Spring 2013 cemetery tour at Ft. Stewart

The cemetery tour at Ft. Stewart for the spring 2013 has been announced. The data below was approved for me to post to various lists by Patrick Young, so pass the word on to others who may want to attend.
-----------------------
Dear Friends and Council member,

On behalf of the Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield Garrison Commander, Col. Kevin F. Gregory, I cordially invite you to join us for the semiannual Fort Stewart Historic Communities Council meeting and Spring Cemetery visit, 24 April 2013.

During this visit, scheduled stops include Sand Hill, Congregational, Smith Chapel and Smith Cemeteries.

Participants can meet at either the installation’s Pass and Permit Office, building 8093, on Highway 144 (8 to 8:45 a.m.), or at the Liberty County Recreation Area/Hinesville National Guard parking lot on Highway 84 (07:30 to 08:15 a.m.). Buses will be prepositioned at both locations. Both buses link up at the Pass and Permit site, at 0845 before departing. The tour starts at 9 a.m.

Attendees will be afforded the opportunity to dine at an installation dining facility. The lunch cost is $4.60 for adults or $3.80 for youth. Unfortunately the dining facility only accepts cash. Individuals can help expedite by purchasing their lunches before the tour leaves, at the check-in table.

Please dress comfortably. Flat walking shoes are suggested. Participants may also wish to bring a bottle of water and insect repellent. For your conveyance, a Port-a-Potty and hand washing station will be located at one of the cemeteries. In case of inclement weather, the sites may change.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you wish to reserve a space, please call Pat Young, (912) 435-9872 or email him at Patrick.young@us.army.mil.

The marriages are on-line at the Archives with the Secretary of State. I used to have a quick reference URL link to the site and visited it occasionally to browse the images of marriage records of any county (not an index), but my PC was reformatted and I didn't have a record of my quick link icons saved. :-(

I've sent a note to the Archives to send me the link and when they do, I'll notify the list.

Bob

Marriage records were recorded for Chatham beginning in 1733 when the colony was founded, but the state didn't start require them as a public record until 1805.

The State Archives says on their website that "with few exceptions, post 1900 marriage records are not at the Georgia Archives. These records are available from the Probate Judge of the county where the marriage is recorded."

I've been to the probate office in Savannah several times and they do have the records, but the majority of the early records are on microfilm and it's kind of tedious to find them even with an index.

Summary: William and Ann (Nancy) Johnson having three known sons; Moses b. abt 1794, Richard b. abt 1795, and Solomon b. abt 1805. And I am not sure where they came from. Their home was located in Ways Crossing, which was renamed Richmond Hill by the industrialist Henry Ford. Prior to 1793, Ways Station was part of Chatham county. Then prior to 1777, it was part of St. Phillips parish. So between 1777 and 1793, they were in Chatham.

I am currently seeking ANYTHING about them … where they came from their parents, etc.

I am told a records in that area was all burn by Sherman. The more stumbling blocks I run into because of this idiot, the more I hate him.

I am disabled, on a limited income and cannot do Ancestry ($$$), so I am stuck and do not have access to any commercial resources, to make matters worse.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

1840 - Patrick is not listed in the GA census.
1860, 1870 - Honora [b. Ga] is not listed in NY census

1870 - there are 2,224 women named Honora living in NY state & none from Georgia.

sources - ancestry.com [subscription required]

You can find them at http://www.savannahga.gov/cityweb/RLibCat.nsf

The Georgia Archives microfilm holdings contain some Chatham County naturalization records. They are at www.georgiaarchives.org.

Finally, you can email the National Archives in Atlanta. They can be found here: http://www.archives.gov/southeast/holdings/

I hope this helps. My 3great grandfather was naturalized in Superior Court Chatham County in 1866. I think your ancestor's naturalization will be easier to find. Good luck.

Linda

Seek info on John McMichael who was part of Delancy's Brigade during the Revolutionary War and was a Loyalist. He died August 1779. Any info out there on John and his family? Did his family go to Canada?

Ella Proctor/Abraham Mordecai Family

I am looking for the parent's of Ella Proctor who married Abraham Mordecai in 1908 in Savannah, GA. The marriage license has her at 32 years old. The census for 1910 has her at 30 years, 1920 has her at 39 years, and the 1930 census has her at 53. So if we assume she was lying about her age to the census taker (a woman doing that!) :) Then that would make the 1930 census correct at 53.

In 1910 (2 years after marriage) there were 6 kids. The oldest ones I assume were step-children

Edgar Mordecai M 15y
Abram Mordecai M 13y
Clyde Mordecai M 10y
Alice Mordecai F 8y
Byron Mordecai M 4y
Ella Mordecai F 2y

In 1920 child Ella was gone (deceased?) and two more were added

Child Abram N Mordecai M 23y
Child Byron Mordecai M 13y
Child Earl L Mordecai M 9y
Child Gerald W Mordecai M 6y

So Abraham died roughly sometime between 1914-1920. If anybody has any info they would like to share, especially the Proctor part, just reply. THnaks.

I have two brothers, George and Robert Noble who petitioned for 150 and recieved 100 acres of land on the Newport River in what is now Liberty County in 1759.

Would like to know when this land was next sold.

Are there any records for this in Savannah? Will also put a post out in Liberty Co.

I would assume the Ga Archives would take months to do a search.

Is there anyone who could help?

Any help appreicated.

Mae Hamilton Ambrose

Hi Kristine, I knew you when you lived off Walton Way and later when you lived off Tobacco Road. When you were a teenager, I worked with your foster mom, Connie. I am fairly skilled in doing family history research. A number of years ago, I helped a friend who had been adopted connect with his bio-parents. Maybe I can help you...
