To my knowledge, John Franklin Cogburn (married to Anne Spurling) is the son of John Wesley Cogburn 1840-1868 (married to Mary B. White 1847-1873). John Wesley's parents are Patrick Cogburn 1813-1891 (married to Elizabeth Odum 1817 - 1902). Patrick Cogburn is brother to James E. Cogburn 1801-1879 which is my g-g-g-great grandfather. Maybe you are already aware...but there is a book by Brett Cogburn titled, "Rooster: The Life and Times of the Real Rooster Cogburn." Photos of JFC are in the book. If I have the facts straight, JFC is his great-grandfather as well. My Cogburn family stemmed from Haywood County, NC (Hills of Canton and Clyde, NC). Seems like we would be distant cousins... :) Any corrections or additional info would be welcome!!! Thanks, Kim

We have a family story about my ancestor, Charles C. Burke. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Johnson. In 1870, they were living in Tampa and he was working as a ships carpenter. They had three children, Charles J., Anna M., and John. In 1880, Charles C., Charles J., and Anna are in Pensacola.

The story says that when Mary died, Charles put the children in a Catholic orphanage or home for a time. Presumably this was the reason Anna converted to Catholicism.

I have tried to identify a place in either Tampa or Pensacola where the children may have gone, but have had no success. Can anyone offer any help?

Thanks!

Denise

Hi!

I am researching my 2X great grandfather, Charles C. Burke, b abt 1829 in Sweden. I don’t know much about him, and nothing before 1861. He was a ships carpenter and living in Apalachicola, FL in 1861 when at age 32, he enlisted in the Confederate army. In 1870, he is married to Mary E. Johnson and living in Tampa, FL with three children, Charles J. (5), Anna M. (2) and John H. (3/12). Later records for Anna indicate she was born in Clearwater. In 1880, he, son Charles, and Anna are living in Pensacola. In 1900, Anna is married to John James O’Connell, son Charles is widowed and living with his sister, and John, Sr. isn’t found. I know lots about the descendents of John and Anna, but now I’m trying to work back.
The family says the Burke’s were Irish – the O’Connell’s certainly were – but census records indicate Charles Burke was born in Sweden. I do not understand much at this point about the surname Burke in Sweden and about Swedish immigration to the US, and to FL. Any light you could shed on this would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Denise

I can tell you that the librarian at the University of West Florida, Dean Debolt, did offer to scan it and send it to me as a pdf file; however, I've spoken with him twice, last November and again in January, and I still don't have it. When I spoke to him in January, he said it was on his list of things to do but he couldn't give me a firm date when he'd have it done. There was also a bookseller who had one for sale and replied to this thread of emails, but I responded to him and got no reply back. You might be interested in calling Debolt to see if you can find out more about when he'd scan the book? I'm a descendant of the Villar line and would love to be able to read the book and learn more about family history I only knew of from a brief mention in one of my grandmother's letters.
keep me posted on any progress you might make,
regards,
Merry Pawlowski

Hi!

I am descended from John James O'Connell and Anna Burke. John was born in Mobile in 1863 and moved to Pensacola between 1880 and 1900. The family home was on W. Chase St. The family was large and included William, a former city police chief; Charles, a former city assistant fire chief; Joe, a plumber; Matte, Louise, Margaret, Kathleen, Jeanette, and 2 more, I believe. John died in 1930 as the result of an industrial accident at NAS Pensacola.

Any cousins out there researchng these families? I am working on John's family right now. I'd love to share notes!

Denise

Hi Paul & whoever reads this:

Hi - I'm replying to this old thread in the hopes that someone will see this. I am descended from Nathan Hendrix and Harriet Hartsfield - they are my four-great grandparents. Their daughter Louisa Ellen married Henry Hilliard to continue my line. Nathan remarried after Harriet's death in 1866.

I've recently added the other children of Nathan and Harriet in hopes of connecting with distant cousins. I'm happy to share what information I've found and compare notes. I have no information on the Hartsfields, so that would be of interest as well.

Mike

I have looked through our ledgers of St. Michael's Creole Benevolent Association. First, it appears there are no female members of the Association until the 1950s. The ledgers are simple tallies of who has paid, sometimes omitting years. I did not find any entries or listings for Elizabeth Pons or any Tanners. The records are simple account books and nothing along the line of minutes, or even records of members of when they joined, left, died, or anything like that.

Dean DeBolt, University Archivist/university Librarian
West Florida History Center and University Archives
John C.
The Creole Benevolent Association was located on East Government street. I am interested in a finding someone associated with the society that may e be able to tell me if my ancestors Elizabeth "Lizzie" Neely Pons and her sister Catherine "Kate" Neely Tanner were members. Hopefully this can lead me to when Kate died and where she is buried. Lizzie resided with her husband, Henry and her sister, Kate, on East Government just a few houses down from the Association.
