Im looking for Powell,Gardner,Wright, or Duncans. From what i know my grandmother maternal family is from decatur county. My 3rd great grandfather(Austin) was giving the last night Wright from his slave owner Thaddeus Wright. Austin who had a brother(unknown) took his slave owners last name of Cook. From what i've tried to piece together is that Austin and Winnie Wright is the start of my grandmothers family. Im looking for info on winnie gardner(Sam) and Estella Gardner Hill(Tommy Duncans) and Mae Ida Hammonds(john).

I have always been told that my great-grandmother, their daughter, Ruby Raker, was born in 1904 in Tampa, Florida. However, in 1910, the family shows up on the census in Decatur County, Georgia. checking for family of Melissa(Malissa Monroe) whom married Tom Jones appx 1895. Originally she was from Wirt Co., WV her father was Robert Monroe and Mother was Drusilla McBride Monroe. Death Certificate was found by one of her gr.grandchildren in Georgia, Decatur Co. she lived in Camilla, Georgia. Indicates she was widowed had son initials listed as E.C. Jones. She was a sister to my gr.grandmother Martha Francis Monroe Jones (she married a George McDonald Jones).. only knew of her two children by her first marriage whom he passed away his name was Hickerson. Left two children by John S.Hickerson with her mother to raise and family just knew she married a Jones and never returned. There is a big family back in WV and would love to get names of other relatives, and children that she may of had with Tom Jones. Please contact me if you are familiar with this Melissa Monroe Jones whom died Nov 20, 1959 and was born Jan 6, 1868. Thanks and any help would be appreciated.

Did you ever find out more about Lillie Amanda Duke Sunday. I have her listed in my extended family tree. Lillie was the daughter of Robert Taylor Duke and Eliza Keziah Thompson. Robert Taylor Duke was the son of James Duke and Mary Pearman. James Pearman was the brother of Henry M. Duke, my direct ancestor, and Mary Pearman Duke, was the sister of Sarah Pearman, the wife of Henry M. Duke (two brothers married two sisters) Lillie Amanda Duke was the 2nd cousin of Maston Hendrick Duke, the father of Willis Jenkins Duke and Oscar Clark Duke mentioned in your post.

Craig, I've noticed you have lots of info on Allens from Southwest Georgia and I'm hoping you can help me out. My grandmother's mother was Alice Allen born 1902 in Grady county. Alice's mother was Debra. I have her father as Eddie Allen b. 1874 lived in Grady and Jefferson Co Fl. In the 1940 census Debra is widowed but is listed as Mrs. W Allen not Eddie. James Richard Dean was the son of James Dean born Jan. 3, 1825 who married Temperance Ann "Tempty" Brock dauther of John Brock Born July 1, 1800 and Nancy Murray.
Sarah M. Horn and James Richard had a son William Riley Born 4-14-1875 -married Lula Logue Born 10-18-1882 Sarh was Grandmother of Verlon Dean my Mother who was a child of that union. Verlon married Kenneth Edward Sr. and had 5 children I am one Diane now Kelley, Jeanie, Patricia, M. Carole & Kenneth E. Hello...my grgr grandmother was named Roxie Jane Brown, born approx 10/1832 and either Al or Ga....she married a James Franklin Scott in approx 1849...James was marriend to his first wife, Sarah Newman and she died giving birth....my grgr grandmother went by Jane.....have you ran accross this name/ James Franklin was living in Decatur County on the 1830 census, he was born about 1814...James & Jane where on the 1850 census in Jackson County, Fl....thanks for any help...my private is explore36868@yahoo.com

My 3nd great grandmother was a Mary Brown. We have always been told that her mother was the daughter of Reuben Chason. Her name was Elizabeth? The older Reuben (b: 1806) had a son by the same name. I have the marriage record of my 2nd great grandfather, James Alday and Mary Brown, married in 1870 in Decatur County, Ga. The 1850, 7th Census shows a James A. Brown family and Alfred Brown family. Below James A. Brown family is the Geoffrey Stancil family where Eliza Kason is listed. I believe this name is mispelled, and should be Elizabeth Chason. She is listed as 20 years old. Eddie Shoemaker Sr., 74, of Whigham, Ga., died Sunday in Tallahassee. The service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Union Springs Baptist Church in Grady County, Ga., with burial at the church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cox Funeral Home in Bainbridge, Ga. (912-246-4411). A native of Franklinton, La., and former resident of Tallahassee and of Bainbridge for 24 years, he had lived in Grady County for nine years. He was retired owner and operator of Shoemaker Lumber Company in Whigham. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4904 in Bainbridge. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Jean Whigham Shoemaker of Whigham; three sons, Eddie Shoemaker Jr. and John Marvin Shoemaker, both of Tallahassee, and Robert Edward ``Bob'' Shoemaker of Lantana; two stepbrothers, Jack McRory and William Frances (Billy) McRory, both of Tallahassee; two sisters, Ruby Lee Joiner of Bainbridge and Hilda Cantini of Tallahassee; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

BAINBRIDGE — Ruthell K. Shoemaker, 93, of Bainbridge, died Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Riverside Place in Bainbridge. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Whigham United Methodist Church in Whigham, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Whigham. The Rev. Allen Hartsfield and Tim Weldon officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. today at Ivey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shoemaker was born April 21, 1912 in Mitchell County, the daughter of Preston K. Kelley and Essie Clyde Dennard Kelley. She was a homemaker and a member of Whigham United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shoemaker was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Shoemaker and a daughter, Earlene Shoemaker.

Survivors include two sons, J.D. Shoemaker of Bainbridge and Robert L. Shoemaker of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Preston K. Kelley of Mulberry, FL; four grandchildren, Ed Shoemaker of Cumming, Tom Shoemaker of Delray Beach, FL, Mike Shoemaker of Davie, FL, and Debbie Mitchell of Summerville, SC; and 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbeare rs are Mrs. Shoemaker grandsons and great-grandsons.

Green Berry Moore,Sr., was a Justice of the Peace and business man , who came from Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia to Decatur County around 1827.
As recorded in the Land Deed Records of Decatur County, James Harrison, fourth child of Benjamin Harrison, bought Lot #374, District 19, 250 acres "more or less with the exception of one acre whereon Piedmont Church now stands", from Green Berry Moore, for $400.00. Recorded in Book F, page 569.

ORREN MOORE was killed in the Civil War. He enlisted and made 1st Corporal on November 11, 1861. Orren was wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 27, 1862. He was sent to General Hospital #2 in Lynchburg, Virginia where he died of his wounds on September 22, 1862. The record says: " He was packed up and sent to Bainbridge, Georgia."

Moore, Owen,1st. Corporal November 11, 1861. Wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. June 27, 1862. Died of wounds in General Hospital #2, at Lynchburg, Va. September 22, 1862. "Was packed up and sent to Bainbridge, Ga. Christian's."

Marched from Valley of Virginia near Winchester to Fredericksburg, Va., arriving there December 1, 1862. Engaged in battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. Left Fredericksburg for Culpeper Court House, Va., May 4, 1863, and arrived there June 5, 1863; from thence to Winchester, where they engaged in battle; thence to Wrightsville, Pa., and back to York, where they arrived August 10, 1863. Engaged in the battle of the Wilderness May 5, and 6, 1864, and the battle of Spotsylvania on the 8, 10, 12 and 19 of May 1864, leaving there May 22, 1864; thence to Hanover Junction and to Mechanicsville and engaged in battle June 2, 1864. Moved near Cold Harbor June 8, 1864; left there on the 13 and marched near Charlottesville, Va., and took the train for Lynchburg, arriving there on the 17, and on the 18 fortified and made ready for the enemy. On the 19 followed the retreating foe toward Salem, Va., arriving there June 21, 1864; from thence to Staunton and Martinsburg, arriving on July 2. The graveside funeral service for Laurine Sasser Jackson, 92, of Bainbridge, was held on Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at Pine Forest Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jackson was born July 26, 1919, in Grady County, Ga., the daughter of George Thomas Sasser and Sallie Lindsey Sasser. She died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at Memorial Manor Nursing Home. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Forest Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam H. Jackson.

Survivors include her stepdaughters, Beth Rish of Albany, Ga., and Alice Crews and her husband, Gene, of Albany, Ga.; her stepson, Jacky Jackson and his wife, Sharon, of Bainbridge; her nieces, Sally Hall, Joyce Smith, and Jean Poole, all of Columbus, Ga.; her daughter-in-law, Linda Fowler and her husband, Jimmy, of Bainbridge; her seven step-grandchildren and her 10 step-great-grandchildren.

I have a Frances A.E. Broom in my line. She was born approximately 1839 in Muscogee, Georgia to David Washington Broome and Martha Waller. You can find her in my public tree "Browne/Bamburg." The rest of the family moved to Decatur, Georgia sometime between 1850-1870, so I'm wondering if this is your Frances Broom Powell...? She is listed in the 1850 census with her father and stepmother.

In 1860 one of my Parker families from Henry Co., Al was found in Illinois. With no ryhme or reason to it. They were back by the 1870 Census, with the same children. I can only figure either they found work there or they left to wait out the tensions between the South and the North.

I looked for Martha Jane b1837 and the only one that came up was also in Illinois, however she had a daughter.

Where are the Decatur County RICH families in 1860

I have been researching my RICH family connections for over 10 years and have collected about as much information as I can. The RICH family in Decatur County is well known and has a long history going back to Thomas RICH and his wife Letty FANN.

I have traced them but have a big gap for the entire family in the 1860 census. Maybe they left Decatur county for a short period or something but for whatever reason I can't find them in 1860. It's as if we just disappeared during that census. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

The other family mystery that is most important to me is where is Martha Jane RICH B 20-Mar-1837 D 3-Feb-1918 in early 1862 when she became pregnant with my great grandfather Lee B. RICH whose father is UNKNOWN. Martha kept the name Rich and passed it on to her son but our actual paternal name remains unknown.

I am editing for publication the Civil War correspondence of Captain Virgil Parks of the "Decatur Guards". Parks settled in Bainbridge in early 1861, joined the local Presbyterian church, and practiced law with William O. Fleming. The "Decatur Guards" left for the war in August 1861 and Parks, while commanding his company, was killed in battle at Gettysburg, PA, July 2, 1863.

If you are aware of any stories or references to Virgil Parks, please keep my project in mind. Soldier letters, reminiscences, etc. by veterans of the "Decatur Guards" that might reference Captain Parks are especially sought.
