I am in desparate need of assistance from someone in the Walton County, Florida area. I am seeking information on Charles Higgs. I am trying to establish a connection between him and my gg-grandfather, Green Berry Brown Higgs. Family oral history says that when Green was a small child something happened with his parents (possibly a divorce). As a result, Green was raised by his grandparents (names unknown). I have been able to trace Green through Census Records to Covington, Alabama in 1860. I also know that he married Martha Annas E. Wilson in 1858 in Pike County, Alabama. In 1860, Green listed his age as 32 and his place of birth as Florida. Martha, his wife, had a brother named John. John married Melinda Granger in Pike County about 1857 and subsequently moved to the Euchee Valley area of Walton County, Florida. John died there and is buried in the Euchee Valley Cemetary. If Green was indeed raised by his grandparents, it must have been his maternal grandparents because I can't find any other Higgs in the area except Charles and he is listed as being only 30 - 40 years of age in the 1840 Census record for Dale County, Alabama. I also found tax and voter records for a Charles Higgs in Walton County, Florida between 1845 and 1847. Furthermore, I have discovered that there were a number of Browns living in Walton County during this time frame including George Brown who is recorded as owning land in the Euchee Valley area in 1842. I have a theory that Green's mother was a Brown and that Martha and Green met thru John when he moved to the Euchee Valley area. As you can see, I have a lot of circumstantial evidence but no proof. Please!!! Can anyone help me close this loop and solve a big family puzzle? Thanks in advance. Tony
