Almon Brown Strowger

Inventor. He was an undertaker who believed that telephone operators were sending calls to his competitors unfairly. Before the turn of the 20th century he invented the first Dial System so people could select for themselves. He brought it to the Bell System who was not interested. He then brought it to Automatic Electric Co who adopted it. Telephone switching based on his invention (The Strowger Switch) was in use into the 1970's.

He was right. The town operator was the wife of the rival undertaker, and routed all calls to him. Instead of getting angry, he did something about it. Bravo!
