I am a descendent of
Basil Jefferson and Elizabeth
Duval through their son, Thomas E. Jefferson.
Thomas and his wife Mary Frances
Foster, settled just over the Forsyth line in the Cross
Roads District of
Cherokee County -- near
Hightower Baptist Church and the Etowah River. They moved sometime before 1860. The 1860 census lists Thomas as a school teacher and the personal value of his estate was $9,500.
He was a 1st Lt., Company E, 36th Regiment,
Georgia Volunteer Infantry,
Army of Tennessee. He was reportedly killed sometime during the
Battle of Vicksburg and is buried in an unmarked grave there. Mary Frances survived her husband by nearly forty years -- she passed away on October 21, 1901 and is thought to be buried at the
Holbrook Campground Cemetery in
Forsyth County.
Thomas and Mary Frances had three daughters, Mary Elizabeth, Margaret and Eliza Jane.
Mary Elizabeth married James Hiram
Holbrook abt. 1862. I do not know all of their children, but believe they had at least ten. The three that I am certain of are Thomas (abt. 1864), Luella (abt. 1866) and Marcus (abt. 1869). I have been in contact one of Mary Elizabeth's descendents.
Margaret married Joseph
Washington Williams about 1868 in
Cherokee County. They had 12 children.
