The SC archives are unclear on this matter. The
Darlington Courthouse fire of 1806 caused the loss of many important records. The available records are hard to decipher, partly because of the duplication of names. The 1790 census has 2 William Berwicks(Barwicks) in Cheraw. Two and maybe three William Whiddons were in the county. Mary
Davis may have married William
Whiddon, but which one.
The
North Carolina records are the ones we need to look at to unravel this mystery. William R. S. married about 1780 and didn't go to SC until about 1790.
The evidence in favor of Mary
Eason is as follows:
Mary
Eason was the daughter of William
Eason Jr. and Sarah
Manning. Mary's father died in 1763 and her mother married Thomas
Richardson who, in 1779, owned land on the north side of Sapony
Creek. This put Mary
Eason in close proximity to William who also owned land on the north side of Sapony
Creek. A Benjamin
Davis did live
Nash County, but he was on Fishing
Creek in the north of the county. His land was not near William's land and he may not even be the one with a daughter named Mary.
Also, a long connection existed between the
Eason and
Whiddon families; William
Eason, Sr., William
Eason Jr., and William's father and brother
Lott all served together in the NC militia in the 1750s.
The most telling evidence may be the 1912 article in the Tifton Gazette by
Gus Adams in which he identified William's wife as Mary
Eason. His information came from first person interviews with family members.
I, like the late Edward
Whiddon, believe the most likely husband of Mary
Davis is William, son of
Lott.

Lou
Whiddon
