Kingston Confederate Hospital

My great-great grandfather Allen Phillips died in the Confederate Hospital at Kingston according to his military records. I have not been able to find the place of his burial. I am looking for resources that may have information about what was done with the bodies of the dead from that hospital. I am aware that there is a section of mostly un-named confederate graves in the city cemetery at Kingston but I can find very little information about this small group of graves. The little museum in Kingston was not able to help me with my questions. I would appreciate suggestions. I can supply a few more details if needed.

We recently visited the grave of John Neeves Peace who is buried at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and realized that the head stone appears to be newer than 1902 when he was buried. He is my husbands 2nd great grandfather. John had 6 children and was wondering if any descendants are still living in the Adairsville area that we could exchange information with.
Nancy

Hi kjassen (sorry--don't know your name!)--

I'm very pleased to hear from you; since corresponding with Cousin Lizzabel back in the 1970's, I've not been able to make contact with anyone else among the Georgia descendants of Robert Creswell SAXON and his brothers John Francis Wolff SAXON, George W. SAXON, and Lewis SAXON. My wife's grt-grandmother was Nancy Para SAXON, da. of J.F.W. SAXON. She married Selden Hemphill MOORE and removed to Dallas Co., AL, where she died. I would love to have a copy of your photo of your grandmother's grave marker, if it won't be much trouble to send it (my email address is ronhead@knology.net). Please email me--I would like to start corresponding with you about our mutual SAXON family.

Best regards,
Ron Head (Montgomery, AL)
Trustee and past President, Montgomery Genealogical
Society

Hi ron head - this query of yours is very old, but if you are still looking, I have a camera-phone photo I can txt to you of Bonnie Kate Saxon Platt's grave marker in a different part of GA (she was my grandmother).

I have been to the graves of some of the others you mention but cannot recall the name of the very small, very remote cemetery they were in. Somewhere in the general area of Calhoun, GA.

The cousin marriage you mention is that of Bonnie Kate's parents. It makes for convoluted family-tree diagrams and confuses family tree software !!!

Wow! Thank you so much for the info! My ggrandmother's name was also Arathusa but she told everyone it was Angela. She must not have liked that name! The only way I found her real name was by the hand written census. This is awesome because we always heard that Laughing Gal cemetery was named such because a man caught his wife cheating and she laughed at him and he killed her and at midnight on that particular night she comes out and you could hear her laughing! Legends! Have you ever been to that area? It is down in what used to be known as Old Macedonia just across the Bartow/Cherokee line.

After a little more digging I have come up with the following guesses:
1. Arathusa was previously married
2. Mary and Margaret were from thar marriage.
3. Arathusa married Andrew Jackson in 1850.
4. Andrew Jackson's father Jacob Stroup (b 1771) owned the Laughing Gal tavern. At least the property it was on. He may have rented it to Laughing Gal.
5. Shortly after they married they moved to Illinois with Andrew's brother Jacob Decatur Stroup.
6. Andrew fought for the Union in the Civil War.
Mike

Is there a way to get a copy of this book? I have recently found out that my husband's family was living in that town at the same time as mine. We met many years later thousands of miles apart, through an interractive service before the Internet took off. That kind of makes our heads spin. It is indeed a very small world :) I have many people to look up and would love a copy of this book if you would care to share the title. Thank you.

I am looking for information on Bell Dewberry who married Benjamin "Ben" Barrett. I am trying to find more information on Bell's brother sisters and parents. So far I have found her in the 1930 and 1940 Hall County, Georgia census. Bell could be short for another name such as Isabella. Not not known at this time. I found NO Dewberry's in the 1930 census Hall County, Georgia and only 1 in 1940, in which I believe might very well be Bell's mother. Not yet proven.
1940 census reads
Ben Barrett age 53
Bell 39
Ernest 18
Arthur 17
Clarence 16 *** my lineage Charles Thomas Barrett
Herman 6
* note 1930 listed two younger children that are now not in the 1940 census record. They were Julian whom was 3 in 1930, and Mozell 9 months in 1930.

The only Dewberry in Hall County, Georgia listed the following :
1940 Hall County, Georgia
Mary Ella Dewberry born abt 1869 widow
Briela ? Jane Dewberry born @ 1906 daug
Oder N. Dewberry born @ 1902 son
Nora Dewberry abt 1910 wife of son
Imogene Dewberry born @ 1931 reads daug but believe is Oder and Nora's daug
then Oder Jr. born 1934 listed as son
Clara Mae Bewberry born 1936
Eugene born 1939.

If you can help me with any of these names or further information please contact me at deborahgarrett966@msn.com or via facebook Deborah Jones Garrett.
I have several watercolor paintings signed Anne M. Mays and they bear dates from 1907 to 1915. They were purchased from a Walton family in College Park, Ga., and while I can't recall the exact relationship, I was told the artist was from Cartersville. In the same group are two family photos, one of a child, Mary Elizabeth Walton, who was born in 1913 (her age is stated to be 8 months 7 days) and a couple who might possibly be her parents. They both have the impressed name of the photographer, J. A. Morris, Cartersville. I would love to return the personal photos to a decendant.
In the book (first edition), The History of Euharlee, there is a page of information about the Henry Yarborough/Yarbrough family. The Yarboroughs were early Cass County pioneers (Henry & Agnes). Both born about 1785 in SC and migrated to Georgia betwen 1825 and 1840. Henry died in in 1857 and Agnes about 1860. They lived at Stilesboro, Georgia. Not much specific information about George Y, although there's a pciture of him as well as a picture of a brother, John J. Yarbrough and some of his family members. Among the family of the brother, John, is a Yarbrough with the same name as my great-grandfather (who came to Bartow County from Laurens County, SC.)

Hi Gail,
I am trying to find information on an artist named HC Pitts. My father's second wife was a Pitts and was originally from Ohio I believe. Her family also lived in Indiana. She and my father lived in Rushville and Richmond, IN. I have three original oils of HC Pitts and do not know anything about the artist. I am assuming he or she was a relative of my step mother. I went to the art museum in Richmond, IN and they are wanting to know more about this artist. They have 2 or 3 small paintings. Any info would help.
Thanks,
Chris

Since my first posting in 2000, I have found more information about William Goodwin.
His middle name was Linton after his mother’s maiden name.
His parents were Nicodemus Goodwin and Harriet Linton Goodwin.
He was born near Westminster in Baltimore County, Maryland, April 18, 1830.
He married Mahala South on January 25, 1857, in Cassville, Bartow County, GA.
The family appears on the 1870 Census living in Cartersville; on the 1880 Census living in Huntsville, Alabama; the 1900 Census living in Cartersville; and on the 1910 his widow and some of the children are still living in Cartersville.
He died October 29, 1903 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cartersville in Bartow County. There is a “Find A Grave” memorial # 36206389.
Mary (1855-1944) and William (1849-1929) were my great grandparents. The story Mary told my mom and her sibs is that when the Yankees were marching through GA they found Mary and a brother - their parents were dead or dying of cholera - and found an "uncle" named Tom Chitwood in Chattanooga and he came and took them to TN. I can't find her parents anywhere - nor can I find a Tom Chitwood. The only hint I have is her death certificate names her father as J A Spence. I know that the Knight, Spence, and Chitwood families are big in that part of the state. Any clues out there?
Those names are not familiar. The last Johnson I followed from the Lindsey Johnson descendancy, not a direct ancester of my wife, was a Civil War Lt. Col. who lived in/near Kingston. Lindsey's son, John A Johnson, my wife's ancester, settled just over the county line in Floyd County and established a homestead on the river. Most of John A's immediate family settled around Rome. If you are close to Cartersville, a check with the local Genealogical Society will be an eye opener.

Their oldest son Robert Alexander was born ca 9/1848, but I have not found him in 1850 either.

The only son I have for Joseph is Gordon. But, I haven't tried to find him after the 1920 census.

Her name was Clyde Dysart, sisters Bess, Catherine and brother Frank. I am currently researching the IRon works, and ran across our inquiry. The Bartow History Center has a wealth of information about the area, as well as a really helpful RED book that may have what you are looking for in it. Also, the genealogy lady at the courthouse - Linda I think, is most helpful. She has lived here forever, and knows everyone's family.

So he married a Malinda but his mothers name was also Malinda. I don't have any clue what Reed she married or her maiden name. His mother was born in 1812. In the 1850 census she was 38 and married to a Griswold. There was also an Andrew reed in the home as well. I've found nothing on him yet.

My ggg grandfather was inGeorgia until the civil war. A few weeks after the civil war ended he married my ggg gma in Indiana. She married a Johnson S. Griswold. And according to that census there was a small child with the last name Griswold but all of the other children in the home were Reed's. I wish to find a marraige record for Malinda and Johnson Griswold, but would also like to find any records of Malinda being married to a man by the last name of Reed.
Jill, I don't know if I replied to you, or if I even saw the posting. Hope the address is still good.

Asa and Margaret and family were on the 1850 Cass Co. GA census. They moved to Texas and he is on the 1860 Angelina Co. TX census (listed as Amos T.) They are in Panola Co. TX in 1870 and Gregg Co. TX in 1880. Asa died in Gregg Co. in 1893. I don't know where or when Margaret died, but it was between 1880 and 1891.
Christine, Texas
boardlistch@wmconnect.com

What information do you have on this family line in the 1800's? I have who I believe was a brother to my gggrandfather Benjamin F. Patterson b.abt. 1820. Benjamin lived in Union County, SC in 1850. William b.abt 1827 lived next door to him and moved to Bartow by the 1870 census.
Would like to connect with a male Patterson from that line willing to have their DNA checked at FamilyTreeDNA. I've had mine done to 67 markers and it would help to find common ancestors.
Dean Patterson deanpatterson@comporium.net
