I'm sure you've probably already purchased your headstones by now but just in case you haven't I thought I'd let you know that the Rustin Vault Company is located in Chipley, FL which is in Washington County. Washington and Holmes are neighboring counties.

My husband's grandfather started the company and one of his cousins still operates it. It is located on Rustin Dr. in Chipley. They sell cemetery vaults as well as headstones.

Good luck!
Sharry Rustin

Listed in 1860 Census Holmes County is a family of Fountain's. Frederick, Malinda, Martha, Franklin, Mary, Alex, and Easter. If anyone knows anything about Mary or Easter/Ester? Fountain, would appreciate hearing from you.

I cannot locate Frederick & Malinda after 1863 in Holmes Co, and I did found Franklin and Alex marriage records in 1870s in Jackson County.

If there's anyone who might have a clue as to where they went, would appreciate hearing from you.
That document would also say where they were born. I've seen them in Alabama, but never looked in Florida, but suspect they are the same or similar forms, since it was the federal government that required them.

Ok, I'm 99% sure you are correct. On the marriage record, it lists Mollie Brown marrying J I Williams with witnesses Bar--? Brown and J I Brown. Aunt Mollie had an older brother, Barney Brown and an uncle James Irwin Brown. I'm pretty sure these are the witnesses. To my knowledge, she never had any children before she married Preston Bozeman. I could be wrong there, too. What do you have? Were there any children born in this first marriage? What happened to J I Williams?

Please contact me if you have any documented confirmation of "Renie" Johnson Coatney's Native American Heritage or nknow who does have it. (Married surname could be spelled Courtney)
I keep hearing that someone in her family((I'm a gggrandaughter) has made the connection but no one will ever answer. I really would appreciated just a name to contact concerning this. This is important for me to make a Native American religious connection. Anyone out there who can help please reply.

Thanks for setting me straight on that. Daddy just always talked about them and I never traced Sallie and Will very closely. My dad (Charlie Raymond Courtney) was 20 years younger so if the Brown's may have been cousins then Dad just thought they were brothers. This is one of those times when I wish I had explored those old family tales more closely.

I am also interested in the juke joint. A often whispered family story of my Great Aunt Ada Coatney/Courtney was that her older brothers had to go to a juke joint in the Bonifay area and "jerk Ada off a table dancing for men". She was always considered a colorful character who we loved. The whole family left the area in the 1930's.

This is in reply to an old posting. You might try the family of old cowboy movie star Johnny Mack Brown. Sallie Coatney was married to his brother. My dad idolized Johnny Mack Brown - Sallie Coatney was his great aunt.

Most likely some connection.

She was believed to be part native American.

About three years ago I was traveling through the area and met an older gentleman named Cecil Johnson who looked remarkably like my father (Charlie Raymond Courtney)
(Courtney named changed from Coatney around early 1900's) who grew up in Bonifay. Mr. Cecil Johnson lived in Argyll, Florida not very far from Bonifay.

Have you gotten any new info on the Holmes County Johnson's?

"on the first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five"
and
"the South West quarter of Section five, the east half of the North West Quarter, the North West quarter of the North West Quarter, and the North East quarter of the South West Quarter of section eight in the Township five North, of Range sixteen West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Tallahassee, Florida containing three hundred and twenty acres and nineteen hundredths of and acre." Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine"

I have been unable to locate any other records on this person and am especially interested in the possibility that he may be the father of William Chilton Allen who also purchased property on the west city line of Bonifay in 1885. William C. is the father of William James Allen; born Bonifay Mar 1888 who is my wife's grandfather.
tks to all for anything
Bill Bates

Can you tell me whether your granddad's sister, Mollie, is the same Mollie Brown who married James Irving Williams? I am a descendant of Andrew Elton Williams and have a big book about his descendants. In the book, the marriage between James Irving Williams and Mollie Brown (born about 1897) is listed. I think Mollie was your gdad's sister, since she is the only Mollie Brown who was born about 1896-1897 I can find in Holmes County, prior to their marriage in 1914. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, Johnny Mack Brown wasn't born until about 1903-1904. William Jasper Brown who married Sally Coatney, was born about 1860, according to the 1900 Holmes County, Florida census. It is highly unlikely that William had a brother born more than 40 years later!

ERMA GANELLE DEESE WILLIAMS: HOLMES COUNTY NATIVE -- OBITUARY

ERMA GANELLE DEESE WILLIAMS died suddenly with her husband and son beside her in their home by the Blakeley River at Spanish Fort, Alabama on May 8, 2009 . A resident of this area for over 60 years, she was a native of Bonifay (Holmes County) Florida, born on November 29, 1917. As the owner and manager of Baldwin Accounting and Tax Service for over 30 years, she was well-known in the business community on the Eastern Shore and in the Mobile area. Known as a devout Christian, Erma was baptized at the age of 12, and became a charter member of the Little Rock Assembly of God Church in Bonifay. Her sunshine personality, genuine smile and frequent laughter has caused her to be loved by many coast to coast, and especially throughout this community. Her genteel southern hospitality, her warm and caring concern, and countless, thoughtful deeds done for others throughout the years; along with the thousands of hot meals served and beds made ready to welcome any and all sojourners to her door, will surely continue to endear her to the hearts and minds of all who knew her. Her long, happy, caring and loving marriage becomes a role model for others who wish to follow in achieving the good life. And little wonder that, though it has always been private, there is found on the fly-leaf of both her's and her husband's bible and signed by each of them, these special words: "I want to live, I want to see, I want to know, I want to share, I want to be a Christian!" Erma was preceded in death by her son, Roy Lamar Williams, and is survived by her husband of 74 years, D. V. Williams; one son, Jimmy Vander Williams, one daughter, Marcia (Ronald) Foster, four grandchildren; Rebecca (Allen) Nelson, Ashley (Mark) Turbeville, Michael (Kathy) Foster, Susan Foster; and three great-grandchildren, Shannon Nelson, Staci Nelson, and Hayley Foster. Visitation will be at Pinecrest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama on Monday, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be conducted from the Chapel of Pinecrest Funeral Home on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. Internment will be at Pinecrest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, Alabama. An online guestbook may be signed at www.pinecrestfuneralhome. com.
