I'm sorry that I can't help you directly, but I'm not related to this family. I just posted the abstract many years ago as a volunteer for the Escambia GenWeb site. However, below is a link to a book in PDF format that includes a copy of biographies for Pitt and Eitzen, one of which mentions Amundsen. I don't know if it will help at all or not, but I thought I would pass it on. Good luck in your research.

http://fulltext10.fcla.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?type=boolean;...

I have checked the Pensacola newspapers from February 3, 1980 through February 10, 1980 and there is no obituary for Curtis. We get a lot of military burials in Barrancas National Cemetery and if the person died elsewhere or was from a certain place, usually the obituary appears in the area they died or their family puts it in the hometown paper. That may or may not have happened in this case, but in any case, there is no obituary that I could find for him. Sorry. --Dean DeBolt, University Librarian, Special Collections, University of West Florida Library, Pensacola.

Music teachers in Pensacola 1830's to Pre-Civil War 1860's

Greetings Pensacola Escambia Researchers:

I'm working on my family history and its ties to music history. I do hope that you can help me.

I'm looking for individuals or organizations that might have taught my ancestor, Edward Wyer (b.1849) to play music. Edward was a free Creole of Color when he joined the Union Army's Corps 6th D'Afrique at Ft. Pickens as a drummer boy. His former slave owner was Margaret Overton, wife of Samuel R. Overton and daughter of Robert Mitchell. I've researched both family archives back to Tennessee and North Carolina. Nada!

Since Edward was a classical music teacher to both white and "colored" people and was known for his Creole brass band. He obviously was trained in music before he went off to war at Port Hudson. The late Norman Simons of the Pensacola Historical Society sent me several clips about Edward's musical activities. His research, along with mine, disproves that Edward Wyer played jazz of the blues on the streets of Pensacola. LOL!

Edward was a Catholic, so perhaps St. Michael's may have been the source of his musical education.

I've also researched old Pensacola newspapers for music teachers, but I can't make a connection to Edward Wyer.

Paula Ferraro, a poster on this site was kind enough to contact me about my research and confirmed that her Zernial ancestor was a music teacher.

I welcome any suggestions that you may have.

Regards,

Kathleen Wyer Lane

DIGITAL LIBRARY ON AMERICAN SLAVERY

Petition 20183102 Details
Location: Mobile, Alabama
Salutation: To the Honorable Abner S. Lipscomb Chief Justice of the State of Alabama & Judge of the first Judicial Circuit Sitting in Chancery (LIPSCOMB, Abner S.)
Filing Court and Date: Circuit, 1831-March-17
Ending Court and Date: No Ending Court Specified

General Petition Information

Abstract: Latchlin Durant seeks to regain possession of slaves given by his grandfather McGilveray to his mother. Durant says that the slaves were "forcibly taken" and, in 1803, delivered to David Tait [Tate] of Baldwin County, who held them in trust for Alexander McGilveray, a minor who died in England without any issue. Durant states that all the named parties "were residing in the Indian Nation & under Indian Laws at the time of the transactions" and that "all the parties except McGilveray your Orator's grandfather were of Indian blood & descent by the father or mother or both." Durant declares that as the only surviving son of his mother and the oldest surviving male descendant of his grandfather, "by the laws of the Creek tribe of Indians ... he is the sole heir of said McGilveray." Now Tait has died, and Durant asks the court to order his heirs and executors to account for the slaves, which he estimates to be more than one hundred; to compensate him for their services; and to return them to his possession.

Result: No recorded result
# of Petition Pages: 10
Related Documents: Transcript of Case Proceedings, Durant v.

Hi.
Not quite sure if your the person that sent this reply to my post "Searching for daughter who was adopted in 1962 in Florida"
cdjw2 (View posts) Posted: 17 Jul 2009 7:13PM

Classification: Query
Surnames:

"Did Joyce have any brothers as they are easier to find? Get obit on the Mother Anna. Tell me if I can help any more."
If so I want to thank you for responding to my inquiry. Unfortunately I am no longer a member of ancestry.com as I found that there really wasn't any useful information for my particular type of search. As to Joyce, the birth mother of my child she now resides in the Village retirement complex in Florida. Joyce is aware of the whereabouts of my daughter but is unwilling to share this information. The closest I came to any of her family assistance was from one of her cousins located in Northern Maine who is a family counselor. I assumed she got in contact with Joyce on my behalf and something transpired between them as after a few emails between the cousin and myself she said that she had to honor Joyce's decision no matter what Joyce's rationale might be because she was family. So she asked me please not to contact her anymore. I have honored her request and sent no more emails. The basic problem is and always was that Joyce was from a Jewish family and I was not. Joyce was sent to Florida to stay with her Aunt while she had the child and then my daughter was immediately put up for adoption and I strongly suspect it was some family member as Joyce told me she knew where the child was but wouldn't divulge that information when she had came back from Florida. I had been promised by Joyce's mother that if I had entered the service I could get custody of my child, so I had made arrangements with my Aunt to care for the child when I while I was serving my term in the service however before I got out of boot camp they already put my daughter up for adoption. Which I guess was there plan all along to side track me? There was never any animosity between Joyce and myself, I always assumed Joyce was coerced into giving my daughter up. But when I contacted her late last year, she said that she didn't know my daughter was, then she said she didn't think she was in Florida anymore, then she said she thought she was out in the Midwest some place and that she wasn't with the “family." Then when I tried to inquire for more information she responded by saying it isn't if our daughter is out the street somewhere. She wouldn't give me any information, the exact day the child was born or the hospital or even the child eye color. What is very disheartening is there is nothing in my past warrants this kind of treatment? Her father fad asked me if I was willing to convert to the Jewish religion which I was willing to do but the mother had other ideas I guess. I've never been a drinker, or fool with drugs or been trouble with the law so there's nothing in my past to make her react this way. The child meant the world to me, I was raised by a foster mother who passed away when I was eight so I know what its like on both sides of the fence. I had promised Joyce I would never reveal her to my daughter and my intentions where only to be able to at least look upon my daughters face before death was at my doorstep. I've been searching since 1962 and its been a long sorrowful life's journey for me, filled with so many sleepless nights and midnight walks and tears enough to fill an ocean. Not to sound like a bigot but the Jewish race is really a segregated race and I was young and naive, and a young heart that is in love doesn't see fences and only listens to the feelings in their heart and I paid the ultimate price for believing love knew no boundaries. Well, I wander far off the beaten track and all I wanted to say is thank you for your response and kindness.
Thank You,

Roger Blanchard Blancra@aol.com

One became a Colonial Governor (my line of the family) and the other I don't know much about. They are both on Ancestry and their immigration records are there as well on different pilgrim ships. My suggestion is to follow their lines. Good luck hunting.

Escambia County records only have 3 records that include Salvant's. And that was from 18 yrs ago.
There are no hits on phone's for Salvants in Pensacola.
Maybe you should consider requesting your grandfather's obit or death cert. That should have information that pertains to your family.
Frank

Here is a picture (attached) of the Daniel Sheehan you mentioned. Your story as far as I know seems quite accurate and fits my family's "lore" perfectly, except that Chantilly is near Montgomery and belonged to John Ashurst (purportedly the first framed house in Central Alabama nick-named "The White House"). It's east of Montgomery at the corner of Vaughn Road and Chantilly Parkway. There is a grave yard on the property, but the names do not appear to be Ashurst.

Daniel and Martha Naomi Ashust lived in the Millbrook/Wetumpka area north of Montgomery, but them moved to Eufaula in Barbor county. Her headstone is in the cemetery there.

They had a number of children. I have those names if you are interested.
