I am seeking information about the late Dr. Robert Barclay MCGHEE, who was a researcher at the University of Georgia at Athens in CLARKE county. My interest stems from research I've done on the Barclay MCGHEE family of East Tennessee. I feel confident there is a connection and would be grateful for any assistance in the genealogy of the late Doctor, who was well known for his outstanding work at the University. I do not have dates but he must have passed away decades ago.

Don't know if it means anything but in response to my query for an early Roane Co. marriage for Pollie McGea, one "Bartly McGhee" was a bondsman in an 1802 marriage, don't know whose marriage, that's all I was given. If you've encountered my Pollie (nickname for Mary?) please advise. Martha

Thanks for that information. I believe Bartly (Barclay) McGhee was Polly's father. I don't have any dates for her, but 1802 for her marriage would be about right. Does it say to whom she was married? I'd love to have that information.

My reason for requesting a Roane Co. marriage lookup was to find the marriage of Pollie McGae & Levi Lemmon who are found in the Roane Co. 1830 census. The kind lookup person didn't find such record but did find that one Bartly McGee signed as bondsman for 'an' 1802 marriage but didn't say whose marriage. If you know more about Pollie I'd be interested. Thanks, Martha

Martha, after going over some of my old notes, I have to question my earlier statement (which I now realize was an assumption) about Polly being Barclay's daughter. It just isn't so certain now that I try to find where I got the idea.

Barclay, whose family I remain interested in (and from which I am descended) might have been a bondsman for any number of folks, buthis daughter Polly is said to have married a Lowry, and upon further investigation, I think her approximate age would have to have been a little too young for an 1802 marriage. I'm sorry for giving you misleading information.

Darn it! Best of luck to you, though, and thank you for your note. Wish I could be helpful in return.
