born 29 Mar 1827 in South Carolina (probably Fairfield district), and died 11 Jan 1911.

Catherine Reuther

A wife and four children survive him, as follows: Officer J[ulius] H[enry] NEWSOM, Mrs. Nancy TARVIN, Mrs. Serena CALDWELL, and Mrs. Mary NEWSOM, all of Columbus. After James’ death ca. 1841, Elizabeth moved the family to Clapp’s Factory in Muscogee County. Carter married there on 09 FEB 1847 to Lucy Ann SMITH (ca. 1828 Clark Co, GA – bef. 1880).

Carter appears as a widower on p. 487D of the 1880 census of Nances District in Muscogee County. With him is his unmarried daughter Mary NEWSOM, age 35. Carter must have remarried, as he was survived by a wife. Carter NEWSOM m. 08 OCT 1878 in Muscogee Co, GA, to Mary TARVIN (LDS IGI NA). Don’t know what her kinship would be to Thomas TARVIN who married Carter’s daughter Nancy – also not clear if this is the same Carter or some other kin.

Nancy NEWSOME m. 26 MAY 1872 in Muscogee Co, GA, to Thomas TARVIN (LDS IGI NA) – in 1880, they are farming on p. 523D, Nances Dist, Muscogee Co, GA. Mrs. Nancy A. TARVIN, wife of Thomas L. TARVIN, d. 02 NOV 1903 in Columbus, GA, aged 53 years.

Julius Henry NEWSOME (ca. 1856 GA – 08 FEB 1923, buried at Riverdale Cem.) m. ca. 1882 to Sinah A. CAIN (ca. 1867 GA – aft. 1923). He was an officer with the Columbus police force.

Carter is the brother of my gg-grandfather, Henry M. NEWSOM (1836-1899). The same individuals and families appear in local records with both spellings (NEWSOM and NEWSOME). I am interested in contacting descendants and researchers on this line – thanks.
Archibald Jackson Williams & Elizabeth Stribling

Archibald Jackson "AJ" Williams was born in Kershaw Co., SC in 1831 and left the area in the 1850s to live in Harris Co., GA. The 1860 Harris County census has A.J. Williams living very close to his uncle David Williams and his family (David's wife is Syntha (Cynthia)). Archibald's household included Elizabeth (wife) and Willis (son). He married Elizabeth Stribling in Muscogee Co., GA in 1856. Archibald is shown to be living in Harris County at the taking of the 1870 and 1880 census. I do not know what happened to Archibald and Elizabeth after 1880 but would like to hear from anyone about what happened to them. Their sons Yancy Davis Williams and Charles J. Williams moved to Bowie Co., Texas (there at the taking of the 1900 census). Besides wanting to learn what happened about Archibald and Elizabeth, I would like to learn what happened to their other children Willis Canty Williams, Thomas Williams, James Williams, Mary Elizabeth Williams, Samuel Williams, and Margaret Williams.

W. P. GUEST (ca. 1829 - 1895 Hines Crossing, Harris Co, GA), watchman at Clapp's Factory

Note: evidently, the name GEIST in this first article should read GUEST instead, apparently the groundskeeper and watchman for the Clapp’s Factory property at the time.

“BRUTALLY BEATEN: THE AGED AND CRIPPLED KEEPER OF CLAPP’S FACTORY COWARDLY TREATED.

“Clapp’s Factory came very near being the scene of a murder yesterday afternoon about dark. Keeper GEIST, who is both aged and crippled, received some very brutal treatment at the hands of Mose UPSHAW, a notoriously bad negro. The negro attacked the old man with a gun, which he used very freely as a club. The old man in attempting to stay his blows, had his left arm broken. Some very severe licks were dealt the old man on the head. A big gash was made on the left cheek and on the back of the head. After beating Mr. GEIST until he was unconscious and almost dead, UPSHAW fled and has not been arrested yet. Mr GEIST is sixty-five years of age. Dr. GRIGGS and Dr. Jack SIMMS were summoned and attended the old man’s injuries. It is thought that he will recover.”

[Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer newspaper, Thursday, 23 NOV 1893.]

“THE ASSAULT ON MR. GUEST.

“MR. CLAPP GIVES AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE AFFAIR.

“Editor ENQUIRER-SUN: You have been wrongly informed as to the ‘GUEST matter.’ He returned from the city between 3 and 4 o’clock the day he was hurt, very much under the influence of whiskey, and on meeting the boy, Mose UPSHAW, cursed him for some time and then got out of his cart and slapped the negro’s face and kicked him and the negro struck Mr.GUEST on the breast with his bat. Mr. GUEST then tried to make his horse ride down the boy, add [sic] after cursing him again he told the negro to wait until he got his gun and returned and he would kill him, with a good many d[amn]s. Mr. GUEST then drove on home, one-eighth of a mile, and got his gun and came back to the negro’s house and passed it to catch up with the negro, who had in the interval gotten his own gun, but was coming away from his own house and away from Mr. GUEST. On Mr GUEST again catching up with the negro, he attempted to shoot him, but only touched him slightly on the back of his neck, then the negro clubbed his own gun and knocked Mr. GUEST down, and the same blow broke his arm. The boy then left for parts unknown. John UPSHAW was not within one hundred yards of Mr. GUEST at any time until after he received the blow and was unconscious. He then went to him with other parties. It was not highway robbery, and did not occur at dark. I had Mr. GUEST carried to his house fully one hour before sundown. It all happened within one hundred yards of more than half a dozen people, black and white. We have a good neighborhood, and no highwaymen, tramps, etc. Respectfully, George M[ilton] CLAPP.”

[Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer newspaper, Sunday, 10 DEC 1893.]

“Mr. W. P. GUEST DEAD.

“Expired Suddenly Near Hines Crossing, Harris County.

“News has reached the city of the death of Mr. W. P. GUEST, which occurred at 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Mr. GUEST was crossing a field near Hine’s Crossing in Harris county, when he suddenly dropped dead, of heart failure. The deceased was about 65 years of age, and had many friends and acquaintances in this city who will be pained to learn of his sudden demise. Mr GUEST was an ex-Confederate veteran, and an honest and upright citizen. He was highly respected by all who knew him. His remains will be enterred [sic] at Clapp’s factory burying ground at 11 o’clock this morning.”

[Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer newspaper, Saturday, 02 APR 1898.]

Does anyone know where Hines Crossing is or was?

I have not yet determined in what unit Mr. GUEST served during the war. I am also interested in any information on his background and family connections.

Is there a kinship to Emma (age 8) and Maud (age 6) GUEST, listed as daughters of John & Agnes ROBISON in their 1880 household on p. 506D in the vicinity of Clapp’s Factory in Nances District, Muscogee Co, GA? Also present are an aunt, Evaline ANDERSON (age 73); a sister-in-law, Sinah MULLINAX (age 34), and a Malinda WRIGHT (age 34), whose relationship is listed as “other.” Note also, three doors away, Gertrude GUEST (age 1), granddaughter of Martha SIMPSON (age 67); also present is Martha’s daughter Mary SIMPSON, a widow, age 30.

I'm also interested in information on Mose UPSHAW and John UPSHAW, their background, family connections, and what became of them.

Thanks - John in TX.
George W. HELMS (ca. 1810 - 1892 Harris Co, GA), buried at Clapp's Factory

“FROM THE EFFECTS OF A FALL.—Mr. George W. HELMS died yesterday morning at 10:30 o’clock at the residence of his son-in-law, thirteen miles north of Columbus, in Harris county. Mr. HELMS had reached the ripe old age of eighty two and his death was from the effects of a fall which he received on the 15th of October. Five children survive him. The funeral will take place at 11 a. m. today and the remains will be interred at the Clapp’s Factory burying ground. Mr. HELMS was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.”

[Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer newspaper, Tuesday, 19 APR 1892.]

Evidently the widower of Louisa J. HELMS (1816 - [after 01 JUN] 1880), buried at Clapp's Factory Cemetery, per an article in The Columbus Ledger Sunday Magazine, 29 JUL 1928. This couple appears on 1880 census of Nances Dist., Muscogee Co, GA, p. 510A, as follows: George W. HELMS (66 NC works in cotton mill), Louisa (64 GA), Sarah (39 GA), Ellen (31 GA), George (29 GA), and Nancy (21 GA). Others in this household include GARDNER (from Rhoda Island), HIGHTOWER, and JENKINS (a Black domestic). All but Louise, Sarah, and JENKINS worked in the cotton mill at the time.

I am still seeking information on this couple’s background, family connections, and children. A death notice appeared on 15 JUN 1901 in the Columbus Enquirer-Sun newspaper for George HELMS, age 30, who was killed in a factory accident in Columbus. He was survived by a wife and two children. His remains were sent for burial to Waverly Hall in Harris County, where his brothers and sisters resided. I suspect he is a grandson of the above George W. HELMS.

Any further information would be appreciated – thanks. John in TX.
I need a copy of the 25 Nov 1831 marriage record of George Washington COLLEY and Matilda RICHARDSON. Does anyone have experience with what information a record from Harris County from that time period might include? Also, cost? How to obtain? I would gladly reimburse someone if they could obtain this record for me.

Also interested in searching probate records for a COLLEY who might have died in Harris County, naming George Washington COLLEY in his estate.

Thanks,
Dee Dee

My g-grandparents, Field Monroe BRADSHAW and Nancy Caroline MILNER, were from Cleola, a settlement in extreme eastern Harris Co., north of Waverly Hall. I have heard rumors of an 1886 hurricane that devastated that part of the county and that "wiped out the Bradshaw family and destroyed their cemetery." If anybody knows anything about this hurricane, I would surely appreciate hearing about it.

Many years ago I found an 1850 Harris Co, Ga, census index; there was a Walter Nunnelee, school teacher, listed as a head of household. Since then I have never seen his name on any 1850 Harris Co, Ga, census!
Could there have been an individual county census or tax census, etc taken in addition to the US Fed Census in 1850??
I believe this man to be my gg-g/father but I can't find this census to see if my g-g/father Eugine L. Nunnelee b1847 is listed in Walter's household. Please help me!
Kathye Upham KUpham@hotmail.com
Harris County Davidsons

Are there any Davidsons on this board who had ancestors living in Harris County in the 1800s? Many of my Davidson ancestors were from Harris and Troup County, GA. Some of them drifted to Chambers County, AL.

My ggggrandfather was John Davidson. He died in 1856 and was 95 years old. He died in Jasper County, GA. He and his wife (unknown name) had six children - all born in GA.

One of his sons was David Davidson - married to Susan Caroline (maiden name not known.). David and "Carrie" had ten children. He died in 1834 and she died in 1894. They lived in Long Cane, Georgia - Troup County.

David's son, my great grandfather, was William R. Davidson. W. R. Davidson and his wife (unknown name) had six children. They lived and died around West Point, GA - Harris County. Most of my research says my family of Davidsons were Presbyterian (and Masons).

I "think" with that many children that some of my direct Davidson line could still be around the area. If so, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Anna Gayle Davidson McClure

John W. Nash and Mary Frances Mahan were both born somewhere in Georgia as per the 1850 census where they lived in Alabama, Shelby County. One daughter named Drucilla was born in 1844 in Georgia. In that 1850 Shelby County, AL census, a 71 year old man appears named Wyman Mahan born in South Carolina. I have located a John William Nash and Frances Mahone marriage license dated July 13, 1843 in Muscogee County, GA which I am fairly certain are my relatives. However, I have been unable to locate either name in the 1840 and 1830 census that might be their families in Muscogee Co. Does any of this ring a bell out there with somebody?

The Clapp's Factory Cemetery Preservation League will meet on Sunday, October 8, 2006, at 425 3rd Avenue in Columbus. The General Membership Meeting will begin at 1 pm and will include a presentation, "The Past and Future of the Clapp's Factory Cemetery," by CFCPL President John Land. Refreshments will be served, and the meeting is open to the general public.

There will be a brief business meeting, during which the membership will elect the Directors for the new year, as well as Chairs for the recently created Standing Committees (Membership, Publicity, Fund-Raising, Site Monitoring, and Research). If anyone is interested in serving on any of these committees, please let me know.

The membership meeting will be followed by a meeting of the CFCPL Executive Board, and all are welcome to stay for that.

Please mark you calendar and plan to come. Also, pass the word to anyone you know who may be interested in attending - we would like to get as many folks involved as possible. A number of Harris County families lived and/or worked at Clapp's Factory over the years, and some Harris County residents may be among those buried in the cemetery.

Thanks,

John Mallory Land
President, Clapp's Factory Cemetery Preservation League
469.995.5222
retrofit@flash.net
