I am descended from William R. Bush and his wife Eliza Jones. They settled in Madison County c1847. Eliza's father, Ariel Jones also came with them from Alabama. There are many descendants still in the area. I would love to exchange information with anyone interested and am particularly always looking for old photographs. Happy to share.

Mitchel Drew was my great grandmothers Cora Drew Herring's uncle. He gave her a piece of farmland for about $10.00. My grandmother, Josie Herring French, (Coras daughter) named her son Mitchel after him, who in turn named his son Mitchel, I also named my son Mitchel and my son named his son Mitchel. It is so interesting how the names are passed down. And I really enjoy being able to tell my grandson where is name originated.

Parnel-Farnell DREW – you will find him named Parnel, Farnel, Farnal, Fernel, – so it’s anyone’s guess as to his correct spelling. He was born in Georgia 07 Jun 1805, but I do not know where. Sarah GRAY was born in Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia 28 May 1811.

Farnell & Sarah GRAY were actually married in Jefferson County, Florida on November 19, 1928 so they did not arrive in Florida as husband and wife but did arrive prior to 1834. My husband is a DREW, and his father was James Luther DREW, grandfather, Thomas Edward DREW, Great Grandfather James DREW and great-great grandfather would be Farnell DREW. We personally saw the documentation of Farnell & Sarah’ marriage in Jeffereson County.

Their children included, a firstborn child who did not survive (have no name), then Benjamin R DREW (1834-1879), Thomas F DREW (1836-1902), James E DREW (1838-1926), Joel M DREW (1840-1962 – killed in Civil War), William B DREW, (1842- ), Sarah Elizabeth DREW (1844-1925), and Columbus Mitchell DREW (1846-1927).

Mitchell Nebraska DREW (1868-1903) is not the son of Farnell & Sarah – he is the son of Benjamin R DREW and Sarah E STEWART DREW (Benjamin being the son of Farnell & Sarah GRAY DREW). Mitchell Nebraska DREW married Mary Eulalia VANN and they had a son they named Mitchell Nebraska DREW (would be Jr.)

Please feel free to email if you would like to correspond – I would be interested to know your relationship in the DREW family – always interesting to find distant relatives.
Thank you Joyce,

I am familiar with Fold 3 and am a member of their free info. I have not joined the paid access. I was considering that yesterday to get Elijah's service record. I have been looking at Madison County and there was another William that enlisted in the civil war and ended up at a later date in Thomas County, Ga where Unity and her family were. Not sure if there is a relation, but assume somewhere there is because as you stated they all were with the 14 heads.

I also have checked with LDS and discovered the volunteer site. I hadn't been there in awhile and like the new format. I need to remember to check with them more often. I also was thinking about spending some time transcribing. I would like to hopefully give back to those who have helped me in the past by posting free information.

This William (also a William B) that was in Madison County for the War was married in 1856 to Missouri Mc Fail. They moved around, Brooks Co, Ga, to Madison Co. back to Brooks then Thomas. When they were in Madison Co in 1870, William was living next to Margaret Drew. Imagine she could be his mother, but not sure who she was married to.

I also located a Josiah Drew that was in Thomas County in 1850 when Elijah and Unity first married. He also died in the war.

The Elijah I am researching was in 11th Fl Co G and died 9/3/1864 of measles in Petersburg, VA.

Thanks for your great responses!

Amy G

Also, have you used the familysearch.org site? They are adding new things all the time. I volunteered and did some indexing myself to help the cause along.
Hi Amy, you have done great research. I think sometimes when we regurgitate information we see things from a new perspective.
Have you tried looking at footnote.com? they have military stuff and that is where Joel Drew's info came from. I have down that Farnall was the maiden name of his mother.

Here is a cut and paste from my notes "From Mitchell Drew's notes....His grandfather, W. B. Drew, was a native of North Carolina, where the family had been settled since the Colonial period. In North Carolina the family increased to such an extent that in 1790 there were fourteen heads of Drew families."

Do you have this? Where do you live? I am in TX.
Thank you for your response!! Yes, I have checked all records that I can think of. Everything on Ancestry, LDS, etc. Elijah also died in the Civil War. So many from the South were lost. Both of my ancestors also. My Minch Gray, his brother John and his brother in law all went from Thomas County, Ga to Monticello Jefferson Co, Fl to enlist instead of serving their county/state.

I have located Elijah's wife Unity's civil war pension record and her DC. No mention of family there. I am in the process of finding his enlistment info, that may provide a lead. It appears that my side, the Gray's, have a family of "unmentioneds" why not him too? I actually just discovered Unity. We didn't even know she existed until a couple of months ago. There she was next to her parents in the 1870 census all this time. Until the discovery, we thought that my ancestor, Minch Gray was the oldest in the family. Unity left Madison County and went back to Thomas County Ga after Elijah died and her family grew up there.

It's hard for me to research the area living across the country. I am considering a trip out there to try and break down the wall. Just don't know where else to turn. If they both were in Jefferson County or at least had family there, it would make sense to me that is how they met. I have several feelers out trying to check some church records, but so far all I can find are things that can make them fit, but nothing to prove it.

I take it that the Asa and Jeremiah also listed in the 1830 census in Jefferson County along with Farnel are brothers and they are all children of the Margrete that is listed there also. "Farnal" as it was spelled there had 1 f child at the time, no sons. In 1840 Madison Co, he has a son aged 5 - 9 and 3 under 5. The age of Elijah in 1850 is 22, but in 1860 he is recorded as 28. He could fit Farnel's 1840 census if the 1860 age is correct, but it shows that he also could be a son of the other two if the 1850 has his correct age. Thinking about it, Elijah and Unity married in 1849, so being aged 21 at marriage which I believe was the legal age then leads more to being a nephew than a son, doesn't it? The older son of Farnel's 1840 census was probably your Joel.

Elijah could be a son of either Asa or Jeremiah also. Jeremiah Drew is living a few places away from John Gray who I suspect is the John Gray I am seeking and Unity's father. John Gray moved his family to Thomas Co., Ga by 1840. I don't know why it never sunk in to us that there was a female aged 10 -15 in there in the census.

Jeremiah Drew is next to Edmund Gray who is the father of Sarah Gray, Farnell's wife. I think my John Gray is related to Edmund, but is either an unmentioned son or is a nephew that followed him down from Burke County. I just can not place them all without doubt. I do know that John and his wife Devinia while born in GA, lived in Florida c 1830's. Somewhere in the vicinity of Tallahassee if a letter I have a copy of is correct.

Please do keep me in mind in your searches. I would deeply appreciate it. Hopefully finding Unity will be the link that we need to pull this all together and finally break down our brick wall.

Thank you so much for your input. Any advise will be welcome. You can always contact me by email at smiley0222@socal.rr.com

Amy G.

Hello! I read everything and anything. I don't have him recorded, you are right about that. Of course there is no mention of son, Joel, either until his mother gets custody of his daughter Josephine after he is killed during Civil War.

Before that everyone thought Josephine was the daughter of her grandparents.

Can't find anything more on Joel or his wife, marriage or when his daughter was born.

Have you looked at war records? Death records on familysearch.org? They always are adding as you probably know. I will keep my eyes open for Elijah.

I don't know if anyone reads these posts any longer, but does anyone know how Elijah Drew of Madison Co. 1850 and 1860 related to Farnel? I think he could have been a son or a nephew, but no one seems to have him recorded. He married Unity Kate Gray in Thomas Co., Ga. 1849

Looking for information on W.J.R. (Riley) Walker, son of Lenard H. & Elizabeth Walker. In 1850 they were in Barnwell Co SC & 1860 in Madison Co FL, in 1870 in Duval Co, FL. WJR Walker served in the Confederacy from Florida and by 1870 (or perhaps earlier) seems to have died. There is a marriage in 1862 in Madison Co between Miley A. Parnell and W.T. (misreading of J. to T?) Walker. They may have had a son Frankie who died in early childhood. Millie m2.W.D. Scarborough.

The siblings I find for Riley Walker are: Madora, Mary, Augustus, Mat D. (sometimes given as Daniel M.), John, Eliza, William, George.

I found a marriage for a H. Madora Walker first to a B.F. Buchanan in 1863 Madison Co and then Madora Buchanan to a William King in 1866 in Madison Co. Assume she was the same as the daughter of Lenard & Elizabeth, sister to Riley but have not confirmed it.

I would be interested to hear from any descendants of Lenard & Elizabeth Walker to see what they know of this family group.

Believe this Nathaniel C. (Cooper) married a Frances Hampton of Jefferson County about 1870/75. Further, believe this marriage produced the following off-springs; Will, Ike,Elizabeth (Lizzie) and perhaps others. Any info appreciated, especially on Sady or Nathaniel Cooper. Thanks.
