No, mine is Jessie I. Butler (aka Jake) 1795-1908, father of at least 7, with Eliza (1830) being of his first wife and William (Bill) Malasha (sp?)(1832-1900) being of his second wife, Adline Moniac. They were married at the home of her father, Samuel Moniac 27 Nov 1836, Baldwin Co., AL.

Now that I look at it, Eliza is not in my direct line, as she was of the first wife and I am in the line of the 2nd wife.

Sorry. However, yes. Bill was born in Decatur, GA, so you may have a connection somewhere.
Are you referring to a male Jesse Butler, and if so... specifically the one that lived in Gadsden County, in Florida, about 1850+ to 1870+, Baker County, Georgia before that, and Decatur County, Georgia after that?

Soon, 2015, there will be a new wealth of online historical database information in time for St. Augustine's 450-year anniversary which occurs in 2015. St. Augustine's colonial history dates back to the 16th century and many of its historical documents will be digitized by the University of Florida's George Smathers libraries.
I believe he settled there ca. 1839-1840. The Presbyterian church his daughter-in law's father (Sam'l Perry) and his 2nd wife's 1st husband (Rev. Alexander) started was formed in Madison Co. before 1840. JCP married the daughter-in-law's father's sister who was widowed, in Apr.1839--I think in Madison, tho' both were from So.Car. JCP is my ggg grandfather. I'm sort of working recently on JCP's 1st wife's (Eliz. Palmer's) mother, Sarah Morgan, from Bermuda--but not making much headway. The only verified dates I have for JCP are War of 1812, Edisto, SC, living Edisto 1815/16; and census 1850, Madison, FL (farmer). He was said to have been a sea captain before moving to Fla--I have no proof yet. Also of interest--there is a historic church on Edisto built by a Robt. Pillans at the time they lived there 1812-1839; Robert is JCP's father's name. Happy hunting! Delina Jenkins Caldwell

I'm looking for (proof) of my last link for a Florida Pioneer -- name James Tarpley Hooker (dob 1804, dod 1836) serviced (and died due to wounds) in the 2nd Seminole War. Married Racheal Prevett in 1828; and married Sara Ann Pearce in 1833, Columbia County, FL. Had two daughters with Racheal (Elizabeth and Caroline); and three sons with Sara (William Pearce, James Wesley, and Stephen John Levi Hooker).

I was passed down research notes saying "In 1844 Eliz. B. and Caroline Matilda were made wards of grandfather James D. Prevat", though I am unsure where this information came from.

The 1850 census all three boys are still with Sara.
I need to proof James Wesley is a son of James Tarpley for the Florida Pioneer program. I have been looking for Probate records but have been unlucky so far in my search.

Any help &/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I live in North Florida in an area where the Spanish Franciscans established missions among the Indians in the early days of La Florida. The missions were attacked by the British with the Creek Indians in 1704 and many of our priests and Apalachee Indians and Spanish soldiers were killed. We are trying to gather information about the ones we have names for. One was soldier with the Spanish, and his name was Balthazar Francisco. He was from Tenerife, of the region of Los Silos, and had been more than 14 years with the garrison in Apalachee, so he had been in La Florida since at least about 1690 -- possibly earlier. Here is the little we know of him. It would be wonderful if you could help fill in a few gaps. Thank you for whatever help you can give and for your willingness to help.
Heather Jordan
Chattahoochee, Florida

Balthazar Francisco, native of the Canary Islands:
He was from the Island of Tenerife, of the region of Los Silos, and had been more than 14 years with the garrison in Apalachee. “Immediately following his capture, they cut out his tongue and eyes, cut off his ears, scalped him, and put a crown on him, which in Indian style is placed on the Indian warriors when they dance, and which they call tascayas. And they tied him to another cross, and slashed him all over and placed burning splinters in the wounds; and as soon as they set him afire, they mocked and insulted him, laughing on hearing what the said Balthazar Francisco told the pagans in the Spanish and Apalachian languages, [while] he called on the Most Holy Virgin to help him, for she would carry him to God with much pleasure from knowing that he would go to enjoy his holy glory. There were related many other things which the Indian prisoners who escaped state they had heard from the said Balthazar Francisco until he died. And after the departure of the enemy, the witness and other soldiers went to search the locality and found the Crosses of Calvary tied to the aforesaid and fallen to their feet.” (Here They Once Stood, p. 76)

Tuckers in Alachua/Marion Counties

I am trying to determine the parents of Jane Caroline Tucker (m. John Goskie in 1846 in Marion County). She was born in Florida about 1820. I believe that Margaret Tucker (m. William Owen Simmons) and Louisa Tucker (m. Nathaniel Ellis) may be her sisters. At the time of the 1850 Census, all three sisters were living near each other in that part of Alachua County that became Marion County. In 1860, Margaret and her husband were still at the original location. Jane and her family had removed to Ocala, Marion County. Louisa Tucker Ellis was living with Jane's family. By 1870, the Goskies had removed to Illinois and Missouri. I believe that Jane is probably descended from Willoughby Tucker of Georgia, although I can't pinpoint her descent. All Census records say that she was born in Florida; Willoughby's sons were among the first to move into Florida from Georgia, settling there while the area was still in Spanish hands. If Margaret, Louisa, or Jane could be connected to a parent I believe this would help complete the line of descent. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for information on John Bembry born about 1794 in NC, moved to Leon County 1820-1830, died in or moved away from Leon County between 1830 and 1840. He had a wife and about 6 children that I cannot find on later censuses, though three of them were boys. I believe one of the daughters was named Frances Martha and she married William Bryan in 1830.

There is some reason to think that John was wanted for murder of a Littleton Bryan, but I do not have the full story on that. It is possible that, if this is true, his family moved away, but I can't find them living anywhere else in 1840, either.

John's brother, Kenneth Bembry, was a big Leon County landowner who died in 1854.

Any information would be most welcome!

am still looking for any info on my grandfathers family. I know that Charlie Berry, his wife Fannie (Fergurson) Berry, and there children Eva, Annie, Mattie(macintosh) Berry, Horace and Henry , were all living in Smithville, Hamilton county, around 1900 until Charlie died about 1920. His family moved to Oneco, FL. (which is I believe is manatee county now)exept for Annie, and Mattie. Does anyone recognize any of these names?

Does anyone have information on the Bradenton area before the town was renamed for the Braden family in the 1800's? I remember reading that there was a braiding mill there, and that the town was originally named Braiding Town, then renamed Bradenton. Obviously, there must have been some sort of industry there for the Braden family to have built a mansion and so many people to have lived there before it was renamed. I know there are secessionists buried there, so that would put it as being settled around the time of the Revolution.

Only the son lived to adulthood (as far as I know) They were in Leon County. She died in 1860 as a result of complications of childbirth.
Jean, I take it that you have a Loyalist in your family. One of my husband's great-grandfathers, born 1748 in Raloo, Larne, Northern Ireland, had migrated to this country and was a Lt. Col in the Georgia Militia. Naturally, he fought for the Brits.

After the War, he returned to Northern Ireland to petition for the land he had lost but he apparently was not completely successful in his endeavor because he instead returned to South Carolina by 1802 and had decided that he wanted to be a part of this country. He received a pension from the British Government that came by ship at the prescribed time.

You might look for that sort of thing as well as see if he was listed as a resident alien during the War of 1812 as his relative was. We could tell the time departed, the time he was there, as well as the time he returned due to land. The departure showed the children born in Georgia; the time in Ireland listed two of the children being born in Ireland; the ship registered his pension being delivered to Kershaw County, SC by 1802.

Hope that gives you some idea of things to look for.

You might Panton & Leslie, a company with strong loyalist claims. The Spanish records are good but there are other sources as well. The Spanish records, at least part of them, can be found at the Florida Archives; the Archives are online.

Hi Martha,
I was so excited to read this posting from you. I am searching for records concerning my ancestor, Musco Wright, who was with the First Battallion of Pennsylvania Loyalists with the British at Pensacola, Florida during most of the Revolutionary War. He survived the Battle at Pensacola and was sent on parole to Long Island, New York until the war officially ended, and then he went to Canada.
During the war, he married and had children, and they were believed to have followed him to Pensacola. Canadian records were sketchy at best about him. I am trying to locate possibly a marriage record for him and birth or baptism records for his children, if they exist, in Pensacola. This was during the time when the British were in control of the area.
If I understand you correctly, these records if they do exist, can be found in St. Augustine, Florida? Can you give me any contact information for them? Your help would be very much appreciated.
Jean Mayo
jeanmayo@comcast.net

There are several versions of the 1783 Spanish census (for example: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/fl/statewide/census/178...)

This census includes a number of non-Spanish settlers who chose to stay in Florida when it was returned to Spain.
