I am searching for the parents of Ephraim Scruggs. From the 1870 census I know his birth year was about 1840. He listed both of his parents as born in Georgia, but I'm not too sure of this since it was before the Land Lottery. (Unless one or both of his parents were Cherokee?) In 1870 he and his wife and children lived in Pickens County (Dug Road District), Georgia.

He married Tabitha Evans sometime before 1863. Their known children are a daughter born about 1858, a son John born between 1859 and 1860 and a daughter, Martha Ann born November 01, 1861. Martha Ann Scruggs was my g-g-grandmother. (She married Barney Adams and had three daughters before dying young -- buried Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Pickens County.)

Ephraim died sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census. By the time of the 1880 census, Tabitha and her two youngest children, John and Martha Ann, were living in Dawson County (Yellow Creek District) with her father, John Evans, two sisters, and her mother-in-law Mahaly (Mahala?) Scruggs age 60 (born about 1800?),

A Meardy (Meredith?) and Mahala Scruggs lived in Forsyth County, Georgia in the 1840s. They were charter members of Friendship Baptist Church. I have not found a list of their children, but wonder if Ephraim was their son?

I live in Ducktown, which is next to Friendship, and I show that Meredith Scruggs, born 1802, died 1850 married Meredith Scruggs. I only have one child in my list. She is a daughter named Rachel Rebecca Scruggs, born Jan. 14, 1824 in South Carolina, died Feb. 3, 1899, and married David Ceago Tallant, Jr. on Sept. 11, 1842 in Forsyth Co., GA. I show that the parents of Meredith Scruggs was Edward Scruggs, Sr. and Mary Edwards. Edward was born about 1775 and Mary was born about 1782 in Cumberland Co., VA. Edward and Mary were married about 1800 in Cumberland Co., Va. I have descendants in the Edwards Family.

Thanks for the reply. From my queries I have been able to determine that Ephraim was the son of Meardy Scruggs and Mahala Pearson. He is listed in Meardy's household in the 1850 Forsyth County census (HH #1936). According to Don Shadburn's second book (the Edwards chapter), Meardy and three of his children died during a typhoid epidemic sometime after the 1850 census. As best I've been able to determine their children were: Martha, Rachel Rebecca, Jacob, William, Mahala, Ephraim and Samantha.

I stumbled upon the Meardy Scruggs family while re-reading Shadburn's first book for my Bannister line. Until that point I thought my only connections to Friendship Church were my Jefferson line and my Aunt Era Tribble and her family -- but I got a big surprise -- the Scruggs were a line that I thought came from South Carolina directly Pickens and Dawson Counties -- I had no idea they helped found the church!

I grew up in the Mica Community over in Cherokee County (I live in Woodstock now), so I'm pretty familiar with the Ducktown and Friendship Church. Do you have any info on an Edwards Family with William and Elizabeth as parents? 1820-1900 Time frame? Lived in Cherokee and Maybe Woodstock? I know she was supposed to have been born in Cherokee? He was from Maryland. Both had Edwards Surname. Any help is really appreciated. This is m big brick wall/Headache family, :-)
