My name is Kathrine Slater Beecher of Emanuel County, Georgia. My father was Willie Gwinnett Slater. My mother is Madge Bedgood Slater. I believe both were born in Emanuel, County. My grandmother was Lee Flanders Slater, I have been told that she is of Native American, possibly Cherokee, extraction. Can you confirm if she was partly or entirely Native American?

Thanks,

Kathy

Samuel's wife Louisiana was my ggg-grandmother. Her daughter Susan married Samuel Scarboro (Scarborough) in Emanuel County in 1858. In the 1850 census Samuel McKenzie was living in Muscogee Co GA and was married to Louisiana. Susan was his stepdaughter. He married Louisiana sometime about 1845. Louisiana was also from Jones County and was married priviously to a Jones (Susan's father). The 1850 census list other children for Mr. McKenzie.

I am currently researching my father's family (Scarboro/Ross)

Peggy

Virginia, There was a distribution of slaves from William's estate on 1-21-1857, and James Overstreet was identified as a son-in-law. This is found in the Em Ct or Ordinary Bk A, page 14. It is possible that Sarah might have been a granddaughter though. From Ordinary Ct minutes, p 135 : William Hall became the guardian of Sarah Hall, orphan of James Hall, in Emanuel Co in 1841 (not certain who this Wm and James Hall were).

William Hall, born 1792, d 1857, was the father of Roxie Ann Hall. He was an heir of Juniper Hall Sr who was born 1769, d 1828 Emanuel Co Ga. Juniper had 17 heirs besides his widow, Martha Thigpen, and all but three were named as children of his. William was not named as a child, but many researchers think he was Juniper's oldest son. Most Emanuel records are destroyed, but there is one land record that shows William owned 156 acres on Daniel's Creek, where Juniper Hall also owned property.
William's first wife may have been named Sarah. Or she could have been Martha Fulford - there is a 2/13/1817 Jefferson Co marriage record of her marriage to a William Hall. These are the children I have for William, all from his first marriage: Mary who married Miles Fields; Sarah b 1825 who married James Overstreet; Martha b 1828 who married Henry Scott; Susannah b 5-12-1830 who married William Bishop Jr; Roxey Ann who married James Stevens (Stephens); Emilia b 1836 who married William Moxley; James who married Avy Brown, Henry who married Elizabeth Bishop. William's first wife was apparently deceased by 1850. Juniper Hall Jr, who was also a widower at the time, was residing in Wiliam's household in 1850. The next year. on 2-23-1851, William married his second wife, Sarah Rawles, with whom he had no children.
At his death, James Stevens administered Willim's estate, Book C 1858-1866, p. 118. William apparently died intestate.
James Stephens was a son of William Stephens and Mary Fields, and William was born 1788/9 in Sampson Co, NC.

I hope this helps.

Mary Davis vs. Mary Eason controversy:
Some researchers feel that Mary Eason was William Whiddon's wife because of William Eason of North Carolina's will dated March 1783.. It names his granddaughter Mary Wheddon as an heir. That coupled with several names frequently used by the family have led many to this conclusion. My ggreat-grandfather was Jared Eason Whiddon , my great uncle was Reopard Eason Whiddon and my grandmother was Mary Winfred Whiddon. These are familiar names for both families. I believe that we are related to the Eason family, but I am not sure of connection.
The Will of Benjamin Davis (1790 Cheraws Dist. census) deeds 47 acres to Daniel Davis (1790 Cheraws Dist. census)....Mary Whiddon, wife of William Whiddon (1790 Cheraws Dist. census) , releases to Daniel Davis all her estate.... This information makes me feel that Mary Davis is William's wife. We need further documentation to confirm Mary's real name. I feel sure that the Cheraws group is our family especially with the addition of William Barwick (1790 Cheraws Dist. census). My ggggreat-grandmother Martha Rhoda Barwick who married Dempsey Whiddon of Washington County (William and Mary's son) was William Barwick's daughter who was born in the Cheraws Dist. around 1785. The 1790 Census list the following:
Daniel Davis
Benjamin Davis
William Whiddon
William Barwick
This puts the families in the same area at the same time.
*Other info. There was a Wm. Eason and wife Sarah Mattox that were from Barnville, SC. and died in Tattnall County, Georgia. (Wm. b. 5/22/1771-d. 10/1/1831).
Nancy Fuller

I agree. My contact with him was also very good. We need more people like him and his dedication toward finding the truth about our family. With his work and the work of others like Judy Anderson and Hazel Yarbrough Beatrous, researchers have been able to get a solid starting point for the Whiddon Family. I guess the only thing that is certainly correct in all research is that it is in a constant state of change.

Thanks Lou for the response. I agree that it will be difficult to ever prove Mary's true identity. As I said, my great Uncle from Sandersville was Reopard Eason Whiddon and his grandfather was Jared Eason Whiddon.I have found Gus Adams's information fairly accurate, but Edward Whiddon's information has many mistakes. He and I were in contact concerning my Washington County family, but it was too late for corrections. I visited the cemetery in Emanuel County several times, but could not find any proof of her name. The Durden family that also married into the Barwick family, contends that it was Mary Davis, but I do not know what has led them to that conclusion. Also, there is speculation (no proof) that Benjamin Davis's wife was Mary Eason and that she was also married to a Whiddon. If you have any new connections, please let me know ORETA1@aol.com
Thanks again....Nancy

William, son of William Sr. was married to Mary Eason. There is no absolute proof of this, but there is much circumstantial evidence. I have outlined this evidence in my book "The Whiddon Heritage" published in January.

William, son of Lott may have married Mary Davis, but there is no evidence to that effect.

The name Mary Davis Eason has been generated out of confusion and has assumed a life of its own. There is no such person. They are two separate people. You have added to the confusion with the name Mary Davis Eason Barwick.

The Barwick's were neighbors of William & Mary Eason Whiddon in S.C. Four of their children married Barwicks.

Regards,
Lou

Nancy,

A word about Edward Whiddon. He like all of us struggled with wrong or incomplete information. His data contains some mistakes but mostly at the edges. He tried hard to get it right especially on issues that were central to Whiddon research. He was always open to correcting his data, but only after considering the validity of the new info. Ed was the single best source of Whiddon family history and we have no replacement.

I had the good fortune of working with Ed on several issues including finding a missing link, James son of Eli Green Whiddon that he included on his Website. Ed was a gentleman and scholar and we are the poorer for his passing.

Regards,
Lou

The SC archives are unclear on this matter. The Darlington Courthouse fire of 1806 caused the loss of many important records. The available records are hard to decipher, partly because of the duplication of names. The 1790 census has 2 William Berwicks(Barwicks) in Cheraw. Two and maybe three William Whiddons were in the county. Mary Davis may have married William Whiddon, but which one.

The North Carolina records are the ones we need to look at to unravel this mystery. William R. S. married about 1780 and didn't go to SC until about 1790.

The evidence in favor of Mary Eason is as follows:

Mary Eason was the daughter of William Eason Jr. and Sarah Manning. Mary's father died in 1763 and her mother married Thomas Richardson who, in 1779, owned land on the north side of Sapony Creek. This put Mary Eason in close proximity to William who also owned land on the north side of Sapony Creek. A Benjamin Davis did live Nash County, but he was on Fishing Creek in the north of the county. His land was not near William's land and he may not even be the one with a daughter named Mary.

Also, a long connection existed between the Eason and Whiddon families; William Eason, Sr., William Eason Jr., and William's father and brother Lott all served together in the NC militia in the 1750s.

The most telling evidence may be the 1912 article in the Tifton Gazette by Gus Adams in which he identified William's wife as Mary Eason. His information came from first person interviews with family members.

I, like the late Edward Whiddon, believe the most likely husband of Mary Davis is William, son of Lott.

Regards,
Lou Whiddon

Henry T Scott, son of jesse p scott married Julia Ann Wiggins. Their daughter, Nancy Anne Scott Quinney Scott was married to Bennett H Quinney (my husband's gg grandad). Nancy Ann ("Mammie") remarried after her husband died. She married her first cousin, John. Mammie's grandson (Harley Bennett Quinney JR) relayed the following information to me a few summers ago: HB recounted how his family would regularly visit "Mammie" (Nancy Ann Scott Quinney, paternal grandmother) and "Uncle John" (John T. Scott, 2m.) in the summer time. His father would hitch the mule to the wagon, and they would take the long, hot trip (only about 7 miles or so) to their home. "It seemed like an eternity," he recalled. "Mama and Daddy did not like Uncle John much. If they were going through town and saw him walking home, if he was getting supplies or something from town, they would turn their heads and ride on by like they never saw him. They never offered him a ride." (After tuberculosis claimed the life of Mammie's first husband, Bennett H Quiney, in 1909, she took company with John Henry Scott, who was her first cousin. They later married in 1927.)

John G. Walea died in December 1861 at Culpepper court House Virginia. He left no wife or children, according to records, but my ggrandmother's death certificate has him as her father.Jane (Jennie) Hanberry married Berry W. Stewart. Her parents never married. Rumors are she was part Indian, which would explain no marriage of her parents.I found his Civil War records on footnote.com.

Severn had a son, John, born abt 1833 who is listed on Jennie stewart's death certificate as her father. Jenny's mother is listed as Virginia Hanberry. I can't find a marriage record for John Walea and Virginia or Jane, Hanberry. A cousin told me Jennie's mother was Indian, so if that is true, then she could not marry John Walea.Georgia laws said whites could only marry whites. That would explain why Jennie (Jane) listed her name as Jane Hanberry when she married Berry Stewart.Jennie and Berry had a daughter, Talitha Lavinia Stewart. She married Henry E. Edenfield. They had a son, Albert Lloyd Edenfield. He married Mary Gardner, and Albert and Mary are my parents.I have a tree on ancestry.com, Albert Lloyd Edenfield. I would like to share info with you. I am searching for anything I can find on Walea, Stewart and Hanberry.

You are very welcome! I found the cemetary when that bad tornado came and blew the trees down. I wish I knew where some of my ancestors are buried. Its a good feeling to have some closer for people that care.
