I am researching African american Powells who migrated to Georgia from Alabama in the late 1800's. Any descendants of sylla, Osa, Nellie, Gelow, Norman, Joe, Sam, Kirly, Abram and Francis. All are children of Sam Powell and Fillis Armon. Any info?

No, I dont show any Frank Powells as of yet. My Powells are originally from Alabama and moved to Georgia in the late 1800's early 1900's. They did live in Clay county though. Bluffton, I believe.

I was wondering about the spellings of the names you put in your message. Here are the family members with various spellings from 1930 back to 1870 in the United States Federal Census. This should get you started. There is more to be done. You have to run each name you see below between the 1870 to 1930 census to get a complete story. D

Sylla, Silla, Fillis is probably Phillis in the later years of the censuses. Phyllis was married to a Sam in the 1880 census. Do you know her maiden name? Note that in the 1910 & 1930 census, Sam and Phyllis say they were born in Georgia, not Alabama. It is only in the 1880 & 1900 & 1920 census, that they are marked born in Alabama. This is strange.
