FORTs in Harris County Ga.

Posted: 9 Oct 2004 11:42AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: FORT; MARTIN; WILLIAMS; ALBRIGHT
While researching my mother's line (Williams), I ran across HISTORY OF HARRIS COUNTY GA, 1827-1961 by Louise Calhoun Barfield, 1961. There are several Forts mentioned, though none directly in my line. I thought I'd jot them down for the benefit of any other Fort researchers. I hope this helps someone, sometime. See my further notes at the end.

REMINISCENCES OF Mrs. J. B. Fort
Mountain Creek Baptist Church was organized in 1829 in the home of Rev. J. W. Cooper. It was located across the road from the home of Mrs. Fort and south of the White Cemetery and north of the Mountain Creek in which many of the early members were baptized. A cemetery of a few of the slaves is marked only by field rocks.
The property is owned today by E. L. Truett (Lot 282—20 District).

The White Farm Land
The Fort farm passed through many hands, as the early deeds of Mrs. Fort indicated. Among owners have been the Cooper family, the White family, and her father, 0. L. Williams, who gave the place to Mrs. Fort. She loves it with all of its history. Many landmarks and sites of nearby Whitesville have passed away. Few people remember where they stood.

[Further Notes from Tom Fort, 10-9-2004]
Several trees on the internet have the father of Robert Emmett Fort, Miranda Fort as having been born 28 Nov 1806 in Milledgeville, Putnam County, Georgia. [Note: Milledgeville is in Baldwin County, borders Putnam on the south.] Others have the same date with a birthplace of Virginia. There are trees that have Miranda as son of the Edwin Edward Fort ("A Family Called Fort", p30) that married Lucy Lane of Brunswick County, Va and "may have moved to Hancock County, Ga." about 1810. Hancock County borders both Baldwin and Putnam on the east.
