George W. West, b. abt. 1819 in Spartanburg, SC

Hello,

I'm trying to solve a genealogical mystery that involves an ancestor who lived out the last half of his life in Forsyth County. Any help - or any connections with cousins researching the same line - would be much appreciated!

I'm trying to find out who were the parents of George W. West, b. abt. 1819 in Spartanburg County, SC. In about 1840, he married Jennet (Jenny) Cowan, b. about 1816 in Country Antrim, Ireland.

They showed up in the Union County, SC censuses in 1840 and 1850. In about 1853, they moved to Georgia, settling in Forsyth County in about 1854. (I'm not sure where they lived beforehand, which is part of the mystery!)

Basically, I want to confirm or deny whether my George W. West is the son of George West and Edith Colista McHanie (from probably Spartanburg County, SC and died in Gilmer County, GA.)

I've seen genealogies with my George included with this family, but haven't yet found a record to prove that he belongs in that group. On the other hand, many genealogies leave him out.

If you have any information about this family, please contact me. I've worked them very hard and have a lot to share with you, too.

Tangentially, I'm also interested in the West descendants who carried on further west from Forsyth County, Georgia. Many of George W. West's children went to Arkansas, and I would love to reconnect.

Forsyth County Georgia Deeds and Districts

Hello,

I'm researching my ggggGrandfather George W. West (b. about 1820 Union County, South Carolina d. 1895 Forsyth County, Georgia.) I'm specifically trying to find his gravesite.

I recently found his Estate Case at Forsyth County Probate court and it says that, since he died intestate and none of his children stepped forward to administer his estate, his land in District 3, Section 1 of Forsyth County. This sale happened about November 1985. Does anybody have any tips about researching this before I make the long drive back to Forsyth County to try and look through old deeds? I would love it if anyone could point me to a map so I could figure out where exactly District 3, Section 1 was. I have a suspicion that since George W. West and his first wife Jennet (Cowen) weren't buried with the churches their families attended (Hightower Baptist in Cherokee County and maybe Concord Baptist in Forsyth County) or with any on of their children that perhaps their graves are at their old home place.

Any information about identifying this home place, or any information about George W. West in general is highly appreciated!

I have been trying to locate any information on my father's side of the family. He is John L. Crow, Sr., born April 5, 1912 and died December 23 1983. His father was Brice Lofton Crow. All I know about him is he was born in Forsyth County in the 1880's or 1890's. He is buried in Americus, Ga.

I would like to make contact with someone that has any history of my ancestors and when and where the first came to America.

I saw your post - I'm Robert E McCoy's granddaughter; George Ervin McCoy and Azalee Pirkle are my great grandparents.

George Ervin McCoy b. 02 Nov 1877 d. 05 Nov 1932
married Mary Azalee Pirkle on 28 Dec 1896.
She was born on 22 Jan 1877 and died 01 Feb 1944. They both lived in Forsyth County all their lives and are both buried in Friendship Baptist Cemetery in Forsyth.

There were six children:

Robert Everett McCoy b. 08 Mar 1914 in Forsyth County, GA
d. 03 Aug 1977 in Cobb County, GA
m. Maude Margaret Voyles
b. 02 Mar 1918 in Forsyth County, GA
d. 30 Aug 1983 in Cobb County, GA
They are both buried in Georgia Memorial Cemetery close to my mom.

They had five children. All are living except my mom. I don't typically give out info on a forum like this for the people who are living - but you can contact me directly.

The other children of George E and Azalee McCoy (all born in Forsyth County):

Clarice M McCoy (if I remember correctly her middle name was Minnie but they called her Nettie). She was born on 28 Apr 1900 and died 03 Aug 1977 in Fulton County. She married Norman Pilcher (21 Oct 1901 to April 1974) and they had five children.

Wilfred R Kellogg McCoy (b. 26 Dec 1903 and d. 04 Jan 1978 in Forsyth) He married Estelle Tatum (b. 24 Mar 1909; d 25 Jan 1976 in Forsyth). They did not have any children and are both buried at Zion Hill Cemetery in Forsyth.

Alice Lucille McCoy (b. 1910 d. 16 Apr 1935) She died young and did not marry.

Edith Fay McCoy (b. 14 Dec 1911; d. 02 Nov 1964 in Fulton County). She married Lee Marion Edwards (b. 12 Mar 1911; d. 03 Mar 2003). They had five children.

Gladys Caroline McCoy (b. 1906 d. 26 Sep 1991) She was married but not sure to whom.

I'm descended from John Wiley (A) Fowler and Nancy "Nicey" House, and am stumped as to who his parents are. John was born in Georgia in 1795 and died in Coosa County AL in 1845. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anyone know who his parents are?

I am searching for my birth father. I believe his name is James Ethan Bennett. I don't know his date of birth, but I know he married my Mother, Nancy Farner in October of 1979. I was born with his last name and later adopted by my stepfather. I know that his mother went by Kay and that he had a twin, I think his twin may have been a female. This is pretty much the extent of my knowledge. If anyone with information regarding James Bennett or his family, please let me know. I would like to locate him and get to know him, if he agrees.

Allen Young and Mary Goddard are my GG Grandparents as well. (My grandmother, Mary E Irwin, was daughter of Rilla Young).
I wonder if anyone has evidence that Allen Young's wife Mary Goddard is the same as Mary Clarinda Goddard? I have my doubts, I'm thinking they are different people. Searching records for Allen Young there are numerous entries for his wife as Mary E Young, I've never seen a Mary C Young.

The Don Shadburn book indicates that Mary Clarinda Goddard married a Sweat, which also casts doubt that she is the same Mary Goddard married to Allen Young. My grandmother always said she had Cherokee blood and I believe it but it may not be the Tidwell to Suzannah Sonocooie connection as I had hoped. I'd appreciate any clarification anyone may have. I believe I am a relative of Hiram Taylor. I'm not sure about David. I have see the Forsyth Co. census and know that Hiram lived in the old Milton County, Georgia and is buried in the Warsaw Cemetery in North Fulton County. His wife was Rachel Elizabeth Conger. He also had two sons, Nicholas Harrison and James Middleton who is my Great Grandfather.

Don't remember names of roads, but you go past Sharon Baptist Church and make a left across from the old Buice Store and that will take you to a new high school. Mike lives across from the high school back off the road in a log cabin. Hope this helps. Thanks. Jimmie

OK, I understand. But Lightfoots from England!? I see more Indian lineage from Nancy Ga Ha Go ?. We know that is Cherokee. Be interesting to see what you find in documentation. Jonathan listed on Patrick Bailey's 1850 census (pg 87 of Dist 31, Forsyth GA census). Public member trees report mother as Amanda Tripp (I have not been able to confirm).

A marriage of Patrick & Sarah Ann Long (1849) is confirmed.

I am researching another possible marriage of Patrick & Nancy B, which my 4th great-grandfather, Thomas L., would be a son.

I put that in from another researcher and to be honest with you, I am just starting to research documents on that lineage. I will be going over others documents and if they come out correctly then I will keep it or change it. I am sorry that there is confusing right now on my chart with that name. Janis, in the latest update of the Fowler tree, there is an Elizabeth the gg-grandmother of Dorcus Benge Lightfoot. Info shows she was born in Oregon in February 16, 1602. Is this correct? Five years before Jamestown and many decades before it was settled by white men?

The following John B. Sanders was born in SC in 1810 and grew up in Cherokee/Forsyth/Hall Cos Ga. He migrated to Shelby Ala possibly in the 1840s. He married twice, once in Ga.He was the son of Isaac Sanders and wife Catherine, who was born in 1786 NC and listed on the 1850 census for Cherokee Co Ga near my GG Uncle Jeffrey Sanders b Rutherford Co NC in 1806. Jeffrey migrated to Forsyth Co and many of his children and grandchildren settled there. In the 1860s Jeffrey moved back to NC.I am trying to find a connection between this family and mine. Jeffrey's father is documented as William Moses Sanders b 1774 Anson Co NC. to Spartanburg and into Rutherford Co NC where he died in the 1840s. Thanks for any information on this family.

I recently inherited some photos of my ancestors. The pictures are very old and have been kept up for the most part. On the back of one of the photos it reads: Eliza Hays, Amargol,VA. I was told that it was my great grandfathers mother or grandmother. His name was John W. Ingram who married Sallie L. Warren from Caswell County, NC. If you have been to the cemetery at Sharon Church then look a little farther to the left facing the grave of Walter and down the hill toward the front of the cemetery and you will find his grandfather Forast, Cassandra and Margaret's gravesites. I think your Nathaniel Tatum is the father of a Riley Tatum b. 1814 in North Carolina. I think Nathaniel married a Mary Ann Plummer. I've found a marriage record for them dated 25 April 1810 Baldwin County, Georgia.
The other children I find are:
Jesse Hawkins b. 11 Jun 1832 NC
Edward b. 13 Jun 1818
Parthena b 22 Aug 1823 in SC
L Tatum b. 1828
W.W Tatum b. 1839

I found most of the children's information on a Rootsweb World Connect site.

I have further information about Riley Tatum, but I would really like to know more about his father Nathaniel Tatum b. abt 1780 in North Carolina. I think he is related to the Nathaniel Tatums who came from England, but can't find a connection.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I would love to have any info you can give on the reeses. My husband is the son of Clifton Agbert, s/o George William s/o Samuel Posey. At this point we lose the line. We know that S.P. is the son of a Samuel but can't get anymore information.

Angela, Do you have info identifying Georgia Ann Ledford's parents, birthplace or anything else on her. I find several Georgia Ann Ledfords on Ancestry. One tree suggests husband John and another James Madison Pendley. There is a death and burial for Georgia Ann Pendley in Hill City, Gordon County, Ga. Turn off of Browns Bridge Road (Hwy 369)onto Shady Grove Road; Take a Right onto Heard Lane; Take a Right onto Heard Road; Go past boat dock/park on right side at big curve; go further and after a big curve to the right you will find a chain link fence on the corner of a driveway/road on the right side where the Fowler Cemetary is.

If one goes past Heard Lane, you will see a church on the right side and can turn right onto Heard Road there.

Just saw the map to Aaron and Elizabeth's graveyard. I cannot read some of the words near the lake.
I see Church (???) and Young ??? sign. Can you fill in for me?
Also do you know the name of the cross road at the sign?
I have lost a couple of family cemeteries for 1700 and 1800s because of uncaring new landowners.

Looking for Wooten's in the Forsyth Georgia area

I am hoping to find a lead on one of my ancestors. His name was Samuel Wooten. He was born about 1815 in Georgia, but shows in the 1880 census as living in Militia District 466, Monroe, Georgia. He was married to a woman named Amanda. Samuel Wooten is of African-American descent. His race shows as Mulatto.

If he was born around 1815, I would suspect his parents were born somewhere in the neighborhood of 1774-1785. I do show a white gentleman by the name of John Wootan born about this time and lived at some point in Division 60, Monroe Georgia. Would anyone have any possible leads on Wooten's that lived in the Monroe, Georgia area? I suspect they could have also come from some place like North Carolina or South Carolina and settled in Georgia.

Any leads would be truly appreciated.
