Joseph Marion Smith

Looking for family of Joseph born 1846 died 1908 in Putnam County Florida. I know that his father John was living with him in 1880. He married Myoma Ellis probably around 1870.

IN the 1885 Census Joseph is listed with a son also named Joseph. I am very curios if anyone knows where this son went and if perhaps he is Joseph O Smith whose wife was Virginia Alice ?

Some of their children were Gertrude (married Henry Johnson), Freeman, Dan, Leola, Mabel & Jesse.

Joseph O Smith is buried near John Hampton Smith the son of Joseph and Myona Ellis. I am thinking maybe Joseph is the son of Joseph Marion from a previous marriage.

I have made an attempt to locate places on the internet where cemetery information is available. The Putnam County page is on MyCemeteries.com Florida page http://mycemeteries.com/USAFL.htm

Please do not be upset if a cemetery is misspelled or is otherwise inaccurate from your viewpoint. It was listed because it contained information that may be helpful to anyone looking for family in Florida.

I would appreciate assistance in making sure the listing is accurate and complete and especially if more information exists online that I am unaware of.

Please send me corrections and additions to T42@MyCemeteries.com or just reply here.
(Allen Wheatley)

In the census for Clay Co., 1860 their last name was spelled Barski, in 1870 it was spelled BeRoskey. I have found several spellings of this name. If this sounds familiar please contact me.

Joseph “Joel” Noah TOWNSEND, born June 1855 and died Aug 1925, was married to Mary Rebecca “Banie” ADKINS, born 1860. They had three sons, Lucius N. TOWNSEND, born June 1878, Frederick TOWNSEND, born Sept 1880 and James Edward TOWNSEND, born Jan 1883. They lived in the Hawthorn area of Alachua County, Florida. I believe that Frederick and James Edward lived in the Palatka area in the 1920’s. Banie ADKINS passed away and Joseph “Joel” Noah TOWNSEND married her cousin Sarah Ann Elizabeth “Lizzie” ADKINS. They had two daughters, Leona TOWNSEND, born Sept 1888 and Ivy TOWNSEND, born March 1891. This family also lived in Palatka, Putnam County, Florida. Joseph and Sarah are both buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palatka, Putnam County, Florida. I am related and trying to extend my research on this line and hopefully make contact with a living descendant.

Seven Veterans Tombstones/JAMES SINGLETARY

Hello:

I am working on finding the burial place of JAMES SINGLETARY, 1878-1981. He is one of seven veterans whose tombstones were stolen from a Palatka funeral home and found in St. Johns County serving as stepping-stones to an abandoned trailer.

These veterans’ stones made the national news around Veteran’s Day. This link takes you to a compilation of stories about them:

http://www.co.putnam.fl.us/palatka/Cemeteries/EVERGREEN%20P/...

We learned that five of the markers go to Evergreen Cemetery in Palatka, and one in Pattersonville Cemetery in Orange Mills. These have been taken care of. The seventh veteran, a native of Palatka, JAMES SINGLETARY, was buried in a cemetery in Raiford, Florida, for reasons unknown and unrecorded. The obituary does not list the name of the cemetery, nor does the death certificate.

My husband and I are willing to bring Mr. Singletary’s monument to Raiford and install it.

My hope is that a Singletary family member or someone with local knowledge of the area’s cemeteries and funeral homes will see this and help us honor this veteran.

Thank you for your help.

Mary E. Murphy
Brother M W age 76

My question is this, is Lewis the brother of Alexander Wattles or Maggie Wattles??

Lewis's father, Gee Dupree, was born in 1782 and died in 1845. His mother, Ann Maria Dart, was born in 1802 and died 1862. Alexander Wattles, Sr would have been born about 1874 or 1884. I don't see how Lewis could be his brother. However, Maggie Wattles would have been born about 1846. She could have been Lewis sister, born sometime after her father's death, although Ann Maria would have been about 44 at the time. There isn't any record of this Maggie though.

I found Ann Maria living with her son, Lewis Theodore, on the 1860 Glynn Co., GA census. There isn't a Maggie, Margaret, or other child Maggie's age listed in the household.

If anyone knows anything about this family, please let me know. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lisa
Beck Family

I am looking for information concerning my Grandmother's family of Becks who came to Putnam County from Barnwell County, Georgia. I am not sure of the year but it would be between 1850 and 1870. They first settled in Western Putnam County close to Johnson, in fact I believe there is a Beck Lake in that area. My Great, Great Gandfather's name was James Lawrence Beck and one of his children Ira Beck worked in a clothing store in Palatka later on. I have a feeling that there were other relatives in the area.

James Lawrence Beck did not stay in Putnam County very long but moved to Marion County and settled. He married Elizabeth Ann Hodges in about 1870.

If anyone has any information on the Beck Family, I would appreciate hearing from them.

James P.
