My name is Jan Page. I have a web site called Gone and Almost Forgotten Georgia. I received an e mail today from someone wanting information about a convenience store robbery that resulted in the deaths of three men. It happened in the early 1970's and is unsolved to this day. The store was probably located on HWY 1/state road 27/Martha Berry Highway, In or around Bluffton. Any info would be appreciated.

Generations of my father's family are buried at Shiloh Baptist Church (est 1840) at Cotton Hill, Clay County, GA. There are two cemeteries at this church, one white and the other black. My mother was a member of the Fort Gaines Methodist Church (est 1822). Many of the other churches in the area were established before the civil war. Brief histories of these early churches are available on the Clay Co genealogy site. In 1851 Clay County was created from Randolph and Early Counties which also have many churches established in the early 1800s. There is a partial membership list of the Cuthbert Baptist Church (est 1831) on the Randolph site. The history of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church (est 1822) records "... One slave member, Joe Callaway, after being "Freed" became a very noted preacher among his race." New Bethel Baptist (est 1839) records ". . . On June, 1852 the records show that a colored sister, the property of William Norwood, presented herself for membership by letter and was received . . . "

Some information on these churches is available online via the GAGenWeb.
http://www.thegagenweb.com/gaclay/
and
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/randolph/
Perhaps these links may be of assistance in your research.

I was wondering about the spellings of the names you put in your message. Here are the family members with various spellings from 1930 back to 1870 in the United States Federal Census. This should get you started. There is more to be done. You have to run each name you see below between the 1870 to 1930 census to get a complete story. D

Sylla, Silla, Fillis is probably Phillis in the later years of the censuses. Phyllis was married to a Sam in the 1880 census. Do you know her maiden name? Note that in the 1910 & 1930 census, Sam and Phyllis say they were born in Georgia, not Alabama. It is only in the 1880 & 1900 & 1920 census, that they are marked born in Alabama. This is strange.

1870 United States Federal Census about Samuel Powell
Name: Samuel Powell
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Age in 1870: 17
Birthplace: Alabama
Home in 1870: Township 9 Range 29, Barbour, Alabama
Race: Black
Gender: Male
Post Office: Eufaula
Household Members: Name Age
Cuffie Powell 51
Ellen Powell 50
Samuel Powell 17
Susan Powell 16
Charles Powell 14
Wade Powell 13
Mary Powell 11

1880 United States Federal Census about Sam Powell
Name: Sam Powell
Home in 1880: Eufaula, Barbour, Alabama
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850
Birthplace: Alabama
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's Name: Fillis
Father's birthplace: Virginia
Mother's birthplace: California
Occupation: Laborer
Marital Status: Married
Race: Black
Gender: Male
Household Members: Name Age
Sam Powell 30
Fillis Powell 19
Persila Powell 2M
Persila Armon 60

1900 United States Federal Census about Sam Powell
Name: Sam Powell
Home in 1900: Centerville, Henry, Alabama
Age: 50
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850
Birthplace: Alabama
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's Name: Fillis
Race: Black
Household Members: Name Age
Sam Powell 50
Fillis Powell 38
Melie Powell 13
Osa Powell 14
Norman Powell 12
Joe Powell 10
Samuel Powell 8
Kirly Powell 5
Abram Powell 1
Francis Scott 2.12

1910 United States Federal Census about Sillie Powell
Name: Sillie Powell
Age in 1910: 58
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Birthplace: Georgia
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Father's Birth Place: Georgia
Mother's Birth Place: Georgia
Spouse's Name: Sam
Home in 1910: Bluffton, Clay, Georgia
Marital Status: Married
Race: Black
Gender: Female
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Sam Powell 60
Sillie Powell 58
Ozia Powell 25
Norman Powell 21
Joseph Powell 16
Samuel Powell 15
Curby Powell 13
Abram Powell 12
Francis Powell 11
Giblow Powell 7

1920 United States Federal Census about Phillis Powell
Name: Phillis Powell
Home in 1920: Bluffton, Clay, Georgia
Age: 60 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Birthplace: Alabama
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Alabama
Mother's Birth Place: Alabama
Marital Status: Widow
Race: Black
Sex: Female
Home owned: Rent
Able to read: No
Able to Write: No
Image: 508
Household Members: Name Age
Phillis Powell 60
Joe Powell 27
Samual Powell 22
Abram Powell 19
Norman Powell 30
Gelow Powell 15

1930 United States Federal Census about Phyllis Powell
Name: Phyllis Powell
Home in 1930: Militia District 969, Clay, Georgia
Age: 65
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Birthplace: Georgia
Relation to Head of House: Head
Race: Negro (Black)
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Phyllis Powell 65
Norman Powell 38
Francis Powell 25
J Z Powell 8

I agree that it will be be very difficult to prove that William Clem and William Hanks are the same person. It's hard to come up with any reason for a man to change his legal surname to his mother's maiden name. There are any number of scenarios if the Clems were half brothers of William T instead of full-blooded brothers.

There is a conflict between the Mortality Schedule for William H Clem's death which gives his location of birth as Georgia and the 1880 and 1900 Censuses for William T Hanks that show his father's birth place to be Alabama. Do you have any of the Clem brothers on the 1880 or later censuses and if so what location is shown for their father's birth place?

I'm looking for information regarding a Sam Nolon aka S.N. Nolan from Early County or Clay County, Georgia that passed away probably in September 1920 or in 1921. He was married to a Cora Thurmon or Thurman. She is buried in Mitchell County Cemetary. This is a caucasion family. Sam and Cora had quite a few children together. One of which was my grandmother Sammie May Nolan whom was adopted in 1924 by Will and Josephine Henderson of Houston County, Alabama. The adoption papers state her name being Sammie May but she always spelled it Sammie Mae (She married Willie Hobbs son of E.D. Hobbs)... Cora tried to raise the children for a couple years after the death of her husband, but after failed attempts and struggles--she placed all the children for adoption (how sad!). Anyone having information on this family --- please contact me! Thanks and God Bless. Leaht95@msn.com
I have nothing on the Nolon/Noland/Nolan family so anything you have and willing to share would be wonderful! All I have is that Sam Nolan also spelled his name S.N. Nolon and he died very young sometime between 1920 and 1921. He married a Cora Thurmon or Thurman and she was unable to support the children on her own so they were all adopted out in the year of 1924. Sammie May (my grandmother) was adopted by Will and Josephine Henderson and the name on the adoption certificate states Sammie Mae Henderson previously Nolon. Cora Thurman/Noland is buried in Mitchell County Georgia cemetary next to her daughter (my grandmother's sister) Beulah Howell. WAiting to hear back from you.

Leah

I'm desperately trying to find information on my grandfather's side of the family. My GF was Willie Hobbs aka W H Hobbs although he had no middle name the family, as it was common to do back then...used the last name as the middle initial. His father was Ed Hobbs or E Hobs aka Edward Hobbs. Ed was originally from Georgia as were his parents and he was killed by a train October 21, 1911 here in Houston county; Dothan, AL. His funeral was conducted at Selma Baptist but they have no records of anything. Ed was married to a May-Lula (we were always told her name was Mary) on the 1910 census and had stepchildren of "Tenley" although their names were Andrew aka Ander and Noah Finely / Fenley. Ed apparently had a son named James (grown child and perhaps he is the son listed on the 1910 census. Nontheless....I've been going in circles for YEARS and finding no one with any information.

Any one out there with the answers would be appreciated!

Re: William H. Clem m. Louisa R. Hanks 1/1/1843, Georgia

Judy, I think you found the family because the children's names and birthdates are correct. Louisa Hanks Clem's middle name was Rebecca but we know how mistakes were made in the old record keeping. Taylor was not in the census and that disappoints me. One of her son's was William Taylor Clem b. 1848. My g-grandfather was William Taylor Hanks. My grandfather told the story that when he was a small child two men rode up on horse back about dusk dark and stayed until morning and left and he never saw these men again. He said they were his father's full blood brothers and their last name was Clem. His father told them he was going to tell them something one day and of course died and the answer to the mystery died with him. W.T. Hanks was born in Georgia in 1848 and was a Civil War Vet. "No proof of this under the Hanks name." He married Helen Rushing in 1872 in Smith County, Texas. I have found W.T. Clem in the Civil War and in the 1860 Clay,Co. Ga.,Census and then he disappears until the marriage in 1872. Proving the two men are one in the same seems impossible. I do appreciate your info on the family because I had not been able to find them either. If you find anymore info; please let me know. Thanks again, this means a great deal to me because I have been search for this family for 6 years. Glenda

Judy, please forgive me for not replying to our discussion on the Clem's. I was call away because of a family illness at 7am on 3/3/08. I was 160 miles away without internet access and have returned this afternoon. I hope you are still around because I would like to discuss my problem further. I will get my notes out in the next two days and tell you what I have. I appreciate your interest and hope to talk to you again. Glenda

Glad to hear from you after all this time. Mariah and Rosanna were sisters to William Thomas Cook, son of Hiram cook. I'm sure you have seen the census of 1860 of Barbour County, Ala. that list the children of Hiram and Sarah Ann. I have not been able to find the father of Hiram Cook or Sarah Ann's name before she married Hiram. William thomas Cook moved to Marshall, Tx and his descendents still live in the area. George W. Cook, another brother also lived in the area. I do not know where Peter lived. Let me know if you know anything about the Cooks

I am hoping someone can tell me what building is currently at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and Carroll Street in Fort Gaines. I found on an old Sanborn Map that was the location of the Central Hotel that W. C. Brooks was a part of. Thank you!

William C. Brooks (born ~1843) & Central Hotel of Fort Gaines, GA.

I am looking for any information anyone might have regarding William Christopher Brooks who was born in Georgia around 1843. His wife was Anola (or Ola) and his daughter Ceola (or Cola). They are listed in the 1880 census for Fort Gaines, and I need help determining if they died in Fort Gaines. I can find nothing on them since 1880. Also, there was an 1875 article in the Cuthbert paper discussing William C. Brooks and he was working with Mr. Peterson of the Central Hotel. Does anyone have a photo of this Hotel? Thank you for any help, I am at a definite dead-end.
