My GGGgrandfatherr William Alexander GOWEN/etc. was living in DeKalb County by the l840s in Halsey's District. His various census info states he was born abour l784 in Virginia. His wife's name is unknown. One of their sons--James D. S. Gowen--is my GGgrandfather. He served in the 41st (?) Alabama Infantry during the war.

The Gowens family as a whole had moved by the l860 census to Cherokee County AL. The POPE family intermarried into the Gowens, and moved along with them from North Carolina to perhaps South Carolina and then to DeKalb County.

Please let me know If anyone knows anything about these families, esp. their previous locations and dates. BTW, the Gowens/etc. name is found among the Cherokees, Lumbees and other mixed-race graoups such as Melungeons.

Thank you.
