Hi, I have a Nancy Jane Crawford Gamble in my family. She was born in 1826, died in 1868. Her parents were John Gamble born in 1800, and Nancy born in 1812. Do not know if this will help or not.

Hi Cecelia,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is the same family John was my GGGG grandfather. His son, David was my GGG grandfather. Nancy Jane was, of course, his sister. I have traced back as far as John and can't find anymore info on him. I know a little more a Nancy Jane if you are interested. There is a book on John Gamble traced back through Nancy Jane in our local Historical Society. It cover mostly the Gunter side of her family. It only mentions John and Nancy as her parents. Which side of the family are you on, Gamble or Gunter

Hi!!!! This is too cool, you and I are probably related. I am on the Gunter side of the family. Thomas Leroy Gunter, Sr. is my GGG grandfather. He was married 3 times.
I too am having problems with finding where the family originated from. They apparantly came from Escambia County and migrated to Taylor County. Also, they apparently had ties to Alabama and to South Carolina. According to family history that has been handed down, they moved from Escambia County to Taylor County to escape the plague, did real well as far as I am concerned, homesteaded property, the indians visited one of my grandfathers, and I do believe it is Thomas Leroy Gunter, Jr. he had a wet nurse after his wife died during or shortly after childbirth. There is not much that I can tell you, except our family was strong. I wish I knew more. We also have ties to a Cherokee lady, all I know is that my Pa (my great-grandfather) was my hero. If our Gambles are related, and it seems like they were, look at John and Nancy Gamble from South Carolina in 1800. He was born in 1800, she was born in 1812. I cannot get any more info than this. Sorry if this sounds confusing to you,
it is confusing to me also.

One other thing, back then it was a shame for a white man to have been to an Indian. My GGGG grandfather hid that fact.
Her name was Shi- Ni- Go- li. Apparently she was Cherokee.

Hey Again,
This is great! Here's my history. I know that John Gamble was born in South Carolina, not sure exactly where. At that time he was in South Carolina. He had 3 children, Nancy Jane 1826, Jobe 1827??, David F. 1830. These dates are different in every place you look. Then they must have moved South. They are listed in the 1850 census for Jefferson Co. Florida where there are 2 more children, Sarah 1839 and Mary 1842. 1860 in Taylor County census in the Pretty pond area where my family still resides today. I have a map of the area from 1880's and 1935. There is a couple of pieces of property next to Gambles that was deeded to a Gunter in 1880's. There are still Gunters in the area. Some are good friends of mine. There is a book in the Taylor County Historical society called "Descendants of John Gamble" it traces the Nancy Crawford Gamble Gunter side of the family right down to present day. Someone put a lot of work into this book but I can't find out who wrote it. I'm sure there is so much more to share. You can email me at rainey@gtocm.net if you would like to.

Oh, I almost forgot. If you didn't already know, Nancy Crawford Jane is buried in Jefferson County Florida but I'm not sure where. My David F. is bureid at New Hope Cemetary in Taylor County. Do you still have connections to Taylor County? There is another book that is also on the web called "Day book of John R. Kelley". It gives a lot of interesting info about Taylor County, New Hope Church, store accounts, Sunday school classes w names, etc. Very interesting and also the story of the "Florida's Flaming Six Guns" a story about cattle wars in Taylor Co that is supposed to be based on fact. I'm not sure about that.

The cattle wars did happen according to my mother. Joby was born October 04, 1857. I am a descendent of Thomas Leroy Gunter. Yes, I still have very many ties to Perry, Fla.
According to my mother, our family moved from Escambia County to Taylor County in the 1840's to escape the plague,
they homesteaded property in Taylor. They may also moved to escape a murder of some sort......Someone killed someone..........don't know, wasn't there. Anyways, from what I know, Nancy Jane Crawford Gamble was married to one of my great grandfathers on my mothers side, they had several children, Thomas Leroy Gunter, Jr.,
Jincy Lucinda Gunter, Aurelia Ann Gunter, Derinda Martha Gunter, Sarah Henrietta Gunter, Charlotte Mahalia Gunter,
Joby Johnson Gunter, and Dillen Jordan Gunter. The place I remember most is on Beach Road, Pa (my great grandfather,my hero), would sit in his chair on the front porch.
Pa was a great man. A big man. I never knew his son, my biological grandfather, I have pictures, but he killed himself when my mom was about 3 months pregnant with me. His name was John Charles Gunter. Also, according to my mother when she was growing up on the same property that I remember while I also was growing up, the Indians came and visited, usually staying the night. Also, one other thing comes to mind, back then it was a shame to have an Indian wife, but, with all the traces we have done, it does point back one, and back then white men would give their Indian wife a white lady's name. Her name was Ghi-Go-Ne-Li. Cherokee.
Also, look at the names of Kinsey, and Sadler. Yes, my family goes back in Taylor County. I'm very proud of my heritage. My Nancy Jane Crawford Gamble who was married to Thomas Leroy Gunter in 1843, was born 03/29/1825,
she died 01/18/1868 in Boggy, Escambia, Fl. The info I have is that she was buried in Boggy. Most of my immediate family are buried at New Hope Cemetary, I hope to be buried there someday. If you want any help on the the sites there let me know, Pa is buried there. CC

Hey "cousin",
You have told me some things I didn't know. Different census' give different dates on some of them. It's hard to know. It's wonderful that your mom could give you so much personal info. I didn't become interested in this until after my granfather had passed away, so much of it was lost. His name was also David. I guess he was named after his great granfather. Yes, my family still lives on beach rd and so do the Gunter's. My best friend in high school is a Gunter. She lives about 2 miles from my family. Look us up sometime, we would love to meet you

Oddly enough, my great granmother on my Granma Gamble's side was a Sadler. Her name was Lela Sadler McKinney. Also my mother's family ties in with the Sadlers somewhere in the past. They say all original Taylor Countians are related somewhere (ha,ha).

Have a great day,
LeAnn
