Barber's Creek area

I have seen Barber’s Creek listed in some of my research and I was wondering if someone could explain where this area actually is. I know that a Civil War battle happened in this area as well. I am trying to figure out 2 main things –

1) Is this area close to the Mars Hill Road and William Daniell house area?

2) Does anyone know why it is called Barber’s Creek? Did a Barber family live there at some point?

I’m trying to figure out if possibly a Barber family lived near the Daniell’s because I have a William Barber marrying William Daniell’s daughter, Rachel in Clarke County in January 1810 who are my 3GGparents. I have found Daniell information at times, but I have not been able to find William Barber’s family although it seems that they lived somewhere in the area.

I am looking for any information on Jas H. Suddeth Born abt 1849 married Sallie Suddeth. Their daughter Eula Suddeth Johnson married Fred Johnson. Another possible daughter Grace Suddeth. Also a son, Charles Harold (or Harrell) Suddeth. Born July 18, 1884. Died 1919. Lived in Athens, Hull and Winterville, Ga. Married Mattie Mae (or May) Lester. Had three sons. Charles Sherman Suddeth 1909-1983?, James R. Suddeth still born July 17, 1913 and Frank Kellett (or Kellet) Suddeth born Feb. 27, 1916 died Dec. 6, 2003 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. All of them, with the exception of Frank and buried in the Winterville Cemetary. Frank is my grandfather. His dad died 3yr after he was born and we have no other info in this family. Please let me know of any leads.

John H. appears to be accurate for what I'm looking for. I had found the same name in the 1900 US census and wasn't sure though. Also, the Paul Augustus matches since both of my Paul Burnett's had the middle name of Augustus although the WW1 registration birth date is off. But, perhaps he gave his incorrect age. Martha, after going over some of my old notes, I have to question my earlier statement (which I now realize was an assumption) about Polly being Barclay's daughter. It just isn't so certain now that I try to find where I got the idea.

Barclay, whose family I remain interested in (and from which I am descended) might have been a bondsman for any number of folks, buthis daughter Polly is said to have married a Lowry, and upon further investigation, I think her approximate age would have to have been a little too young for an 1802 marriage. I'm sorry for giving you misleading information.

My reason for requesting a Roane Co. marriage lookup was to find the marriage of Pollie McGae & Levi Lemmon who are found in the Roane Co. 1830 census. The kind lookup person didn't find such record but did find that one Bartly McGee signed as bondsman for 'an' 1802 marriage but didn't say whose marriage. Thanks for that information. I believe Bartly (Barclay) McGhee was Polly's father. I don't have any dates for her, but 1802 for her marriage would be about right. Does it say to whom she was married? I'd love to have that information.

Hi Rusty -

I assume that is the same line. Elijah Uriah I think (but I'm going from memory, and I'm not related to them, so I'm not certain on this) was grandson of Uriah whose will is in Clarke County records office. I have a scan of it which I can send you. Anyway, they were in Clarke and Jackson counties and were in NC beforehand, and in VA before that. Uriah talks about it in his will.
My McDonalds were in Jackson County and were interconnected with the Humphreys/Humphries a bit. There was a George Humphreys who married Abigail McDonald who is probably related to my McDonalds, but we're still sorting them all out. We have 2 McDonald families about 1799-1820; they are probably related but we don't know exactly how. We think cousins because of the multitude of James McDs. No male descendants of the other family of McDs have been located at this time who would be willing to do DNA testing.

My McDonalds trace back to VA and I obtained a very close genetic match to a different McDonald family from the same area of VA, so I'm fairly certain that they're the right McDonalds in VA who end up in Jackson County. For the Humphreys, there is the will, and the names match the VA names very well.

I believe there is even a court record that talks about one of the Humphreys men going to NC during the 1790s, but again that is based on memory. There were several records in VA indicating that a number of families moved to NC; it appears that a number of them also came to Jackson County within about 10 years.

I knew some McDonald's up in Lumpkin County several years ago. They lived on Long Branch Rd.

Anyway, and this is all from memory, there was a Susannah Humphrey/Humphries that married William Fields. That William Fields was given the job of "laying out the town", I forget what County, in N.C., about 1801. There were several marriages of Fields and Humphries in "Boone", N.C. area. I traced the Humphrey/Fields to North Georgia. They had a son, Thomas J Fields, that I thought was my gggrandfather, born in 1841. Unfortunately, he was the wrong Thomas J Fields. There were actually three T J Fields born in 1841 in GA.

I was inquiring about the Humphrey/Humphries that married Elizabeth Alexander, my line?

The Humphries family (Uriah, George, Shadrack and others) in this area were from Virginia up to the 1790s, then to NC, and then to Jackson and Clarke Counties. If you've seen Uriah's will, he talks about having had a wife and some children in VA, but didn't feel he owed them anything, and left everything to the family in GA, although it looked like some of the sons were given some things.

My McDonalds were from the same area of VA and I'm trying to track them down in NC but not having much success yet. I'm not sure where in NC the Humphries were living.

I seem to have messed up my earlier replies. I strongly believe this Ann is tied to the Clarke Co. Ganns, possibly to John Gann Sr. I have, however, been uable to definitavely prove this. Ann was one of 4 illigitimate children of Elizabeth Gann, b. 1790. I'd be happy to share what I've found so far with anyone who may be interested.

Oconee Hill Cemetery Photo -ESCOE

Hi.. I have some Escoe ancestors buried in the Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens and was wondering if any one local would be willing to take photos of their graves and markers and send them to me.

They are located in section NB95. There are about 7-10 Escoes in that section.

I was given information that the Elizabeth Gann who married John Alexander was born abt. 1770. I've also heard the rumors that her mother was a Native American.

For at least a 30 yr period there are families of Epps living around the Ganns in Clarke Co. GA. Have not found a marriage between Ganns and Epps but may need to look further as there are several females whose husband's names are not known. From what Wesley Gann states there was a marriage between a Samuel Gann and Epps in 1832. Don't know who this Samuel is as of now.

Nathan Gann's son Nathan Gann, Jr. and my Nathan Gann have been confused in the past as being one and the same.

My Nathan Gann was the grandson of Adam Carter Gann, through his son Ignatious Nathan Gann.

I may have information relating to the Gann's of Clarke Co. GA. that relate to your query. I am a descendant of Elizabeth Gann b. Abt. 1785, that married John Alexander in Oglethorpe Co. Ga. They moved to Clarke Co. GA. sonn after the marriage. Elizabeth Gann's father was Nathan Gann, and her mother is reported to be a Native American woman. Other surnames in my line are Alexander, Stephens, Epps, Humphries, and Weir, to name a few. I hope to hear from you soon.

Concerning John, nephew of Nathan Langston, do you have information from Nathan's will, and that of Christian Fairbarn's will that mentions Lettice Bearden (possibly daughter of John Bearden (I) and Lettice Winn)?

I am decended from John Bearden (III), died 1844 in Spartanburg, Co. SC. Trying to find if he is really the son of John (II)(Revolutionary, Died in TN 1936) or not.

As far as John Jr (III) (died 1844), he was married to a MOORE, and then a LEE.

The wills may shed light on Eli Bearden and Nancy Langston. It may not.

Any information on Blackmon family in Clarke (or surrounding) Counties

I am looking for any information on a Blackmon family in Clarke County between 1840 - 1880. My great grandmother was Fannie Blackmon and her death certificate indicates that she was born 22 Oct 1873 in Athens, Georgia. Her father is listed as David (D. - probably Daniel) Blackmon. The 1860 census for Jackson County shows a Blackmon family (Father - John; Mother - Frankey; Daughter - Susan; and Son - David). I'm not sure if this is the same David but the age would be close. The 1843 Tax Records for Clarke County also show both a David (R?) Blackmon as well as a Sanford Blackmon listed in Whitesville. Both David D. Blackmon (father) and Fannie Blackmon (daughter) later moved to Atlanta where both died. David D. Blackmon was married twice and perhaps his first wife (unknown) died during or shortly after childbirth. I believe that my Great Grandmother was her only child. David later re-married Lettie Mary Stone (probably in Atlanta) about 1877 (four years after the birth of my GGm) and they had five additional children. I have also located a John Blackmon (possible father of David D.) who married Tempy Caroline Porterfield in Clarke County 21 August 1861 (again, I have no idea if there is a connection). If this was the same John Blackmon, it would have been his second marriage. I seem to have reached the proverbial brick wall, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know which county it was in but probably Clarke co or Jasper co Ga. According to records passed on to me, John W. Bearden III was indeed the son of John Bearden II, the revolutionary soldier, born 1744, who died in Bedford Co., TN , 1836.
My records show John III was born Mar 18, 1784, died 1846, was married to Mary "Polly" Lee and Rhoda Moore.

John II came to Tn, from VA, late in life to live with his son Eli, who was first of Beardens to come to TN
I know nothing of the wills mentioned, but other info is correct.

Frank (Francis) Thornton, North Georgia, mid-late 1800's

I'm desperately seeking information on an individual named Frank (perhaps Francis?) Thornton. I know very little about him or his family, so I'd like some help from you genealogical detectives out there. Here's what I know about Frank:

He married Anna (Annie) Irvin in Georgia.
They had at least one child: Alice Thornton, born around 1892 in Georgia.

Outside of that, I'm assuming that Frank and Annie got married in one of the counties where Annie's family lived: Pike, Hall, or Jackson (in chronological order). Annie was born in 1868 in Pike County. She had remarried by 1898.

That's all I know. I would appreciate any help you could provide, especially family members. Surely, someone knows about the Thorntons in this area, and could offer up info.

To change the topic ever so slightly: My grandfather, Charles Holmes Stone, writes that his great grandfather, John William Stone (1787-1843) and wife Mary (Polly Pulliam) Stone (1792-1863) are buried in "the Old Cemetery, Athens, GA." Can someone please look these two people up in the book and tell me what the cemetery is called today? The rest of the Stones are in Oconee Hill Cemetery and I have to wonder if Joh William and Mary are also buried there in a different plot from their son, Ellison D. Stone.

They died in 1843 and 1863, respectively. Can someone look that up and see what the name of the cemetery really is, please? I was excited to see the names you posted regarding "old photos"! I circled at least 15 names that I am related to. Clifford Fields was my grandfathers oldest brother. Samuel Pierce Kenney married Nancy Jackson, my gggrandmothers sister. Mary Agnes Jackson is my gggrandmother, daughter of John S Jackson and Martha Kenney. I have an unpublished manuscript in two hat boxes, with photos, several letters back to 1894, and more, that was given to me by "Bennie Logan's" wife, Hilda Belle Alexander Logan. Hilda was my other gggrandmother's niece.

I would like to share information with anyone researching the Kenney/Kinney, Alexander, Wier/Weir,Wilson, Jackson, and Johnson surnames.
I also have an interest in the "Ransom Nichols" that was mentioned in an earlier post(Nichols/Kinney). I am familiar with a Ransom Nichols that married "Quincy Adeline Moss", when she was very young. Ransom abandoned Adeline soon after the marriage, and went to the gold fields in California. I'm not sure how long he stayed before he came back. I think he was in Lumpkin County also.
I am a direct descendant of the Wier's and Alexanders in Wilkes, Oglethorpe, and Jackson Counties. I also have quite alot on the James Kennedy Johnson line that came from Knox County Tennessee, and traded property with a UGA professor after the Civil War, because he was shunned for refusing to fight. I have personal letters written in 1894, 1917, 1924, etc., and family bibles that belonged to Maggie Wilson and Alice Alexander Merk. Alice operated the Martin Institute in Jefferson, Jackson, Georgia.
I also have an unpublished manuscript given to me by Hilda Belle Alexander Logan with other significant original documents of genealogical value.
The letters mentioned are of a personal family nature between family members, i.e. Aunt's, Uncles, Sisters, etc. I thought about posting some but decide to share them with those with direct ancestry.
I hope someone responds.

I am interested in Elijah Uriah Humphries, b. 18 Dec 1804, Clarke County, d. 27 Jul 1881, Fulton County. Elijah Uriah Humphries married Elizabeth F Alexander on 12 Mar 1823, in Clarke County, Georgia. I am related through the Alexander's, and I have information to share on the Alexander's. I would like more information on the Humphries.

Several years ago, I was following a false lead on my Fields ancestors, and I found out quite a lot on the Humphries and Fields, that were from N.C.. It seems that they were connected to the famous Daniel Boone, that moved to Kentucky. Unfortunately, the William Fields that married the Humphries, and moved to Georgia, was not my line.

I will be glad to help if I can.

Boggs Chapel changed to Gateway United Methodist changed again

Boggs Chapel (Jefferson River Road on north side of Rt. 129) changed it's name to Gateway United Methodist Church. A recent visit determined that "Gateway" is now "Mision Latina Iglesia Unida", Rev. Nohemi V. Rameirez.

Gateway United Methodist Church is now located on a service road/corner west of Jefferson, on the southside of Rt. 129.
The rootsweb cemetery page for Clarke Co. point of contact resulted in an error....couldn't be found, wrong, etc. etc.

Samuel, born Aug. 28, 1770 was the son of Samuel W. Lachland, Sr. who was born May 28, 1744, in Newton-Upon-Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. Samuel (1770) was probably born in GA. Samuel (1770) had a brother, William. I was never sure of Martha being a sibling of Samuel. I had seen something at one time about Martha being a daughter of William and Nancy Stinson Locklin. There is a record in Rowan Co., NC of a William Locklin marrying an Agnes Stevenson, 1769. I have often wondered if this is one and the same? Was Nancy actually Nancy Agnes Stevenson "Stinson"?
Samuel (1744) had a brother, William, born in 1754 in Scotland. If this is the same William that married Nancy and/or Agnes, then he would have only been 15 yrs old at the time of his marriage. Further, it is said (no records) that Samuel Lachland came to the U.S. before 1770 or possibly between 1770-1772. This throws another kink into the mix as to where Samuel (1770) was actually born. Samuel (1744) was born to William Lachland and Jane Cook.

I also have Samuel G. Locklin[1770] m Celia Zachery w/ Son Samuel G.[1808] m. Rebecca Stephens w/ a son Daniel William Locklin[1835] who married Martha G. Griffeth ( I show her as Martha J. Griffeth, daughter of John Locklin Griffith and Asenath Eberhardt.) John Locklin Griffith being a son of John L. Griffith and Martha/Matilda Locklin.
Are we both sufficiently confused yet?

I wish that I could help you out. Instead, I have a couple of questions
regarding the Griffith/eth line.
I have no proof, but I have a William C Griffith, born about 1796, as the son
of John Griffith and Martha/Matilda Locklin. I do not have any descendants at
this time shown for William C Griffith. I show John born about 1770 in
Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC and died about 1798, Madison Co., GA. He is said to
have been buried in Paoli Church Cemetery, Danielsville, Madison Co., GA. Is
this the same line you are working? I'd be most interested in further
information you might have.

My Locklin line was in Walton Co. My 4g grandfather, Samuel W. Locklin, is
buried in the Locklin cemetery at High Shoals, Walton Co. I have been trying
for quite some time to prove the connection between Martha/Matilda Locklin and
Samuel W Locklin as siblings, but to date have no proof. Martha being born
about 1772 and Samuel about 1770. I have quite a lot of information on the
Locklin line and would love to work up the Griffith line if these two do indeed
connect.

Speck - I know this is an old post, but if you still check this board - do you have any info on what area of NC/SC Uriah Humphries lived in before coming to Jackson County?

My McDonald ancestors seem to be connected to the Humphries in migratory patterns (as do several other families), so that would be very helpful if you know where the Humphries were before Jackson County. I find us connected in VA before the Carolinas, and in Jackson County.

The Clarke county cemetery listings are incomplete, so if you don't find what you're looking for here, you might contact Evergreen Memorial Park and Oconee Hill Cemetery directly. Oconee Hill is very large and only a fraction of those interred are recorded on the Internet from what I can tell.

I have Samuel G. Locklin[1770] m Celia Zachery w/ Son Samuel G.[1808] m. Rebecca Stephens w/ a son Daniel William Locklin[1835] who married Martha G. Griffeth.

There are several other Locklin / Griffith connections that I have in my data base. All appear to be the same family but I don't have the siblings of Martha Locklin. The only other thing is that both Samuel [1770] and Martha [1772] both have fathers name William. So it's possible it is the same father I just don't have the connection at this time.

No, I don't have that info. I know that I gave up on the William to Rev George connection a while back. It seemed to me that the date range is too great - maybe a generation is missing - for George to be the son of William. When I originally started researching I found an entry in an old magazine that stated Clement was the son of George but that he had been raised by an older brother after the death of their mother. I have never found anything to support this statement. I do know that Leonard Clifton's son, Alexander Hamilton, was living in Randolph Co, AL with John T. in 1870. I believe that Leonard and Clement are brothers and were living together as early as 1830 Troup Co, GA

I descend from Clement F.(Floyd?) Clifton who is said to be a son of George Clifton and Emily Dickenson/Dickerson. However I have never established a link between the Cherokee Co, AL Clifton's who do descend from George and the Randolph Co, AL Cliftons. I have some documentation that links Thomas, William, Leonard and Clement Clifton as possible brothers based on Cowetta and Troup Co, GA census records. At this time I do not believe that Clement Clifton is the son of George Clifton. He does not name any of his sons George - his oldest son is named John Thomas Clifton. It seems likely that John T. was named after his maternal grandfather John Jackson and possibly, but not proven, his paternal grandfather Thomas Clifton.

Unfortunately I don't have any info to share but I'm hoping to get some more info on an Akin ancestor of mine that has me totally stumped. Luanza Akin was born 25 June 1826 according to the family bible. In Georgia, according to an 1860 census record. In 1851 she married William Thomas McDonald "at James Akin's" according to an entry in the family bible. I originally thought that James might have been her brother or her father. But then I saw where there was a Deacon James A. Akin in Mississippi who migrated to Texas, so this James Akin may have been the minister rather than a relative. I guess he could have been both.

Any help at all about where Luanza connects to the Akin family in Georgia would be greatly appreciated.

Born abt 1840 in NC. Father from Tennessee, Mother from NC.
Appeared in the 1870 census in Cartersville, Barrow Co., Ga. as Manasas B. age 30. Married to Sarah A. Maddox Aug. 22, 1861 in Fulton Co., Ga.. Sarah died in Cartersville, Barrow Co., Ga. July, 1872 leaving 2 children, Frank age 7 and Martha, age 3.

The 1880 census shows M. B. in Athens, now married to Cornelia E. Maddox. They were married Dec. 28, 1872 at the home of her parents in Cartersville. They had the following children listed on the Census:

Ethel M. age 6
John age 4
Paul age 3
Lois age 1

Frank and Martha were also listed.

Evangelism, education, fellowship and stewardship are persistent themes in the history of First Baptist Church, Athens, Georgia. The 24 ministers who have served the church since it was founded in 1830 as Athens Baptist Church have provided variations of these themes, but the emphasis has remained constant along with the determination to provide a downtown church for the whole Athens area. The church was constituted January 31, 1830, in the Presbyterian Church building primarily by persons from Trail Creek Baptist Church. The church adopted a covenant and rules for operating conferences in 1840, and it was incorporated as Athens Baptist Church in 1866. The name was changed to First Baptist Church in 1944.

The 15 charter members included natives of Ireland, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia as well as Georgia. The Reverend James Shannon, a native of Ireland and professor at the University of Georgia, was the first pastor. Stephen Borders was the first deacon and the only one until 1848 when two others were elected. Junius Hillyer was the first clerk.

There are no records after 1819 so I think he might have died about then. I can not find a will or letters of administration for George ray. His wife's name was Mary Dearing ray. Some time ago you looked in your book about abstracts from Georgia newspapers and found an entryabout Solomon Ray. Solomon Ray had lived on land in Clarke co Ga and the land was apparently owned by somone else in 1812 an was auctioned off. Would you mind looking in your book and seeing if George Ray living in Clarke co or Jasper co Ga is listed. He was Solomon ray's father. the last record anyone has been able tofind about George Ray was in 1819 when his son Samuel Ray signed George Ray's Clarke co Ga land back over to him. Apparently George had asked Samuel to try and sell it for him but he was not able to. I do not know when George Ray died but it might have been in 1819 or the early 1820's but I can not find a will or letters of administration so I hought if I could find when he sold his Clarke co Ga land I would know where he was living when he sold his land or if he died and did not sell it who he left it to. I have ound land recordes that say Brushy Creek was in Jackson co Ga in he early 1800's. I found one land record that said it was i Clarke co Ga. That land record was in 1802. George Ray died after 1819 in probably Clarke co Ga. I can not find a will for him. He owned land in Clarke co Ga. there must have been a will or letters of aministration but I can not find any info about his death. Many of the other Ga counties had land lot numbers and districts but Clarke co Ga formed before the first land lottery did not use the district and land lot system. For example George Ray's land was in the fork of the north and middle fork of the Oconee River. How do you find a land record for a description like that. In the early 1800's it listed the neighbor's names to help identify where the propertywas. IF I could find a land record showing where George Ray sold his land i probably the early 1820's or if I could find where George Ray left his land to someone it would help determine when and where he died. If anyone has land reocrd from the early 1820's please help or if anyone has will records showing a George Ray please help. Thanks

Can anyone identify/locate a _?_ Hope Ch. Cemetery in the vicinity of the 1347 Georgia Militia District in the fall of 1922 in Clarke County, Georgia, or an adjoining county. This is the burial place on a death certificate I found on the Georgia Archives web site for my 2g-uncle, Edd Tool b.c. August 1861 Barnwell District, South Carolina, who died October 19, 1922, in the 1347 GMD of Clarke County, Georgia. The first word in the church name is unreadable. Edgar(aka Ed L./Edward/Thomas E.)Toole) was a brother to two of my great grand parents, all children of R. I. Manning Toole and Mary Greene who are on the 1880 Oconee County, Georgia, census after moving from Barnwell County, South Carolina, c. 1871-1874. Edgar Toole's name was so mangled on the various census that I only found him by accident after 1880. 1900 Clarke Co., 1910 Oconee Co., 1920 Oglethorpe Co. and his widow is in Clarke Co. in 1930. I would very much like to locate any living descendents of Edgar Toole still in the Clarke-Oconee County area. I was told a family story about some in this family being murdered in some sort of store robbery c. 1907-11. Edgar Toole m. 1st Louisa/Laura Chancey 13 Dec. 1880 and 2nd Samantha Brooks Dec. 24, 1887. They had about eight children some of whose names were unreadable due to black marks on the census pages. He is not listed with his family on the 1870, Early County, District 28 census but it shows:

Ricks, Virginia - age 38, born in Georgia, John R. - age 17, Daniel H - age 16, Mary Lizzie - age 10, Samuel J - age 8, Jordan L - age 7, Rosie/Rescie V - age 5 and Martha D - age 3.

Virginia Ricks, was the 2nd wife to Daniel Ricks, and her maiden name was Virginia Harriet Smith or Harriet Virginia Smith, daughter of Samuel Smith and Mary ?.

In the 1880, Early Co, E.D. 96 Census, It shows Virginia living with parents as:

Smith, Samuuel - age 80 born in N.C., Mary - wife - age 76 born in Georgia, Virginia H - age 45 - daughter born in Georgia, Mary E - age 19 - granddaughter - born GA, Lee - age 15 - grandson, and Martha - age 13 - granddaughter.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Oconee Street School in Athens, GA

It has been used in recent years as the Athens Boys & Girls Club, but is slated for demolition. A local group is trying to save it as a historic building. It was built 1908-1913 on the west side of Carr's Hill.

From the 1971 edition of the Oconee Hill Cemetery survey, edited by Charlotte Thomas Marshall & published by the Athens Historical Society, I found them buried on East Hill, lot 10 1/4 (subdivided lot):

Nisbet, Mrs. Penelope d. 5 Jul 1834, in her 58th yr; w/o Dr. James Nisbet [Note: b. Henry Co., VA, d/o Sallie & Thomas Cooper who moved to Wilkes Co., GA. See Hull’s Annals, pp. 468-70 for children & grandchildren.]

Nisbet, Dr. James d. 3 Apr 1832, in his 65th yr. [Note: s/o John Nisbet on Rowan Co., NC, who moved to Greene Co., GA, after the Revolution; m. 1794 in Greene Co. Penelope Cooper; delegate to 1709 Constitutional Convention; schoolmate of Dr. Moses Waddell, UGA President 1819-1829; moved to Athens, c. 1819, UGA Trustee 1820-32; ruling elder of Presbyterian Church for 25 yrs.; obituary in the Southern Banner states he died in Greene Co.; younger brother John Nisbet buried in V63.]

Notes in brackets are from Mrs. Marshall's annotations. They evidently were originally buried elsewhere, probably in the Old City Cemetery on Jackson Street, then were moved to the new Oconee Hill Cemetery when it opened in 1856.

I'm following up with folks looking for Rev War George. I'm decsended from him thru George Jr., George III, James Thomas, Henry Bass Sr and Henry Bass Jr. After the Rev War, George went to Ga and then Cherokee County, Al. He died in Ga in 1840. I went back thru my info and found where I received a very detailed summary on the Descendants of William Clifton. It shows William married to Susan Sharp and the parents of Rev War George. It shows George and Clement as brothers. I need to find who sent that to me and follow up with them. I thought it was someone descended from Clement.

There is a Rays chapel methodist in Eastville, near watkinsville. I am not sure when it was established. From a cemetery list, the oldest grave I see listed there is 1829.

Guardianship Bond for Ann Gann

In going through the state archives card file that are available through the Georgia Virtual Vault, I came across a notecard regarding a Guardian's bond.

The card reads as follows:
Gann, Elizabeth

Mch.2, 1818. William P. Jackson, with John Nutt surety; Bond as guardian of Ann Gann, an illegitimate child of Elizabeth Gann. Administrators' and Guardians' Bonds, 1811-1839, p. 125, Clarke County.

A couple of questions. Which of the many Gann lineages does this Elizabeth belong to? If Mr. Jackson is putting up the bond as guardian, was he Ann's father or Elizabeth's beau?

Browning & Kinney are my ancestors.

Benjamin & Eli Browning came from Maryland. They 1st settled Jefferson County, GA and purchased land on Crooked Creek about 1802. No proof Eli ever moved to Jackson County but Benjamin and his family did. His wife was Margaret. Their daughter Sarah "Sally" Browning married Jonathan Kinney. Their Daughter Nancy married Ramson Nicols, another daughter married a Smith. I have a good bit of info on their decedents.

We do not believe there was a man named Elkin Kinney, it is learned that the records of the Talassee colony that Wilson used to write his "Early History of Jackson County" were copied by children learning to read and write and contained a number of errors, most common of these errors were the conjunction of two last names in to a single name, thus Elkin & Kinney would be two different men last names Elkin & Kinney. I have found no record of a Elkin family but it is believed the Kinney was Daniel Kinney / Kinna. There is an Ellis family associated with the Browning's of Crooked Creek.

Kinney, Nicols and others are all found on land near Crooked Creek that was originally granted 1785 to William Few.

Humphries is listed as "Unfres" living on land granted to Few next door to Kinney

I'm an investigating novice so I need some help. I am an alumni member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society at the University of Georgia. Being almost 190 years old, some oral history of the organization concerning our founding generation has become slightly distorted so I'm trying to set the record straight.

Anyway, according to the current legend, back in 1820 at the time of our creation, two of our founding members were supposedly a "Edwin Mason" and a "Henry Mason"- both students at the University and brothers. However, nothing from our remaining records (sadly much of our documentation was destroyed or stolen during the Northern occupation of our Hall) indicates these two ever existed. The only secondary source I could find close to this (UGA Catalogue of 1906) listed a Edward H. Mason, class of 1824. Also listed is a Edwin Mounger and a Henry Mounger in the same class as Mason. The catalogue also claims Mason as a founder of our organization but that's the only bio. info it provides for either Mason or the Moungers. Now it gets a bit more complicated since the University of Georgia yearbook for 1886 listed a Edwin H. Macon of Greensborough, Georgia and a Henry Manger of Athens, Georgia as part of the founding generation (no mention of any Masons).

Since I doubt the accuracy of all these documents, I'm trying to find contemporary documentation- census, marriage licenses, etc. that any of these persons actually existed and that their lifespan and achievements could match the secondary sources and the Society's sources I have. Like I mentioned earlier, the only facts I know is that whoever helped found our organization had to be close to college age in 1820 (which means anywhere from 16 to 22ish) and that the yearbook list "Henry Manger" as from Athens while "Edward H. Macon" was supposedly from Greensborough, Ga. I've already tried Thomas Reed's History of the University of Georgia and he fails to list the 1824 class members and mentions nothing about any of these gentlemen as founders of our Society in his Phi Kappa Chapter. Since Reed was an avid historian and alumnus of our Society I tend to think he was right.

If you have any information please let me know or if you could point me in the right dirrection to search I would be greatful. Thank you.

Pardon the interruption but I was ease-dropping on your message board and thought I might add something. I think GJN Wilson (Gustavus James Nash Wilson) wrote the "Early History of Jackson County". This is all from memory. That book, was republished as "Georgia Blood", later. I interviewed GJN's ggrandaughter in 2001, when she was only 90 yrs old, and still had a good memory. She gave me two hat boxes full of genealogy research which amounts to an unpublished manuscript. I had a lot sorted out before my accursed computer crash a few years back. Anyway, Hilda Bell Alexander, the ggrandaughter mentioned previously, told me that the Kinney's and Alexanders, were "staunch, Irish, Blue-stocking Presbyterians". I have made a few other posts today, relating to these line, that you can check. The Alexanders, Fields, and other of my line, are buried at Mizpah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, on Jefferson River Road, near the Jackson Co./Clarke Co. line. My e-mail is russellfields@comcast.net. In my first reply I made a mistake. The copse of trees that was charged by Wright's Brigade on 2 Jul 1863 and Pickett on 3 Jul 1863 was on Cemetery Ridge, not Cemetery Hill.

Do you have a copy of this soldier's compiled service record? If not you can order a copy from the Washington Memorial Library in Macon, GA for a very reasonable price and they have a fairly quick turnaround time, too. Sometimes there is info in these records that gives the county of residence and it always gives the town or city where the soldier enlisted. One of my great-great granduncles was in companies K and L of the 3rd GA. Your man most likely was killed during Wright's Charge (named after the brigade the 3rd GA was in) which took place on 2 Jul 1863. This charge took place almost at the same spot where Pickett's Charge took place on 3 Jul 1863. I've read that Wright's Charge gave Robert E. My 6th ggmother was Mary Ann Mounger, daughter of Henry Mounger d. 1797, and probably sister of "your" Edwin and Henry Mounger.
There is a book "The Mongers A Family of Old Virginia" by Billie Jo Monger, at the DAR and perhaps elsewhere, that has info on this family.

I don't know why this info didn't come up for me on Ancestry.com.

There was a small obit notice for Charles Stark in the Arkadelphia, Arkansas papers dated 10--12-1899, which raises some question about the the exact year of his death. The obit was sent in by John Rogers McDaniel. He wanted to let all of Captain Charles' old Confederate veteran friends in Arkansas know of his passing.

I'll research the Griffin papers and will be getting his service records from the Arkansas History Commission soon.

Fortunately, I have made contact with a man in Arkansas who is an expert in Confederate history in that area. He says they recently received a phone call from a 97-year-old woman who had a box of letters in the attic from one of the actual soldiers in Captain Charles' Company B. The letters are quite detailed and account for nearly every movement and engagement of the Company.

Hopefully, piece by piece, I'll be able to recreate his life and tell his forgotten story to the rest of our family.

Captain Charles Starke was the nephew of my gg-grandfather, Charles Cargile. Mr. Cargile was very close to his sister's husband, James Hervey Stark, and named his third son, John Stark Cargile.

The Stark family name has continued in our family for four generations now and I thought it fitting that we should know something about this man and his family.

I've been searching for Stark(e) descendents in Georgia but have found no leads. Perhaps someone will read this thread who has some information.

Brooke, I found Charles S. Stark, age 36, farmer, with $1500 value real estate living with his mother Mary A. Stark, 50, "keeping house" on real estate valued at $9000 & $1500 in personal estate, in Cabin District, Spalding Co., GA - Griffin Post Office, in 1870.

Charles may have died in Athens in 1897, but more than likely his body/casket was shipped by railroad back to Griffin to be buried near his parents. This was not that unusual even at the time of the Civil War.

The Atlanta Constitution newspapers on Ancestry.com don't have very many issues from 1897, if that's the year of his death, so I didn't turn up any mention of his death. Being a Confederate veteran, his passing probably warranted a pretty good write-up - I would check the Griffin area newspapers for an obituary.

I don't know if the person performing the look up for you hunted an old transcription of the Oconee Hill Cemetery, Clarke Co., Athens, GA. This is one of the oldest cemteries.

It is not in the general cemetery book of Clarke Co Cemeteries.

They are currently working on a new transcription of the cemetery.

Thanks for the extra info. They must have shipped him home. I found both Andrew Jackson Cobb and wife and lots of other Cobbs, Sledges, Ruckers, Smiths and Erwins. The Cobbs were a big name around here... there is a large historic house, the T. R. R. Cobb house that has just currently reopened.

Andrew Jackson Cobb and everyone but Charles are in Lot 61 of the Oconee Hill Cemetery, the largest local cemetery of that period.

I wonder if he was sent back to Butts County.

I did check the general cemetery book also and he is nowhere to be found. I'm pretty sure newspapers exist for that time as I've seen excerpts from them. I believe it was called the "Southern Banner" or "Southern Herald". Since you have a death year, and he was so famous himself (not to mention his family), I bet he got a nice obit in the paper. Both the local libraries (Athens Clarke County Library) and the University of Georgia have complete microfilms, probably Salt Lake City does too.

Thanks so much for your quick response.

The information I have on Charles S. Starke is that he never marrie and died at the home of his niece, Starke Campbell Cobb (wife of Andrew Jackson Cobb) in Athens, Georgia.

He was Captain of Company B of the 1st Ark Infantry Regiment (Colquitt) and saw action at Shiloh then left the CSA a few months later.

Charles was actually born in Jackson, Butts County, GA. His father, James Hervey Starke, was a judge and legislator in the Jackson, Ga. My information shows that the family originally lived in Griffin, GA then removed a few miles away to Butts County when Charles was around 4 years old.

Charles' mother, Mary Ann Cargile, was born in Jasper County, GA.

I checked several books without success for you: Oconee Hill Cemetery book, Clarke County cemeteries ( 2 volumes). The neighboring counties are Oconee, Oglethorpe, Madison and Jackson, all had nothing. Other counties in the area are Barrow, Walton, and Morgan, but our library doesn't have cemetery books for them. The only Starks were a Mary, Addie, and Pleas?, no men listed to go with these women.

If you have any other information about why you think he was in this area, I could perhaps figure out what is going on.

A researcher in Clarke co Ga said they would do an 1808 Clarek co Ga tax look up a few month ago and never replied so if anyone has the Clarek co Ga tax digest for 1808 there is an entry where George Ray paid the taxes for a John Ray. In 1807 George Ray paid the taxes for Solomon Ray and the entry said he was paying the taxes for his son Solomon Ray. Would someone look at the 1808 Clarke co Ga tax record and see if it says George Ray was paying taxes for his son John Ray or if it sayd he was paying taxes for John Ray. My ancestor was George Ray and he lived in Clarke co Ga in the Watkinsville Ga area. His son Samuel Ray attended the Mars Hill Baptist Church 1805-1806 but George Ray or his son Solomon Ray were not listed as members. Maybe they attended another church in the Watkinsville Ga area. Would anyone know of another church that existed in the Watkinsville Ga arera in the early 1800's? Samuel Ray attended the Trail Creek Baptist Church after he left the Mars Hill Baptist Church. Would anyone know if there are resources that would show the membership lists for other churches in the early 1800's in the Watkinsville Ga area that might list George Ray or his son Solomon Ray. I understand you know more about Clarke co Ga tax records and land records and other Clarke co Ga records than anyone. Would you mind helping me if yu have the time. I will be glad to pay for your services if you like. My ancestor was George Ray who lived in Jackson co ga in the mid to late 1790's in Jackson co Ga and when Clarke co Ga was formed in 1801 his land was then in Clarke co Ga. I found tax records showing George Ray were on the tax records in Clarke co Ga until abo0ut 1809. I found a land record wehre apparently George Ray asked his son Samule Ray to sell his Clarke co land for him but apparently he did not sell it because in 1819 Samuel Ray signed George Ray's land back over to him. This is the last record any researcher has found about George Ray. I know he was married and apparently his wife died (I do not know her name) and he remarried in 1811 to Mary Dearing who was the widow of Thomas Dearing (Deering) who died in 1809 in Wilkes co Ga. I think they married in Balsdwin co Ga or Jasper co Ga. I don't know where they lived. Maybe it was Clarke co Ga but probaly Jasper co Ga. I don't know. I know George Ray would have either sold his Clarek co Ga land or if he died his wife Mary Dearing Ray would have sold it or he left it to his children. I can not find any land record wehre he sold his Clarke co Ga land and I can not find a will or letters of administration for George Ray. His son Solomon Ray died in 1813 in Jasper co Ga. My Mother's Full name was still Helen Charlotte Clark-Barton back in 1973. Her father's name was Adelbert and mother's name is Helen Kaiser- Clark. Can't find either mother/g'mother in the death index so with this I still believe they are still alive. All we (her 5 children) know is that her birth year is 1938 and was married to our father, Thomas Barton. We do not know when they wed. But know they divorced October 27, 1967. Also our brother Billy passed away last year and our Mother has no knowledge of her son's passing.

Is there anyone out there with a will book? I am trying to locate my brick wall, Alexander MADDUX (also spelled MADDOX & MATTOX). He died before 1810. It is rumored he died in Greene County, but I have searched there and he did not. I have been to four counties total and have not found his estate. However, I have found mention of his estate in his son's estate (in the estate of Benjamin MADDUX of Putnam County).

So, I know Alexander died before 1810, and I know he had an estate, but it's unclear as to which county. If you have a will book available, will you please look for Alexander MADDUX? Thank you!

Anderson W. Smith, born 1814, unknown co of GA. No information on parents or siblings although they were probably from NC. I have been told that on the GENEALOGY LIBRARY. COM web site there is a listing of the marriage of Anderson W. Smith and Sarah E. Pendergrass taken from the Clark County GA Marriages From 1798-1850, page 22. I am unable to access that site as I am not a member. I have looked at the marriage list posted here on the Clark County site and I do not find this marriage listed.

Anderson's wife, Sarah E. Pendergrast/Pendergrass, born 1815 in unknown county of GA. No information on parents or siblings though they may have been from VA and SC.

Anderson's children: Joseph Alonzo b. GA; Stephen H., b. GA; Sarah, b.TX and Cynthia America, b. TX.
There is also an F. Y.(female) shown but not sure if she is a child or some other family member.

I would appreciate any help in finding this family and their
ancestors. Will share what little other info I have.

I need to know if anyone out there does look ups at the courthouse who could see if there is a Will for David H. [Hannah] Griffith/eth. Died in 1853 about.

It may have the connection I have been searching for the last 9 years.

Also if there a any living males of this Griffith/eth family from John Griffith and Ann McElrath that would be willing to do the DNA testing on the Griffith DNA site.

I have been searching to link my William Griffith b. bet 1796-1800 to the correct parents and David H. Griffith was in Walton Co. at the same time William got married. It's my only clue and any help would be very appreciated.

Warren Thompson was born in Clarke Co., Georgia on May 10, 1802. His father died when Warren was a boy. Warren was adopted by Thomas Hill. Thomas Hill (with young Warren Thompson, Capt. John Watts, and Thomas Hill's two sons and a brother) was one of the earliest white settlers of Butler Co. Alabama in 1816. Someone has suggested that Warren's mother's name was "Rutha".. I am trying to determine Warren's father's name, the maiden name of his mother, and the names of any siblings, etc.

Oconee Hill Cemetery

Does anyone have any information on the vandalism that happened over the weekend? According to the news it stated somone broke into a family mauseleum, 6 vaults were within it. Two vaults had been damage, and one had some of the bones stolen. Does anyone know the family name or how one can find out? I have many relatives buried at this cemetery. I have one more bit of information on Sarah Hinesley, her birthdate which is September 11, 1816. These folks are not in my direct line of decent and I have not followed up on the information that I have.

I checked my Oconee County Cemetery book and one for Barrow County and did not find them buried in this area so it's very possible that they relocated to Alabama.

First, when you say "estate", do you mean Will? You can have one without the other. As far as "will books" you would have to search your county Library for a transcript or view at either the county courthouse or State Archives. As far as Clarke County goes, there are "loose" estate records kept in a climatized room at the courthouse, and microfilmed at the archives in Jonesboro. If there is no will, you should be looking for an "intestate" record which involves sometimes two years of inventory, appraisal, and sell of estate to pay outstanding debts

Sorry to get back on the subject, but I have William Gann Sr. born 1780 NC. I have located him in Clarke County GA as early as 1811, tax records. (His son,not proven definately) William Gann Jr. Married Mary "Polly" Stephens, Who later married (twice) James Shaw in 1829. She married James before legally divorced from William. If John and Nathan would have left the name alone, we would be fine from here, however. All I can add is that Wm Sr. went by Billy and my GGrandfather went by Willie.

Seeking information on John F Peed who enlisted in CSA Company I, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry during April 1861.
The companies of the 3rd Regiment were recruited in the counties of Clarke, Burke, Dawson, Dade, Madison, Baldwin, and Oconee.
John F Peed died 2 July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Trying to determine which of these counties was home to John F Peed. Believe he is my 2nd Great grandfather.
Have searched for more information on him for over 20 years. Help appreciated.

I don't know if you got a response. I checked the book for you as well as the Oconee Hill Cemetery book. He is not listed in either. There is a John Edwards in the Oconee County cemetery book - born 1822 died 1887 on page 203. He is listed as being buried iin the Edwards Cemetery. The oldest Edwards around is Solomon Edwards, buried in Clarke County, who was a Revolutionary soldier b. 1756 - d. 1844. His grave whereabout are known but there is only one other marked grave in the family cemetery and it is not John. Hope this helps.

I did check the book for you but with no luck. The closest name that I could find was J. C. Bowling born 10 Aug 1819 died 22 Jan 1890 buried in Winterville City Cemetery, Section E between 5th and 6th Street. Our local DAR chapter has tried to find the graves of many of the Revolutionary patriots who are recorded as ending up here, but few of the graves were marked around here

I have some info that was copied from Isaac M. Kenney's Bible on September 20, 1864. Isaac's middle name was "Massillon". Isaac Massillon Kenney was my husband's great, great grandfather.

Henry Carlton Kenney and Emmie Fears had a daughter named Francis Kenney. Frances Kenney married Edward Van Howell. They had a daughter named Jacquelyn Ruth Howell and she is my mother-in-law.

And, in a very strange turn of events, I contacted the Griffin-Spalding Historical Society just as another Stark descendant was contacting them about the same family. What an unusual and fortunate coincidence for me because this family member has done extensive research on the James Hervey Stark and Mary Ann Cargile Stark family.

How strange that, after almost 100 years, we both would be searching for this family at the same time. What are the odds of that?

I look forward to combining all this research into a historical narrative of the two families, Cargile and Stark.

I have photographed the toombstones that are marked. These are located in the Princeton Methodist Church Cemtery, Clarke Co., Athens, GA.

The Blair section has numerous unmarked graves but has a momument with both Blair and Parr on the stones.
You can look at these photos on line on the above site. Natalie Davis graciously placed my photos on line.

I also have one stone that I have been unable to photograph. However, I can read it from a distance.

It reads Mary Louise Crowe 1869-1913, son Henry Roy 1850-1942.

There are numerous other rocks that are unidentified.

If anyone knows of anyone buried in this cemetery with only a rock, please post a note here.

We are attempting to find obits to identify the unmarked graves.

Temperance West buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery?

I am researching Temperance (Temple) West whom I believe is my gggg grandmother. She was an unfortuante victim of the Woolfork murders in 1887 and is supposedly buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery. I was unable to find a compete cemetery inventory on-line to verify. (I have ordered Shadow Chasers but have yet to read it.)
Can anyone verify that she is buried in Oconee Hill and her birth date?
I am only familiar with her having one daughter, Sarah, born in 1824 who married a Jesse Harrell in Stewart County, GA. If anyone has any other information I would appreciate it.

I've been curious because Permelia, Wm and Hiram are not included in most researchers list of children. I realize the second David would make someone think this was a grandchild or other relative. Is there any evidence that the other three are not children of Jonathan and Mary?

If they are discounted as children on the basis of age for Permelia, July and Wm being the same, then the following needs to be considered. Multiple births are common in this family. Zachariah (son of Jonathan) had twin girls, Adelia and Cormelia. They are listed as "Big" and "Little" on the 1870 Heard Co Census with the word twins written in the margin. Adelia was my mother's grandmother. One of Adelia's grandchildren had twins and another had triplets. I don't know my biology; so don't know if multiple births can follow a paternal line or not.

Janice-- Good to hear back from you. We have looked at a lot of stuff since we last corresponded. Even went over to Athens, Ga. The Birmingham Library has a lot of stuff and I copied the Revolutionary War pension info from George Clifton. His wife Milly (Brown) applied for a pension in 1840 at his death. One of the papers in the file said that he was son of William Clifton, first attorney general of Georgia. But that looks like it is from an inquiry from someone from Sanannah, Ga. sent in 1904. We feel pretty comfortable on what we from George (the Revolutionary War one) on. We are going to try to go to Savannah this summer. Any suggestions?? I'd be glad to share what we have. Rick

I have a Lucinda Johnson, b. 1832 in Clarke County, m. James Addison McMurtrey. He was awarded disability after the Civil War for his Confederate service and died approx. 1900-1901. I think Lucinda's father was a W.W. Johnson but this is all I have (and it may be wrong). I have a photo of her brother but no name. James J. Booth - Civil War

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a James J. Booth who served in the Civil War, probably on the Union side as this pension card exists (Federal card, not state). I'm going to order the pension records, but I'm not sure how long that will take, or if it will answer my question on who his last wife was.

He may have had a brief marriage to a woman named Cora A (Allie, Alchorn) Moore, maybe going by the surname Byrd/Bird. He probably died around 1905/6. Cora remarried in 1908. She was NOT married to Booth during the 1900 census. During the 1920 Census Cora was married to Arthur Madison Morgan. So "my" Cora won't be on the census as a Booth. It's Cora that I'm really interested in.

I found, on Ancestry, a Civil War Pension Index Card from what looks like 1906. Booth, James J and Cora Allie were named. Pension applied for from Georgia.

Sorry I don't have more information. I haven't firmly pinned down this Booth, yet. So far, in the census I've found a black Cora Booth(e) and a white Cora Booth(e) who was the wife of Chandler. Neither would be the right one. I'm trying to see if I can confirm that this Cora, wife of James, is a different Cora from the one who later married Arthur Madison Morgan.

While Cora was from Elbert/Madison Counties, the marriage may have taken place in Hall or Clarke County (she was in Hall Co. in 1900 and Clarke Co. in 1910).

I have spent hundreds of dollars in over 10 county searches and trips from Alabama to GA. As well, I have paid for a State Archives search.

I had just hoped someone had an abstracts book at home and might be kind enough to search in it for me. Since posting that message I have found more pertinent information which makes Clarke County not so important. Sometime after 1899 the following appeared in the Banner.

Mr. Boggs' former family name was Livingston. It will be a matter of interest to know that ex-Chancellor William E. Boggs, of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, would have had as his name "William Ellison Livingston" had not his ancestor changed his name to Boggs many, many years ago. Dr. Boggs is a direct descendant of a Scotch-Irish family, the head of which bore the name of Livingston centuries ago. Dr. Boggs is a relative of the famous African explorer, David Livingston, and has many relatives now living by that name. In one of the English wars, this ancestor, who moved from Scotland to Ireland, went to the front as an officer in the Irish army, returning several years later after having done valiant service. He had married an Irish heiress and through his wife had inherited considerable estate, known as the Estate of Boggs. When he returned from the war, Livingston became know as the Laird of Boggs, and subsequently dropped the name of Livingston and went by the name of Boggs from then on to other generations....

I am trying to find the original newspaper article, but I do not know the date the article was published.

Cannon Sr. She was a University of Georgia graduate and was retired as head of the Spanish department with the Bradenton, Fla., school system. She was a member of Athens First Baptist Church where she was church pianist. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at Oconee Hill Cemetery with Dr. Bill Ross officiating. I have a copy of the old Phillips Family Bible that came from the SanJacinto Lib. in Liberty TX. One reason for the confusing Daniels is this. It list one Daniel that was born1760/1770 a list of all their children are also there beginning with Polly, ? it is very hard to read Danile 1792. Death list first Daniel 1810 married Elizabeth died in 1836. Daniel died in 1883 Elizabeth died 1885 several more deaths and births now I know that is why so many different things on Daniel E is the son. The Father I think is Daniel A or H. not sure. He went from VA to NC where all of their children were born. I am not sure of order but Polly 89,Benjamen, Silas, Daniel, John my side married a Elizabeth , William, Eliza A, Permelia, Hope this makes the mud a little clear. My scanner is on the blink or I would scan the Bible on site for all to see.

Georgia Indian territory passports

Anybody have information on what is called "Georgia Passports". I learned today that when someone needed to travel from the state of Georgia into another state back in the 1800's, they first had to appear in court and explain the reason for traveling thru Indian Territory. The court then would decide if they should grant a "Passport". It is my understanding there is a lot of family information in these proceedings. Are there any passport records available in Clarke, Jackson, Marion or Wilkes Counties. If so, where can I locate them.

Keep in mind there is not a comprehensive list of members for Mars Hill Baptist Church. We are very fortunate the first book is available. It's a transcript by Frances W. Reid, from a copy of the church minute books (which were later destroyed by fire).

There's a list of the initial members when the church was constituted on 1 June 1799, and some names as folks joined, or were mentioned for some infraction of church rules, but it is not comprehensive. For example, on 8 Aug 1802 and 10 Sept 1802, it's mentioned that about 20 members were added, and 29, respectively -- but no names were given in the church minutes. Also, other folks are mentioned in the book who had not been named anywhere as new members -- so there were a number of others.

In my opinion, when folks lived in the immediate Mars Hill area, and some of the family is named in the Mars Hill Church book, I feel fairly sure that other family living in that area were members or attendees of that church.

I don't have info on any other churches that might have been in the area, but generally for Baptist and Methodist churches, very few early records survived. (I'm in another state, and just very grateful that my library has the Mars Hill Church book.

Solomon Ray married Jane Echols in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga and by 1799 they were in Jackson co Ga and when Clarke co Ga was formed in 1801 their land was in Clarke co Ga. Solomon Ray died in 1813. They attended the Mars Hill Baptist Church near present day Watkinsville Ga. Would anyone have any records showing how Solomon Ray died in 1813 and where he was buried? There was a George Ray and a Samuel Ray listed in the tax records living near Solomon Ray. I am also trying to find who his parents were. Thanks, Ross

My ancestor was Solomon Ray who married Jane Chols in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga. They went to Jackson co Ga in the late 1790's and when Clerke co Ga was formed in 1801 they were living in Clarke co Ga. I found a tax digest for Clarke co Ga but I do not remember what year it was but probaly in the early 1800's since they left Clarke co Ga about 1809 and went to Jasper co Ga. The tax digest I fund listed Solomon Ray then Milner Echols then James Echols in a row. In a census reprot that would mean they were neighbors but in a tax digest does that mean that they all went to where they paid taxes if that is the way they did it or if a tax collector went to them then they must have lived close to each other. I am trying to find who Jane Echol's parents were and I found it interesting that Solomon Ray was listed and then Milner Echols then James Echols. Hi Folks! I'm searching for ANY information on my great grandfather, James Andrew Moore. He first shows up in the Fannin CO. 1860 census, aged 19 (DOB is 17 OCT 1840), living in the household of a James Parks and working as a miller. He served in the Civil War, and afterward married Sarah Matilda (Legg) Huckabee on 30 JUL 1865. They had six children together. He pasted away 06 NOV 1913. I THINK he was born in Georgia, and his Civil War pension application seems to say he was born in Clarke County. (It's hard to read, but there's few other county names it could be.) As far as I know he lived his entire life in Morganton, save for his war service. Some of his children moved to Hazlehurst, where my grandfather, John Avery Moore, married Latitia Aleph Latimer. Looking for any information and photos for Wally Flemin Jones,Sr. and second wife Louise unknown maiden name. Wally & Louise married in Clarke County, Georgia on April 19,1948. Wally was age 59 and Louise ( listed on the cert. has Mrs.Louise Thomas ) was age 37. Making them 22 years difference in age. Wally and Louise moved to Ohio. He later died in Nov. 1966 a widow. I have no dates for her other than she was born @ 1911. Louise would have died between April 1948 and Nov. 1966. In Wally's obituary it states he lived in Ohio for the past 15 years there in 1951. Only 3 years after there marriage. Also, in Wally's obituary it listed a daughter Mrs.Leonard Taylor. I don't know who this daughter could have been. I have found numerous items about a John H. Newton who lived in Clarke County. He was born about 1800 in Georgia and had a daughter Ann Olivia. I am trying to prove that his daughter Ann Olivia married My great grandfather Henry White. All the evidence points there but I cannot find anything that proves it. I would appreciate any help. Also any information on John Newton's parents etc. would be appreciated.

Just a reminder in using research by others to always verify the facts.

As well as researchers do their jobs, there is always room for error, even in census and other records.

I have been told by a living relative that on my Anna "Annie" Lee Herndon Epps buried in Mars Hill Cemetery that the date on the birth date on the toombstone was just a guess. She passed in 1952. Annie was the second wife of Early O. Epps. His first wife was Susan "Sunnie" Hodges.

The Mars Hill History has her listed as Annie "Sunnie" Hodges Epps which is incorrect. I am a great grand daughter of Annie. I attended her funeral in 1952.

Just thought I would mention how this type of error can occur.

Another example is the census. I found Anna Lee Herndon in the census listed as Henderson. But the family is next door to Aaron Lewis, so know that it is Herndon. Example of spelling and writing error.

A lot of people back in 1860 1870 did not read and write.

The vandalism was to a large mausolem in the shape of a church. The familys buried there are Sarah Taylor and her grandchildren, two boys with the last name of Lucas.

The Daniel books I think are new ones in Oconee library, Watkinsville, GA. I've not seen them in the Athens Regional Clarke Co Library.

They may have only one copy. The genealogy rooms here you can not check the books out of the room. Have to use them in the room.

Makes it hard sometimes.

I have bought a lot of the books.

The Daniel one I will ramble thru one of my next trips to Oconee Co. I live a county from there. They are open M-
Thurs 10 to 9. The Athens Library genealogy section is open noon to 6 except on Mon to 9.

I usually go over there on Monday nite.

And don't go out to Oconee too often. They don't have microfish of newspapers except for the Oconee enterprise.

Alfred Franklin Daniel(l)'s father would be Stephen Daniel(l).

I need to prove that Mary Ellen Daniel(l) is sister to Alfred Franklin and son and daughter of Stephen Daniel(l) and his first marriage to Elizabeth "Betsy" Melton.

Since Alfred is not my lineage I don't have any names of his children.

Once we have proof that Alfred Franklin and Mary Ellen are brother and sister and s/o and d/o Stephen Daniel(l) then one more step leads us to William Daniell Sr. ("the Patriot).

Easy huh? Did you ever get your hands on the People of Mars Hill Baptist Church book?

Note: All my Davenport and Jennings info received from Jennings family bible and Melba Nixon Midkiff. I have the driving directions to the Jennings Cemetery but I have never been there. I have also found a Thomas Newton Epps in Lexington, GA. Still living and the grand son of William Patrick Henry Epps (Morgan Co., Ga). WPH Epps was the oldest son of Thomas North and Penelope Jennings Epps. My great grandfather was Early O. (Oscar) Epps who married first Susan "Sunnie" Hodges and second Anna Lee Hearndon (Herndon) Walton Co., GA.

I can not find a grave for Susan "Sunnie" Hodge(s). The Mars Hill Book says she is buried beside Early O. Epps in the Mars Hill Cemetery. But I attended the funeral of Anna Lee Hearndon Epps who is buried in that grave.

A couple of my dad's older cousins said that Susan was buried at Berthabara Church on Monroe Highway. I found some Hodge there but not one for her. And it appears some stones are missing from the plot.

Thomas North Epps was the son of William and Sara Alexander Epps.

My parents use to live on Jimmy Daniel Road and there is a Daniel cemetery on that road. It is located in Clarke Co., GA near the Oconee Co, GA line.

You might look in goggle.com and search Oconee County, Georgia library, look up their phone number and address and call or write them for the name of the book and how to order.

These I know are in my line:Wm Daniell, Polly, Jeremiah Melton Daniell, Beaton Daniell, Alfred Daniell. Stephen, Moses, and Robert also. My grandfathers name was Frank Newton Daniell, his father was Jeremiah Moses Daniell, and his father was Alfred I believe. I have pictures of most of the Daniells, and pages and pages on Daniells. It is interesting to see the duplications of names in this family so it is confusing to find the right one. My grandpa Frank's father was in the battle of Atlanta during the Civil war - they called his Jerry, his name was Jeremiah Moses, and I have the bible which he carried during the war, plus a picture of him in his uniform and a picture of him in his uniform when he was 90 I believe or somewhere around that age. Will get back to you next week.
My grandmother who married Frank was an Olive, but she was not a Daniell before she married. Toni

I am trying to locate information concerning an old house (circa 1875) that may have been built or occupied by William J. and Wiliam Z. Hancock. I am trying to find out when it was built and by whom it was built. It is located on Astondale Road in the Bishop community in Oconee County. The two gentlemen noted are buried in the Bishop cemetery. Wm J. died in 1937 (born 1850), and Wm. Z. died in 1936 (born 1885). Possibly father and son? The property may have also belonged to the Mayne, Woodis, or Thomas families (nearby landowners), but was purchased by the family of the current residents from Wm Z. Hancock circa 1920. Thanks!

I am seeking any information on the Hunter Harris family. Hunter Harris was born in Cedartown, Georgia 1877 and was married to Leila Hull of Athens, Georgia.
Hunter Harris served in World War 1 as an officer in the regular army. After retiring from the army he was employed by the school system of Athens, Georgia. They had two, boys, Hunter and William, who both graduated from West Point in the mid 1930s.
Hunter retired as a Lt. General US Air Force and the other William Major General US Army.

I am looking for obituary information on my uncle Ellsworth (no middle name) Cundiff who lived last in Clarke County (Athens), per his social security information.. My uncle Elic died January 28, 1997. It is possible he had a military funeral service at a military cemetery as he was a lifetime military man and was also a prisoner of WW II. His birth date was March 11, 1917, but I'm not sure which state he was born in. Hi parents had lived Kentucky, Kansas and Oklahoma. His parents were Roy Sharp Cundiff and Agnes May Abercrombie. He had one brother, Robert Ellwood Cundiff and a sister, Thelma Louise nee Cundiff Middlekauff. Uncle Elic married a woman named Ann and they had two children, a boy, Ellsworth Jr., and girl.

Would someone be kind enough to locate the obituary for me? I would be very happy to have the information. Is there a site that you put your ancestor's name and Solomon Ray's name in and it printed only those land transaction records or did you find them on microfilm and if so did you have to look at every land transaction? The reason I ask is I would like to find every land transaction where Solomon ray/Wray was listed as buying or selling land or listed as a witness and also his father George Ray/Wray. Carole, thanks for the reply here on the Charles Strong of Oglethorpe Co., GA. I submitted recently (2003 -July) a supplemental to the NSDAR in DC on my John Thompson, Pvt., VA who served along with his bro-in-law, Charles Strong of VA.
I only recently was able to establish the parentage of John Thompson after several years of searching and clues from the Mary B. Warren of Family Puzzlers fame. She is related also to the Bondurant (Pierre) and the Thompsons/Strong in some manner. I know John Thompson died and left his Will in Clarke Co., GA in 1810 when he died and his widow, Sarah Strong Thompson died in Walton Co., GA. Not sure where John Thompson was buried nor the Charles Strong family. John's father was Richard Thompson of VA and wife, Elizabeth Keys (my husband has Key/s connections also). Can you relate the title of the book in which Charles Strong info was found or was that the name you sent? Oglethorpe Co., GA? I volunteer at the TX. My ancestor was George Ray/Wray who lived in Clarke co Ga from 1801 to possibly 1819. The last record of any kind about George Ray was a land transaction in 1819. He was living in Clarke co Ga. Most Ray researchers believe he died in 1819 in Clarke co Ga. Would you mind looking in your book and seeing if there is a reference to a George Ray about that time. It might list how he died or possibly otehr information. He had a son Solomon Ray who went to Jasper co Ga in 1812 and he died in 1813 in probaly Jasper co Ga. I did not know if your book listed any information about Jasper co Ga. Any entries in the early Clarke co Ga newspaper would be appreicated. Thanks

I have just traced one of my lines back to Daniel Trammell and I have a source which says he was murdered in Clarke County, Georgia in 1814 by Ben Thurmond, his step-son-in-law. Thurmond was married to Mary Brownfield, Daniel Trammell's step-daughter, and was allegedly mismanaging her estate. Would you be willing to look in your book of early newspapers and let me know if that is in there? I only have the one reference to it in one Trammell book.Thanks.

His name was Alonzo Church. His picture and write-up about his tenure at the Univ. of GA (orig. Franklin College) appears on pages 16-41 of "A Pictorial History of The University of Georgia" by F.N. Boney, UGA Press, Athens. Briefly: "A native of Vermont and a graduate of Middlebury College, Alonzo Church moved to the South and married into a planter family. He came to the university to teach mathematics in 1819, and ten years later he assumed the presidency when Waddel resigned. He held the post for thirty years, a school record. etc.etc.", page 16. "An invitation to the president's home for dinner was considered a great coup, but mainly because at any given time at least half of the students fancied themselves in love with one of his beautiful daughters, ELVIRA, Sarah Jane, Lizzie, Julia and Anna. etc.etc.", page 38.

The book should be available in most libraries.

George was married twice, first to Elizabeth Dickenson, second to Milly Brown. George had six childern with each wife. George Jr, Aaron, Peter, Levin, Clemet, Susannah with Elizabeth. Elizabeth, Isaiah, Elijah, Mary, Thomas and Nancy with Milly.
You say that you are decended from George Jr, I am decended from George Jr's brother, Clemet(who moved to Randolph Co).

Obediah Echols did marry the Strong female of the Elder John Strong clan who made their way to VA much later and settled in Hanover, Louisa, Goochland Co., VA areas. “He Cursed His God---Athens, Georgia, August 28: William Haygood, while profaning on Monday at High Shoals declaring there was no God; no Heaven and no----had his tongue paralyzed.
The matter has caused a great sensation in that community.
There is a sequel to the story which came from High Shoals, of William Haygood, who lost his speech while cursing God and religion. After forty-eight hours of numbness his speech has come back.
All day Monday and Tuesday Haygood prayed, asking forgiveness. The crowds at the big revival prayed for him. At last night’s meeting he suddenly rose from his knees and began to talk. The congregation was amazed.
The first words he uttered were a profession of religion. Then he said he had been forgiven his great sin.
The entire community is greatly stirred up over the affair. Haygood says he will devote the rest of his life to preaching the Gospel.”

Thanks for the reply. Obadiah Echols,son of James Echols, did marry into one of the families you are researching. I thought at first Jane Echols who married Solomon Ray in 1796 in Wilkes co Ga was the daughter of James Echols who died in 1825 in Clarke co ga but she was not listed so I guess she was not but maybe she was a cousin. Jane Echols was born about 1779 in possibly NC. When James Echols lived in Wilkes co and Oglethorpe co Ga Solomon Ray lived very close where he lived. James Echol's father was named Richard Echols. Many of Richard Echol's sons lived in Wilkes co-Oglethorpe co Ga in the 1780's and the 1790's. I believe Jane was the daughter of one of Richard Echol's sons but I have not been able to find which one. Thanks, Ross
