I haven't. I have looked here in Attala Co., and in Choctaw Co. where some of Robertson and Fanny's children lived. Nobody seems to know anything about him. I feel sure he is related to the other Sweatt's here in Attala Co. but I haven't been able to link him to any yet. I don't even know when he died or where he is buried. The family seems to think he was in a hospital in Jackson when he died. But they can't remember where they heard that or which hospital. I'm still looking. I am determined to find him. There is a good bit of information on the Sweatt's at the Attala Co. Library but nothing on him. Do you know who your g-g grandfather's parents were?
My email is diana.mariethayer@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Diana

Diana, my gg-grandfather was John Sweatt, b 1824 in SC, lived in Attala County, MS in 1850s and 1860s, near your Robertson Sweatt and the other Sweat/Sweatts. Have you been able to determine the father or mother of your Robertson or how he is related to the other Sweat/Sweatts? Thanks.

I just looked at my notes Cicero's father was named Nathan. Rev. Nathan Sweatt actually. He was murdered here in the 1800's by the Confederate Soldiers. They hung him and threw him in the Yockanookany Bridge with a 30 pound brick tied to him. I found this story Tuesday at the library. If I were you I would contact Ann Breedlove at the Attala Co. Library. She has been very helpful to me in my search of other relatives. If I can help you with anything else let me know.

My g-grandfather, Allen N. Sweat, was born in MS in 1865. He married Nancy Jane Bryant, born in Tenn in 1866. They married in Haywood Co. Tenn. They had at least 10 children. My grandfather was one of their sons, Caro/Karo Sweat. I've found very little info re this Sweat line.
I was told as a child that our ancestors were "Ivory's", and that the Sweat's adopted an Ivory. No idea if this is true, or if it is, when this event occured.
Does anyone have info?
The Search for Morris M. Sampson

Since I was a little girl, my great-grandfather, Morris M. Sampson, has lurked somewhere in the shadows of my mind.

I knew little about him except that he bore strong Native American and Caucasian features, but identified himself as a black man. He also was said to be “high” sheriff of Madison County, which I recall as being a source of great pride for my father.

It is unclear the circumstances that brought Morris Sampson from his birthplace in North Carolina to Florida, and for a black man born in 1834, that may forever be a mystery.

Was he a slave? Had he been a member of one of several free black families in Cumberland County who boarded a wagon train in the 1850’s and migrated to Ohio, educating themselves at Oberlin, then returning south as preachers, teachers and political leaders?

Had he served in the Civil War, then changed his name as many of his contemporaries were known to have done?

What is certain is that at age 33, Morris ended up in Lafayette County where records indicate that he was voter registrar in 1867. A year later, he was a sheriff and justice of the peace in Madison County, working alongside Sheriff David Montgomery, a black man appointed by Gov. Harrison Reed during Reconstruction, a time when the area’s lawlessness was receiving national attention.

Morris and his wife, Amanda Tookes, started a family. Their son, Preston, was my grandfather.

During these tumultuous times, Florida records document that Morris and Montgomery received death threats almost daily. In a report to the United States Congress in 1872, Sheriff Montgomery testifies that his men made more than 500 arrests in three years, with more than 63 court cases referenced there. A newspaper reported that the sheriff barely escaped death when armed “desperados” ambushed him in the woods.

But there is one record that I cannot find – it has to do with one horrible night, sometime between 1880 and 1885, when Morris Sampson was lynched in the back woods of Madison County. There is no record of his death or his burial, no memorial of a life lived with vision and passion and courage in the face of incredible odds. His daughter, Charity, was 17 at the time and it was she who passed the story down to her nephew (my father).

A year or so after Morris died, Charity married a Frenchman and moved to Jacksonville. My great-grandmother Amanda and the other children followed soon thereafter and my family’s connection to Madison came to a bitter end.

In the years that followed, the Sampson family began to splinter and scatter. Some may have passed for white and disappeared in search of a less brutal life. Others died too young, leaving their children to fend for themselves. My father was orphaned at the age of nine, and by the time I was born in 1956, all of my paternal relatives were either unknown to me or long dead.

My family on my mother’s side is blessed with strong familial ties and countless close relatives with whom I share a bloodline and a vibrant historical perspective. My father, however, was alone with no history of his own.
For reasons that I cannot explain, even as a child, I quietly mourned my unknown people, imagining their faces and finding small ways to honor their memory even if I didn’t know their names.

When my father passed away in the 1980’s, I made a promise to re-assemble his broken past, but it was not until recently that I began an earnest search. What I have discovered thus far has both moved me to tears and filled me with pride.

When I began this journey, my view of Madison and Lafayette counties was through a lens dimmed by tragedy. As much as I want to visit the place where Morris lived and loved, laughed and cried, I cannot help but wonder if every flowering tree that I see might be the one under which he lay dying.

But the journey also has introduced me to some really fine people whose families have lived in Madison and Lafayette for centuries. They have taken time out of their lives to offer me guidance, encouragement and something that feels almost like kinship. We are on the same page, honoring the lives of those who came before us. Morris M. Sampson would be proud.
The newspaper for Madison Couty is the Madison County Carrier or the Enterprise Recorder. They are both own by the same entity, Greene Publishing, (www.greenepublishing.com). The E-R would have been the only one operating in 1975.

However, Madison Coutny obituaries are often published in the Tallahssee Democrat or, less likely, the Florida Times-Union (Jacksonville).

Good luck.

I FOUND THEM!!!

This is a followup to my post of 10-15-08. I have found all of the Madison County DeVanes except the 3 listed from the SSDI. I found these 16 DeVanes - and more - by finally locating them in the 1870 Census for Madison Co, using Soundex. They had spelled it Debane.

As it turns out Geo B DeVane, is the son of James S DeVane, who is one of the sons of Benjamin Franklin DeVane, b 1796, my ggggrandfather. Although listed as Geo B in early census, he went by his middle name, Benjamin, and was called Ben or Bennie.

This Ben also had an older brother, Wm J, who lived in Taylor County. Once I placed him as James S son also, I was able to link 16 additional DeVanes who lived in Taylor County.

What a breakthrough - after many years of searching.

Jean DeVane Meadows

Col. John Bryan (b. ~1734 Craven Co, NC, d. May 25, 1801,Jones Co., NC (formerly Craven Co.) m. Rebecca Martin) served as a Col. in the Craven Co. militia during the Revolutionary War.

His son John Hill Bryan was a captain, although DAR records show him as a Private. John Hill Bryan (b. Aug. 30, 1761, Craven Co., NC, d. before Nov., 1826. M. Elizabeth Harrison) named Edward, Jospeh, Penelope and Mary in his will, which was probated in Thomas Co, GA in 1826. They had 11 children, including John, who married a Cherokee woman with the last name Soles.

Almost nothing is known of John (b. 1788, New Bern, NC) who is believed to be one of the several John Bryans living in Madison Co., FL in the 1840s. I am searching for more info about his wife --Soles. One of their children, also John Hill Bryan, named for his grandfather of the same name, married his 1st cousin Susan Coffee, who was (Ann) Penelope Bryan and Gen John E. Coffee's blind daughter. Their son Joshua Soles Bryan is my great-grandfather.

Glad to make contact witn the John Wesley side of the family. My ggrandfather was Frank Nahor. I have a pretty extensive tree on the Frank Wheeler descendants and would like to share and swap. I grew up mostly in Madison county and knew there was another Wheeler branch living in Madison, but as lamented so much, at the time I lived there I was too young to care. Easy contact method: raemphillips@knology.net Randolph Phillips

Harriett, My gggrandmother Jane Jackson's maiden name could have been Fuguay, therefore my interest in the family. In the marriage book of Thomas County, Georgia, the last name of Jane has been changed three tmes and in such fashion that today it's impossible to know which was really her last name. If your research shows any connection to Golden Jackson who married Jane (possibly Fuquay) in Thomas County, Ga., please let me know of it. Randy Phillips

TOWNSENDS IN MADISON COUNTY

I have searched and re-written my Townsend connection with one Benjamin Franklin Townsend several times, located in Madison County in 1844, i.e the marriage of said Benjamin to Martha Jane McClamma (listing actually states name as Martha M McCanney, but I hope that was changed when I corrected this error to the compilers of the list, Book A 1831-1845 Elmers Gen Lib.)Martha Jane McClamma was the daughter of William and Mary (West) McClamma and married Benjamin (F)ranklin Townsend 4 Sep 1844 Book A Page 121. She had two children Permelia and Charles Irving and then died in 1848. The other two Benjamin's listed on the Marriage list are Benjamin J to Rebecca Overstreet in 1835 and Benjamin J to Jane Suggs in 1841. The parents of Martha Jane McClamma Townsend were both dead by 1847 and because William McClamma earned a land grant in Georgia for his death and service in the Mexican War, his children moved to Thomas County GA. Permelia Townsend moved with them and married a Patrick Breen from Ireland and some of their children ended up in Worth County GA. The son of Martha and Benjamin, namely Charles Irving born 1847, has been a dead end. This information has been documented by the McClamma bible records and affidavits submitted to the courts during the land grant procedures. Now my question, of course, is where is this Benjamin Franklin Townsend and how does he figure in with the tons of information listed on Rootsweb and Ancestry.com. Does anyone have information they can share? Martha Jane McClamma was born 1826, so I have put Benjamins age at the same.
