In the 1850 and 1860 slave census, is:
1850: John R Chevers, District 13, Chatham County, Georgia
1860: J R Chivers Ogeechee, Chatham, Georgia
He owned MANY slaves. Tax records at Ancestry show why; he owned in excess of a thousand acres of land, and he was a wealthy man. The land and the slaves were worth oodles.
But he is not found in Chatham County in the 1850 or 1860 regular census. I cna't find anything else about him.
I'd like to know to begin with where was District 13/ Ogeechee. I found the Ogeechee River, it does not say, Ogeechee River, it says, Ogeechee.
I'm thinking to start with deeds, but neither online deeds search I can find has a thing about him! How do you have over a thousand acres without ever buying land, and then vanish without selling it.
Where else would I find information?
I can't find a single Chatham County historical society, and that doesn't seem possible? I think I found Savannah, but that's not Chatham County, or, if it is, it isn't clear.
