Sorry I didn't make it clear. I'm interested in knowing how they were treated by the staff. There is an old story that the students were treated badly by the staff - Gertrude Anhorn mainly - they were made to work in the fields and didn't get much of an education. I would like to verify or disprove this story.

thanks,
julie

Mary Evelyn (Eva) Pitts married Henry Clay Meeks in Jones County GA. They lived on a farm in Morgan County GA and had two sons. He disappears sometime after 1910 and she shows up in the 1916 St Augustine city directory with the children and no mention of a husband. As early as 1918 she is listed as widowed. However, I did find one later record that listed her as divorced. Anybody know where to find divorce records dating before 1920? I think she would have filed in St Augustine sometime between 1910 and 1918. Thanks, these are my great grandparents and I'd really like to know what happened to him.

I think it was a misprint and it should be Pellicer. My aunt said she had married a Pellicer. Hope some one will be able to help me with this family.
Parkhill Family

My grandparents James M. Parkhill and Lottie Lee Parkhill settled in St. Augustine, Florida around 1914-17 along with W. P. Soash.
W.P. Soash also started the Florida Fertile Land Company. Both J.M. Parkhill and his son George worked for the Florida Fertile Land Company. At the same time J.M. Parkhill started the Western Colonization Company. According to the St. Augustine Evening Record, Dated Saturday, November 11, 1916 is the following editorial: “A Western colonization company, headed by J.M. Parkhill of Kansas City, Mo., and Peoria, Ill., has just taken over and planned for platting and draining a large body of land in St. John's County. These lands lie just west of Espanola, between the Florida East Coast Railway and Crescent Lake. A drainage district 16,000 acres is planned and engineering work will begin this week. Reports on this body of land show it to be one of the best bodies of potato and general agricultural land in the county. It is all underlaid with clay from a depth of eighteen inches to two and one-half feet with a dark grey sandy loam surface, much of it open prairie land. There is a gradual fall of fifteen feet west to Crest Lake.
This Company which Mr. Parkhill heads employed W.B. Edminster to locate a large tract of potato land for them, and after nearly a year’s inspection of Florida properties, Mr Edminster selected these lands as the best large body in the potato belt. Mr. Parkhill and his associates have been interested in Texas colonization lands for several years and have taken millions of dollars into that State. The Mexican war and the disturbed condition along the border turned their attention elsewhere and it is largely due to Mr. Edminster's activities that St. Johns County secured this agency, which he believes will be a great force in colonizing this section.
This colony will be made up of practical farmers from the Dakotas and Illinois. Mr. Parkhill says his agency force has enough purchasers in sight to settle a large portion of these lands. He is a confirmed believer in the agricultural future of Florida. He has at this own expenses brought many farmers and financial men from the North into this section to get their opinion only after the closest investigation and each one has gone into their several locations and reported enthusiastically on the prospects of Florida lands as an agricultural investment.

Any information in any articles and newspapers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there,

An ancestor of mine Wade Stubbs, left Cheshire, England as an early settler in Florida in the days of George111. He lived in St. Augustine at first until Florida was ceded to the Spanish. He could become a Catholic or leave. He chose the latter - after marrying Annis Piles Smith, the widow of a captain on the St. John`s river. They were given compensation for their lands and moved to Nassau first before going to the Turks & Caicos islands

The Florida Death Index says Katherine died May 24, 1990, but the Social Security Death index says April 24, 1990. Would like to locate the family as Katherine is the only descendant of Frank M Brown. If she had no children, his line died out. Katherine had a brother, Herbert, but I don't think he married and he died in 1991.

I am looking for any information on Robert Joseph Oliver who died in St. Augustine on December 30, 1931. Robert was buried in Moultrie Cemetery on December 31, 1931. Prior to his death he lived at 46 Marine Street and was a merchant. Parents listed on Death Certificate are James Oliver and Mary Dudley. He was born in Effingham County, GA in 1856. I am looking for info on parents, siblings and children.

I am also seeking info on Georgia E. Oliver Pickett, who died December 7, 1917 in Duval Co., Fl and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. She was a nurse and was born c. 1860 in Chatham Co., GA.

James F. Oliver, born August 1861 in GA, was living in Duval County in the 1900 census, as well, and was married to Elizabeth Louisa Boon, a native of Canada, in 1893 in Chatham Co., GA. I believe he was in Hillsborough County, FL in the 1910 census, while his wife was still in Duval County.

I would appreciate obit or other info on any of these Olivers.

Thank you for any help!

Her name was Cynthia Sherratt. See if any of her old postings are available on Ancestry.com. Some of her correspondance had Stubbs in the Turks and Caicos. The Wade Stubbs who married the widow, Annis Piles did not have any children with her. Regards.

Hi,
Thanks. What ever is easier for you, scanning or transcribing, will be great. Turns out this Leonard is from yet another branch of the family that comes from Georgia. The Leonard I had originally sought was from Philadelphia.
