What era are you referring to?

One of the more famous yogis [sorry cannot recall his name] has an institute there currently. Santa Fe Community College currently has a campus in Keystone Heights.

Since Melrose straddles four counties [Alachua, Bradford, Clay, and Putnam], you may need to check the county histories of each. Looking at "The River Flows North: A History of Putnam County" by Brian Michaels, I am not findin any kind of college or university there.

I have been told there was a Melrose University at one time and that it was located in Putnam Hall and/or was located near it. I cannot find any reference to Melrose University.

Can someone set me straight on this institution? Did it exist or could it be a garbled reference to University of Florida?

Thank you

1883 Mills or Rogers connections in Nashua, FL

A Vermont newspaper that covers the Forestdale and Brandon area had an article 2 Nov 1883 that listed the following:

"William Mills and his daughter, Mrs. L.H. Rogers, and her three children, started on Monday for Nashua, Florida, where they tend to reside permanently."

This daughter, Sarah A. Mills, was married to Lewis/Louis Henry Rogers in 1876 in Brandon, VT, and they had 11 children between 1876 and 1896, all born in Brandon area. I have no knowledge of either of them ever residing in Florida.

The father, William H. Mills, was married to Lydia A. Hackett. Other than this article and the listing of them on Sarah's marriage record, I have no further information on them.

Does anyone have any knowledge as to why they might have chosen Nashua as a possibly place to relocate - such as relatives in the area? I'm wondering if Sarah might have had plans to separate from Lewis, then changed her mind, as there was no mention of her husband in this article, and they had another child born in Brandon in July, 1884, only 8 1/2 months later.

The only Nashua, Florida, that's listed on MapQuest appears in Putnam County.

MY gr-gr-grandfather was Meredith Grainger (probable middle name Benjamin), b8 Oct 1811 according to my family records. I beleive he is the Benjamin Grainger in the 1850 Census, the M Grainger in the 1860 Census and the Meredith Grainger in the 1870 Census as the other names listed agree with my family documents. I am decsended from his son Hugh James Grainger 1847-1889, his son Hugh James Grainger 1889-1969, and his daughter Doris Grainger Land 1923-1996, my mother. I am serching for generations past Meredith. Do you have any information you could share regarding further generations? I am especially looking for his roots in SC and back to Scotland where I always understood the family came from. I do not know if we are related to any Jefferson Co, FL Graingers, but I was always told the family originally came from SC and know there are many Graingers in/from Horry Co. Please let me know if you can help.-Nadia
My great grandmother was born in Ft. Myers Florida in 1908 her name was Agnes Faye Driggers. I believe she had 4 sisters although I am not sure of their names, Alice Mae is one for sure. Unfortunately she passed away before I became really interested and could pointedly question. We always called her mother Granny Driggers, but I wish I knew her name. It's always been known that we have Cherokee blood. My great grandma would talk of going to visit her grandmother and how she would be smoking a pipe wearing a long black dress and sweeping her dirt floor. I know Driggers is an old florida name so this might not even pertain to your query.

Ann Crabtree

Virginia Ann Crabtree, 70, of Satsuma, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka.

She was a former president of the Downtown Merchants Association of Palatka, member of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and founder, chair and committee head of the Blue Crab Festival, where she was "Mudder Crab." Ann was born in Melbourne, Fla., to A.C. and Alice H. Woodrow. She attended Melbourne High School and was a member of the Melbourne Marching Band. She was known by her children for her specialty, "Periwinkle Soup." She moved to Palatka in 1961 and in 1966 married the love of her life, Tom Crabtree. With her four children and his three children, they became what their children like to call the "original" Brady Bunch. A certified ceramic instructor, she owned and operated a ceramic shop. She was affectionately known by her grandchildren/great-grandson as Mudder aka Mudd. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved living life to the fullest. She always wanted to make the best of every situation.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Porter Wilkinson, who was killed on the USS Wasp in World War II; her beloved sister, Mrs. Marjorie Miller of Jacksonville Beach; and two brothers, Sidney Wilkinson of Bradenton and Albert Woodrow of Rockledge.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Crabtree: children, Teju (Mike) Adkisson of Interlachen, Toni (Gary) Sullivan of Avon Park, Steve (Donna) Laibl of Jacksonville, Marcia (Ben) Hall of Alpharetta, Ga., and Chip (Liz) Laibl, Danny (Tammy) Crabtree and Cindy (Ricky) Stallings, all of Palatka; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; aunt, Mary Freeman; and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins as well as beloved dog and constant companion, Cosmo.

It was Ann's wishes to be cremated. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Oliver officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of Northeast Florida, 112 Norma St., Hollister, FL 32147 or the Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177

Memories and Condolences may be sent to the family at

www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com

Hello Kristy,

I'm researching for WM (William Mitchell) Newbold * Abt. 1830, Tennessee. He was buried on Palmetto Cemetery, Putnam Co., Florida, remark on his tombstone "CSA". I found him on a list of CSA Veterans of Putnam County (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kristylean...), but there are no further dates. Therefore I would like to ask you if you have further information. Especially I'm interessted about any information about his parents or his exact birthplace, because the only information I've is that they have been Germans.

Thanks you.

Greetings from Switzerland

Christian

Misty, have you spoken to Janice Mahaffey at the Palatka public library? She is in charge of the archives and is very helpful. Also, I believe the Putnam County Genealogy Society meets at the library every Tuesday evening.

Also, the church [Peniel Baptist] may have a church directory with photos from that era if they were members there. [The other area churches should also have directories available, too: St. James United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, St. Mark's Episcopal, First Presbyterian, etc.]

I checked in "The River Flows North: A History of Putnam County", but didn't find much of anything in the index [but the index is far from thorough.]

Nancy Alvers might also be able to help you. She co-authored a Putnam County book with Janice Mahaffey. Contact me via ancestry's e-mail if you want her phone number.

There is also a local history museum down near the Bronson-Mulholland House that is open on a limited schedule.

Good luck,
Lisa Kay

I'm sorry, but I don't know Terry. Was he friends with Jerry Douglas [or some similar name]? Jerry's sister Gail is married into my family.

Please know that your aunt's absence from the funerals was never intended to be hurtful to the family. She is one of the most sentimental persons I have ever met, especially re: her family. She is, however, also stubborn and afraid of her own emotions.

I have a copy of Brian Michaels' book, The River Flows North, a history of Putnam County. I will try to get some of the info copied and sent to you this weekend.
You won't believe this, but I spoke with your aunt Dot [Dorothy] this week. She is still alive and well, still quite a character; one of my favorite people in the whole world. I think she's 80+ yrs old now.
Your cousin Ron is my neighbor [btw - he just got married]and BJ was also my neighbor until her untimely death. She was also good friends with one of my cousins.
Call your Aunt Dot. I know that she would love to reminisce with you and probably has many old photos, too. If you need a phone #, email me privately, or just look her up in East Palatka or San Mateo white pages. Ron's phone number should also be listed.
Dot LOVES Valentine's Day! A call from you might be the most perfect Valentine ever. She's not hard of hearing and is still sharp as a tack, so do give her a call.
It just went out of business about 5 yrs ago. The main factory and offices were located on River Street.

You might contact the Putnam County Historical Society or the Chamber of Commerce if you need more info.
I thought she was my aunt when I was little.
My cousin Betty Joe was a beautiful girl and died way too young, but she suffered for a long time.

hi LisaKay...

Thank you so much for replying. I do still try to keep up with what's going on with most of the remaining family members down there. Mainly though not through direct contact. I had recently heard that Ronnie got remarried. I don't have much direct contact with Dot, only sometimes a card. I did send her a card and some pics for Christmas. She really hurt us all by not coming to my dads (2001)funeral or her own sister, my mom Shirley's funeral in 2003. I have many fond memories of my aunt Dot's place and Springside. I loved going there as a kid.
Do you happen to know what has become of Terry? Last I always hear is that he is in jail?
Again....thanks so much for replying.
Kelly Hartman White, Columbia SC

YES!!!! That is me and my mother. Who are you and how did you get these pictures? Can you tell what year it was? My mother was Shirley Jean Davis Hartman. My mom passed away in 2003. Miss her terribly.

Kelly Hartman White

Kristy,
Thanks so much for the information but I already have it and have been to both Francis' and Racheal's graves. I THANK GOD that when I went to them I was with my mother who 3 months later was diagnosed with cancer and 9 months later joined her God and Family.
I know Francis moved to Putnam Co. from Hamilton Co. in/about 1881, when he and Rebecca moved there because of the better economic/job conditions.
THE ONE THING I DO NOT HAVE IS DOCUMENTATION that Rebecca is in a plot next to him. One of his daughters, Rosetta (Hall)Bohannon is buried in the plot next to him. I have asked the Church secretary but she says she has no information. After the deaths of both of our parents my brother and I have set out to document our family history and to place markers on all of our un-marked ancestors graves.
Please feel free to send any information you have on the Hall family line. I will glady send ALL that I have, I am not one that tries to keep my research to myself or a select few.
My personal e-mail is: mark.a.hall@us.army.mil
I have a lot of information on the rest of the Hall Family that moved to Putnam Co. and further information on those after.
I look forward to your reply,

Mark
Where are you located at? If you are in the Putnam area there is information on the family at Palatka Libray. Newspaper clippings and others that are related. I live in the area.
