Juanita: You, Wanda, and I have been discussing this via email, but I wanted to post this for the benefit of other researchers:

The 1880 Madison County, Florida census has William Courtney, age 42, with wife, "Ranie", 35; children Isaac, 11; Adam, 7; Sallie, 5; and Ellen, 3. If this is the same family (and I believe it is since the names match those we are researching) I wonder why they were in Madison County, which is probably about 160 miles from Holmes County where they were in the early 1900's.

I know this is an old post but I haven't heard from you lately. Yes, these are our people and I also wondered why they were there. - I call our line "The Gypsy's" - the entire family of William Issac took off from the area in the 1930's. Thats how I got born in NC.

This is in reply to an old posting. You might try the family of old cowboy movie star Johnny Mack Brown. Sallie Coatney was married to his brother. My dad idolized Johnny Mack Brown - Sallie Coatney was his great aunt.

Most likely some connection.

My grandfather, Homer Brice Brown, was the son of William (Will) Brown and Sallie Ann Courtney/Coatney? Brown. He always told my mom that he was cousins with Johnny Mack Brown, but I know his dad was not Johnny Mack's brother. I was in touch with some of Johnny Mack's family several years ago...even his sister's family and we never could find the connection. I wish I could connect with them.
