My Grandmother was Ruby Lula Shields From Tallahassee FL Ponce De Leon Fl Leon Co. She was married to a Simon Peter Gray. Ruby was born May 27th 1915 and died April 09 1986 I didnt really have very much time with her and wasnt able to get to know her or her family tree can you help? it seems to me you may have some of her ancestry already.

I was wondering if anyone has access to marriage records for Leon County.
Jack Shafton married Iris Jacquelyn Morrison on 9 Sep 1945.

I found the index for it in the Clerk of Courts for Leon County website, but couldn't get access to the information.
It stated it was in Book 00W7, Page 00001.

I also found their daughter's marriage info on the same site.
Frances Lou Morrison wed William Bamford Pou 12/07/1951, Book 00W8, Page 00077

I am looking for a genealogy researcher to hire, to obtain an obituary from February 1948, which I believe is in the newspaper collections at Florida State University at Tallahassee and/or at the Florida State Archives in Tallahassee. I am prepared to pay a reasonable fee for research.

I have the exact date of the newspaper (and name of the newspaper) that the obit will be found in and the page number. My copy of the obit is so faded that you can't read most of what it says, and I would like to get a better copy of it.

Any suggestions as to how to find a researcher for this, would be welcomed.

I have searched the FSU site and can't find any info abt them when they taught there. Adele and Clarence i don't believe had any children. Carol could be Clarence's dau from a previous marriage. If she inherited the home from her father would that explain no probate?

I'm looking for information on my great-great grandfather Wiley Bentley (alternate given name spellings include Willey, Wyley, Wyly and alternate surname spellings include Bently and Bintley), & his brother Jerry, black men who were born in Leon County between 1843-1850 and lived there until their deaths (at least Jerry did). Wiley was married to Martha and Jerry was married to Hannah. I initially located Wiley, Jerry, and Hannah on the 1870 census and found the 3 of them and Martha on the 1880 census and subsequent censuses with their children. The 1880 census was the last time that I located Wiley. I've located dates of death for Jerry, Hannah, and Martha, but not for Wiley. I've also located marriage information for Jerry and Hannah but not for Wiley and Martha. I'd like to learn when and how Wiley died and when he and Martha married. Wiley and Martha also had a son named Wiley who died in October, 1964. This Wiley is my great-grandfather and his daughter Ella is my grandmother.

I have not been able to locate the Bentleys before 1870 but I'm currently trying to determine who might have been their slaveholder and the identity of Jerry & Wiley's parents. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What is odd?
What is odd, is that the property (1552 Hickory Ave, Tallahassee, FL)that Clarence Edney owed was never probated. According to the public records of Leon county.
And if you go to www.intelius.com for records search it seems as though he still lives. I know the SS death index has him listed passing away some time ago. If you do a reverse address search for that address, you find that a Carol A Jones lives there. Her age (59) makes her young enough to be a daughter to the Edney's?
But, you can contact FSU and they can give you a profile on the Edney's while they were there.

The microfilm copies of Tallahassee Democrat are located at the Leon County Library, 2nd floor, downtown and the obit should be there. Sorry, but due to age, I do not go down and search at the library like I used to.

I run across your post on the message board tonight. I am researching Nannie Taphnia Watts who married Samuel Jefferson Shields. Nannie was the sister of my G-grandmother, Lula Florence Watts. I was not getting very far with my research on Lula, so I thought I would research Nannie and see what I come up with. If you have any info on this line, I would greatly appreciate it. I have a photo of Lula with her father and I believe the lady to be her step-mother, as her mother passed when she was 2. Thank you in advance for any info. Also any info on Morrison family of Grady County, GA would be great, if you have anything.

You may look at obits on microfilm in Leon County Library, second floor. I used to look up obits down there for people but no longer go downtown much. Hope this is of some help. If you need other obits for this area, I'll be glad to look to see if I have them in my files.

There is only 1 volunteer there now for headstones. You might try asking her about obits and who might do them in that area. Also,consider the area. I would pick the larger city nearby and see if there might be an obit in those papers. It might be in a differant county. So, check RAOGK for that area also. See if the local library would be of any assisitance. Maybe there is a local historical society that might also help.
Hopefully someone can get those for you if they are there. Obits are elusive.

I would have been glad to write you two small essays but I don't have any Chaires-Burroughs and don't know anything about them.

My Oglesby's came from Hamilton, Levy & Marion Co., FL and didn't moved to Leon Co., FL. I have some other family that came from Taylor/Jefferson Co.,FL's but only Johnnie Duncan and his wife Emily Box moved to Leon Co., where they passed away.

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Robert Henderson "Randy" Brock, age 54, of Mt. Airy, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009 at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Brock was born in Tallahassee Florida, November 23, 1954, the son of the late Thomas Edgar and Wanda Lee Head Brock.

Mr. Brock was a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge # 322 and was a self employed paint contractor.

Surviving are his wife, Laura Bowman Brock of the home; one daughter, Olivia Suzanne Brock of the home; his father and mother by marriage, O. L. and Doris Bowman of Mount Airy; brothers-in-law, Joe Bowman and his wife, June of Wendell, NC, Mark Bowman and his wife, Cindy of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Margie Abbitt and her husband, Mac of Plymouth, Indiana; life-long childhood friend, Harry D. (Forest) Brown of Fletcher, NC; special friend, Larry Lichvar of Mt. Airy; one sister, Diane B. Hale of Raeford, NC, and one brother, Tommie Brock of Kannapolis, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 4 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Chapel with the service conducted by the Rev. Richard Loman and the Rev. Terry Freeman. I have over 15 years of Tallahassee Democrat obits on file. Dorothy May Hooper does not have an obit in April 2005. I forgot to look in May 2005, since she died at end of April. I will look in May and if it is there will send it to you. If you don't hear from me, the obit was not in May either.

I'm at a loss here. I cannot find a trace of your sister here in the state of Florida. The only suggestion that I have is to request a copy of her death certificate ($5.00) and see which funeral home handled her final arrangements. Perhaps they would have a copy of her death notice. Obituaries are paid by family, but most funeral homes will print a death notice as part of their service's.

I finally got the correct date of Dorothy's death.

April 26, 2005

She was elderly, about 81 years, living with her daughter, Cathy TUCK, on PLOWSHARE Rd., just east and in the suburbs of Tallahallee.

Dorothy was Cremated. As she and husband, had just recently joined their daughter, they did not have friends or other family in the area. So, I doubt if there was a Funeral or even a Memorial. Probably also NOT an Obituary.

However, it's reasonable to think her death would have been in the local Newspapers.

The last we knew here in Michigan was that Dorothy was living with one of her daughters in Tallahasse, or just east of, with Catherine TUCK & family, where we assumed she passed away.

Not sure of the date she died. I am trying to reach relatives in my area to find that out. Am still awaiting for their return calls.

When was your sister born? I cannot find a Dorothy Hooper in the Social Security Death Index with a death date of Feb 2004. Also, I could not find a Dorothy Hooper listed for Leon County public records.

There is a Dorothy May Hooper, death date Jan 2 2005, Citrus County. Obit states parents were Joseph and Mable Weiner; born in Manistee, Mich.

Any additional info that you can provide would greatly help in finding your sisters death notice.

HISTORY NOTES: James Martin SAULS

James Martin Sauls was known as "Martin".

He was married in West Virginia to Mary Ann Chafins and had two sons
before he married Willie Jane Jarrell. The two sons remained in West
Virginia when Martin & family moved to Florida.

He and his second wife, Willie Jane Jarrell, lived in Matewan, West
Virginia. Martin had lived in Wheeling, WV prior to this.

In his young days, Martin was an advance man for a circus (it may have
been Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show). He went ahead of the circus to
set dates for shows, make arrangements for show grounds, advertising,
etc. In the last year he was with them, he came all the way down to
Florida - then across the country to San Francisco. He left them there
and took a job on a ship headed for London and then on to New York.
He then returned to West Virginia.

After moving with his family to Florida in 1903, he spent his first
year farming and then, until 1914, he worked as a carpenter. From
1914 to 1926, he worked in the Everglades with the State Drainage
Board where they were digging the flood control canals. His final 10
years, he had an automobile repair garage in Tallahassee.

Martin was a member of the Florida National Guard.
