I am looking for information on James Aurthor Gay or related family. My gggrandfather James Aurthor Gay (1882-1985)was born near Atlanta Georgia, unsure of the County. He then moved to Gainsville, TX and later to Clay County, MO. He was named after his grandfather James Aurthur Gay. But I do not know anything further about the elder James Aurthur Gay. I suspect he was from Georgia because his father is listed from GA in the 1900 census and his mother from Florida

Can anyone tell me if this cemetery still exists? The book "All Known Cemeteries of Clayton County, Georgia" lists this cemetery as being "on the east side of Wallis Street (Railroad Street) 650' north of its intersection with Lovejoy Drive." It also states that it looks as if the graves "have been moved to other locations." If they have been moved, does anyone know where? Looking for the grave of Frances HALES. Thanks.

From Barbara Schulz, Oneco Fl.

I have exhausted most sources for proofs of Isaac Moore and Nancy Wyatt Moores children.
I had this obit from the Atlanta Constitution; but surely there would have been an obit in the hometown paper where he, his wife, son & family resided. Do any newspaper editions from 1883 survive? How about a funeral home that kept records back that far?
Some counties kept DC/death records prior to the state requirement; did Clayton keep any?
Thanks for the links; I did bookmark them.
Janet

Sherman did not burn Clayton Co CH as far as I know. Clayton Co. was formed in 1858 from Fayette Co. & Henry Co.
This 1855 map shows Jonesboro to be right on the Fayette/Henry county line.

http://georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu/histcountymaps/fayette185...

You may want to bookmark this link.
What newspaper did Jonesboro use in 1883? Does any researcher have access to Jonesboro obits from 1883? I really need the obit of William P. Melson who d. 10 July 1883 and was buried in Jonesboro City Cemetery on the 11th.
Are there any church records from the Jonesboro Methodist Church? I think it was formed in 1845. Any Melson info. included in church records will be appreciated.
Also, I would like to know where the home of William A. Melson and his son Davis P. Melson was in Jonesboro. Are there any old maps that would have this info - such as Sanborn Fire maps? Where are the Clayton County deed records located - at the courthouse or did Sherman burn them? THANKS!!!!!!!!!

To: Scholarly7 - do I already know you by another name?
I see your Thompson post is a few years old - so hope you see this note - I also have Cooks in Clayton, Henry, DeKalb, etc., and one of Charles' sons married into my Skelton family, but I don't think Charles is related.

What I really need is information about Mary Morris, daughter of MVB Morris. I think she may have married into my Smith family. Trying to prove or disprove this. Thanks for any help.
L. Cook-Edwards

i don't know it this will get to you guys or not, but looking for info on the Wootans that came from S.C. into Ga. Clayton.I can run my line back to A John Wootan. He is ?? the son of Jeremiah Wootan-m- a Elizabeth ??. Grandfather said this line started in S.C. and have found a Silas Wootan(en) that married a Brown. This Brown was the daughter of a merchant. When the merchant died Silas took over the store. Any info will be helpful. Email me at wootan900@hotmail.com--thanks Mel Wootan

hello-- Don't know if anyone has sent you info on Griffin/Wootan connections or not. This may be redundant-but.
William S. Wootan, dob 1835;-m- Sarah A. E. Griffin, dob 1830.
The 1860 Clayton Co. Ga. census list themas William, age 35 and Sarah, age 40. Their children are;Ann E., age13; Mary F.,age 11; Willis R.,age 9; William S., age8; John S., age 7/12. My G/grandfather is/was William S. Wootan. Hope this helps. Our Wootan line was always spelled with an "A". The census writers, county clerks, ect would spell it with an "E", so most of the legal papers are with an E. This has most of our line spelling with the "E". The 1860 census also list Ransom Griffin as father-in-law and he is Paralyzed. I don't know how. Have a goodun---mel

Dear Dave,

They are one in the same :). Now I wonder how we connect for only family members are & were buried there, to my knowledge. The connection to be buried there can be as simple as child marrying someone in one of the two families, then even the parents can be buried there as was the case with Drewry Pace & his family.

Sincerely,
Lena

Dear Dave,

I have never been out there myself, though I do plan on going sometime this year (when I discovered the cemetery I was helping Mom take care of Dad who had a severe 'case' of type two diabetes so I was not able to go too far; Dad passed-away in January at the young age of 57). I do believe it is a bit away from Decatur for it was named after my fourth great-grandfather Rep. & Rev. Samuel C. Masters Masters family & he lived in Ellenwood.

The cemetery survey was done by Franklin M. Garrett back on 26 September 1931 but I am going to post some surnames & perhaps one will sound familiar:
Barton; Berry; Blackmon (not BlackMAN); Bowden; Boyd; Brown; Burnes; Callaway; Cash; Chandler; Clark; Dodson; Ellis; Fuller; George; Gunnell; Henry; Hunt; Jones; Kelley; Kirkes; McKee; McMillian; Masters; Matthews; Mitchell; Morris; Owen; Owens; Pace; Phillips; Piper; Pope; Powell; Riley; Rusk; Simpson; Smith; Sprayberry; Toland; Turner; Turpin; Ward; White; Willaford & Young.

I hope you do not mind my asking but who were your great & second great-grandparents? I ask because if I can find a connection in my Masters file, or dig a little & find one, this could help confirm it's the right cemetery. I am also going to e-mail someone & ask him if this could be the same cemetery for I tend to believe it is.

Sincerely,
Lena

Dave,

I believe these are the same cemeteries, though it may not look like it:
MAS: Masters Family Cemetery

County:DeKalb

City:

State: GA

Location:
5057 Flakes Mill Road, about one mile south of Flake's Mill. On hill just south of Corn Creek. Land Lot 253, 12th District. Near Panthersville.

If you go to dekalbhistory.org you can get a phone number for them (the Dekalb Historical Society) & they should be able to confirm this or tell ya no (& if it's not may be they will be able to head you in the correct direction).

I can send you a listing of those buried there compiled many moons ago, may be there would be a name you recognize?
Sorry I did not answer sooner. I did not get an email about this reply, just stumbled on it. I don't know if Bumblehook was a plantation. My grandmother is 98, so I will ask her and her sister if they know. They used to live there. Which Mt. Zion Cemetery are you looking for? Is it in Jonesboro? I'll look around and see if I can find an internet list. Surely there is one somewhere.
Amy~

I live about 2 miles from Swint School and just lately have found that there is a cemetery there. I plan to go and see if I can locate this cemetery, but there has been LOTS of development in this area, but I will try. You mentioned Babb Cemetery. It is about 7 miles from where I live and I have a great grandfather, wife and at least 4 young children buried there. Why are you interested in Babb Cemetery, do you have ancestors buried there. e-mail me at maciebl@bellsouth.net and I will try to help you. Thanks Macie

Hello,
If you haven't gotten an answer to your question yet, Mary Jane Berry was buried in Masters Cemetery, supposedly in Ellenwood, Clayton County. As far as I know, the only Masters Cemetery is in DeKalb County on Flakes Mill Road. You can see some photos of it on FindaGrave.com (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=74...;).

I am not related to the Berrys, but I discovered Mary Jane's burial location from her death certificate, which is online at Georgia's Virtual Vault (http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/gadeaths.php). Just type in Mary and Berry for the names, and she is one of the results. I would imagine that her husband is buried with her.

Sue Ellen Fealko

1883 obit for William P. Melson

Mr. William P. Melson died 10 July 1883 in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia "at the residence of his son W(illiam) A. Melson." His obituary appeared in The Constitution (Atlanta) newspaper edition of 12 July 1883:

"Jonesboro, Georgia
DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN
Special to The Constitution
JONESBORO, JULY 11 - Mr. William Melson of this place, who has been quite feeble for some time, died last night at eleven o'clock at the residence of his son W. A. Melson. The deceased was near eighty eight years of age. Will be interred at the Jonesboro cemetery at five o'clock this evening."

He was buried on 11 July 1883 at Jonesboro City Cemetery (I have visited his grave). The Melsons were prominent members of Jonesboro and I feel sure that he would have had an obituary in the Jonesboro newspaper. Can anyone help me with finding a local obit for him? I am desperate to find info. that would be typical for a local paper and surely this 88 yr-old well-known man would've had an obit. HELP!!
Families need to count their blessings that GA Power didn't do away with the graves without notifying anyone. I'm part of a group that is trying to restore what's left of a cemetery. The original cemetery was approximately 23 acres. What's left is less than 2 acres. With only 1 tombstone. We have pictures of graves that were there in the 1970's taken by a group members.

Now that is interesting, I had no idea that you had to be a connection to be buried there. Of course I need to confirm that my relatives are actually buried there (it definitely sounds like the right cemetery). If you're interested I can send you a .ged or Word document of my Freeman side (it's about 43 pages). I did notice that you had a "Young" included in your surname listing. My mother married a "Young" (thus my name). Her father and mother are my grandparents buried there. If you're interested in seeing this info, please send me an e-mail to daveyoung(at)frontiernet(dot)net.

Dave Young

Hi Lena,

I'm not sure about the information you supplied. I know that the cemetery is close to Fairview Memorial Gardens (where my mom and dad are buried) which is on Fairview Road in Stockbridge. I don't know if this helps or not. But if you can give me directions/address/coordinates to the cemetery you're talking about I'll see if I can find and verify it.

Thank you very much!

Dave

Hi Lena,

I hope this is the right cemetery. I never would have thought it was in DeKalb County. The cemetery is supposed to be close to where my parents are buried and they are in Henry County, close to Clayton County. It sounds like this cemetery might be close to the DeKalb and Clayton County line, so it's a possibility. I lived in that area when I joined the military in the 1970's (On Anvilblock Road off of Bouldercrest Road). The historical society is in the old courthouse in the City of Decatur (I graduated from Decatur High School in 1973).

There are four graves there I want to visit, my grandparents (Lon and Mary Jane Freeman), and my uncle/aunt (Harry and Dorothy Freeman). My grandfather died in 1979, my grandmother in 1983; my uncle died in about 2006 and I don't know when my aunt died. If you have any of those names it would confirm that it's the right cemetery.

Thank you so much for helping with this!

Dave

Hi Lena,

I posted a similar query on the Ancestry Cemetery forum. Someone sent me directions on how to get to the cemetery (see below). Using his directions and Google Earth I got an satellite view of the cemetery (isn't technology great?!), also see below.

Thank you again for all your help!

Dave

I will start you on Interstate 20, East of Atlanta. Exit at Wesley Chapel Road (first exit east of I-285) Proceed south on Wesley Chapel. After a couple of miles you will cross Flat Shoals Parkway and Wesley Chapel will change to Flakes Mill Road. Continue south on Flakes Mill a couple more miles and the cemetery will be on your right. Can't miss it is large and well maintained, has large fence will brick columns. Gates will likely be closed, but I think they are unlocked in the daytime.

This is in DEKALB county, but just barely north of the HENRY county line. The Fairview community is a part of Ellenwood and is centered about a mile south of the cemetary where Flakes Mill, Panola and Fairview roads intersect.
Dear Lena,

I'm so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I also lost my dad at the age of 57 in 1984, my mom was only 47 in 1978 (both of cancer). I was in my twenties at the time. I'm 52 now and still fill like an orphan.

Though I was born and raised in Georgia, most of my ancestors are from North Georgia (Blairsville) and North Carolina (Bryson City area). With that, I'd be surprised if you and I are related. But you never know. My grandparents on my mother's side was Harvey Jasper and Catherine (Morgan) Freeman; and on my father's side is Joseph Ezekiel and Birdie Maybelle (Ingram) Young. I lived in Ellenwood when I joined the Coast Guard in 1974. I stayed in the Coast Guard for a bit over thirty years and retired in Northern New York (my wife is/was Canadian so we stayed close to Canada). I lived in Marietta, Decatur and Ellenwood growing up. I've relatives all over Georgia now, mostly in Blairsville, Dallas, Newnan, Stockbridge, and so on. But none (that I know of) are native to the metro-Atlanta area.

Thank you again!

Dave Young
