Hi Folks,

Attached are a series of six image files in JPEG format. These represent the "Georgia Declaration of Independence of Great Britain and Oath of Allegiance to the State of Georgia.

This document appears to originate from 1782 or '83 and contains a listing of signatories to the 'Oath' numbering 180 individuals. Many of these individuals are recognizably persons from Savannah and surrounding Chatham County. Notable is the simple fact that many of those who signed were of German or Swiss ancestry. There do no appear to be any signatories from the Georgia State government or those who served in the Patriot / Whig cause during the Revolutionary War (except perhaps for John Clarke, who was from New Windsor in SC, near Augusta - he was a RS, but also he was the brother-in-law of the listed Ulrich Tobler).

Anyhow, I hope that these files and the information contained in them prove to be useful. The original four panel silk document is stored in the manuscript collections of the University of Georgia libraries. Savannah native and my cousin B. E. Mulligan searched and had UGA library staff prepare a PDF document from the original. I've copied off JPEG imagery from the PDF to make it available via this venue (where PDF files aren't supported).

Hi Folks,

This is the second JPEG image file of the silk document from 1782 / 83 Chatham County, following departure of Great Britain's forces from Georgia.

Hi Folks,

These two JPEG files provide typewritten and printed transcriptions of the original document and signatures from pages 1 & 2.

Hi Folks,

Pages three and four of the silk document transcribed into a print format. These are purely signatures.

Surnames: HARRIS
Dear Dale,

First let me say thank you for posting these documents...it is wonderful to be able to view them....

I do need to note a correction for the typed version of the document. Page 4, the first name is actually Wm. HARRIS. not Wm. Harigan which appears in the next column.

We believe this to Wm. Harris who was originally found in early Georgia records in Glynn Co. specifically St. Simons Island. He originally supported the crown but had a change of position and then supported the Revolution. Some of his children remained loyal to the crown, but some, like their father ended up supporting the Revolution.

Again thank you,

Deborah
