Based on the research I have done and interviews with family members Leonard and Arthur are the sons of Annie Smith and Elam Free. Who are Annie's parents. I am not a direct family member but some of the Frees tie into my family in several places. The story I heard about Annie's death is that when the boys were young she became ill and went to stay with her parents in Bonifay? and later died. This was told to me by Leonards's son-in-law.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. No one should do that to another person. There was a lot of poverty in this county as was in most southern counties. Seems like people feel they have risen about their beginnings...or are ashamed for some reason. I don't want to judge them just trace my family line. I would be interested in knowing who your Renew family might be. I have found nothing out in Liberty Co about mine. I know who my grandmother was but that is it. She was Willie Mae Renew Lowe.

Yes, I have had exactly the same "closed mouth" responce from a Ranew relative. I had driven all the way from the near the Canadian border to Quitman Georgia to interview who hadd identified herself as my grandmother. She talked to me for 2 hours about all kinds of family stories, while I madly filled in family group sheets. After returning home, I began to check census and vital records for validation. Not one, single word was true! As it turns out she was not my grandmother at all, and had known it all the time! The truly sad part is that I was raised in a series of foster homes and I was just thrilled to have found a "relative". She was a great aunt, but chosse to lie. I do not know what these Renews are hiding but I think her behaviour was reprehensible!

Maybe you could search some census records in and around Quitman, Georgia to get a lead. The Ranews moved from Quitman, GA., to Florida panhandle in the early 1900's. One of the Ranew sisters married a Duckworth, the other married a Strickland.

Orange is actually a small little community located between Bristol and Estiffanulga on County Road 12. Just below the Lake Mystic Community and before the Apalachicola National Forest. There isn't really much there except for a few homes. Once there was a general store, I want to say the building is still there but haven't been in a few years. That is where all of my Florida family, Sumner, is from.

The West Gadsden Historical Society, with headquarters in Greensboro, Gadsden Co., Florida, is interested in the history of the historic 2-story house located in Sumatra, Liberty Co., Florida, which was known at one time as the Sumatra Hotel. It is our understanding this house was built in 1905.

The only remaining original depot of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad is located in Greensboro. The original run of the AN RR from River Junction, in n.w. Gadsden Co., to Port St. Joe, Gulf Co., took place in April 1907. The Sumatra Hotel was built during the time of the railroad construction.

The West Gadsden Historical Society would appreciate comments from anyone who has information or old photographs of this historic house as well as any history or photographs pertaining to the Apalachicola Northern Railroad.

I have a John H Johnson, born abt 1844, died 21 April 1907 in Gadsden County, Fla; married to Mariah F Hubbard, also born about 1844, death date unknown, with four children, Dallie, Albert, Willis and Frances. I have not connected him with my Johnson family, but he was in the same area, so there may be a connection. I have Lawrence listed as John H Johnson's brother, based on the 1880 census.

It has been awhile since I worked on my Renew side but would like to begin again. I have never seen such a tangled mess as the relationships in Liberty Co!! My grandmother was Willie Mae Renew Lowe. Her mother was Conny Emma Hill who married (I think) 1st John Renew, 2nd Charles Renew and then Francis Phillips. However, it is difficult to confirm anything because "NO ONE IS TALKING" if you don't live in Liberty Co. I am trying to be funny. Seriously, the very people that could answer questions for me will not give me the time of day. Has anyone else run into that problem? Would love to share what I have been able to find out!

Re: Sarah Ann (BROWN) RENEW

Hello Jim,

I think we're cousins! My GGG grandmother was Sarah Ann BROWN, who married John Thomas RENEW.

Is it true there is some Native American blood in the family? My grandma told me that there is. She remembers Aunt Zula (Sarah Ann's daughter) and once told me that Aunt Zula looked "very Indian."

Also, I've seen pictures of my grandmother, who could easily be 1/4 or 1/8 Native American. My grandma always said that the family had Cherokee blood, but then she told me a few years ago that her ancestors was actually Cree (I don't know why the change!).

Anyway, Sarah Ann was my Grandma’s paternal grandmother, and she died before my Grandparents was born. But they all live down there in Liberty County so they passed on a lot of stories orally about the family tree and the family history.

I visited Florida this summer and made a recording of my grandma and great uncle (Benjamin Franklin Faircloth). Uncle Benny said that Sarah Ann was in “Chatahoochee” in Florida, which they told me was the state mental institution. She died in Bristol, so my great uncle told me.

They told me some interesting stories about Sarah Ann's children. The told me that they called Ruth Parthena Renew “Granny.” They also talked about their great-uncles and aunts.

My great-uncle said that Charles Renew (born in 1865) fell in love with a woman from Sumatra and she told him he was married. So he killed her husband, and “went down to the river and caught hold of a log and floated all the way down to Apalachicola.” Later he told me that Uncle Arch was "runnin from the law, so he jumped on a horse backerds” and he road off, and he was never seen again.

I know some more about them too. I would be willing to any other info if you like, as well as my gedcom, which is kind of small but I’ve been working on it a few years now, and there are about 300 people in it.

Also, I did a search on familysearch.org and found some people listed in Blountstown and Bristol who were doing some research on Sarah Ann Brown. They are listed at the end of this post.

Best regards,
Andy Dilbert
Cairo, Egypt

Sarah Ann BROWN (AFN: 1J6T-7D) Pedigree
Sex: F

------------------------------------------------------------

Submitter(s):
LAVANIA FAYE EUBANKS Microfilm: 1394169
P O BOX 85
BRISTOL FL Submission: AF83-036976
USA 32321

STEVEN ALLEN CHERRY Microfilm: NONE
711 BURNS AVE
BLOUNTSTOWN FL Submission: AF90-100458
USA 32424

If my research is right, Sarah is the daughter of William T. Brown and Elender (Ellener, Ellenor or Eleanor (LNU)). Her siblings are John F (or T.), Ellener L (or S.), Polly, Caleb, Elisabeth, Edward David, and Cornelius B.

I can't find where Sarah or John Renew are buried. I've looked online at all the Liberty and Gadsden cemetery sites.
