Hi from Nevada,
Thank you for the reply. That is very kind of you.
I wrote for a marraige check today in DC. Following is what I have on Alyce Clara Dressler who married Neil Thompson somewhere ca. 1944 to 1947.
Alyce Clara Dressler: After twenty years of research trying to find the maiden name of Neil Thompson’s wife, Alyce Clara ----, the following can now be stated.
1—Alyce (spelled Alyce) Thompson filed in Polk County Florida, on 27 Jun 1975 a Power of Attorney to her brother Arnet Dressler. This is the first indication her maiden name was Dressler.
2-- On 5 June 1975 In Polk County, Florida, Alyce Thompson sold one cemetery plot Lot 216- S1/2 of N1/2 of W1/2 of Block Second Addition of Lake Wales Cemetery, for ten dollars. Family information developed that she had rheumatoid arthritis. It appeares she was selling her assets in preparation of moving back to her childhood home.
3—The Social Security Death Index (on Find-A-Grave) indicated that Alyce Clara Thompson was born 26 Apr 1902, and died May 1978 aged 76, and lived in Momence, Kankakee, IL 60954. Said card was issued in the District of Columbia. Her SS# was 578-07-7522.
4—The 1944 city directory of Kankakee, Illinois showed Alyce was living in Kankakee under the name of Alyce Dressler.
5—The 1930 census of Kankakee County, Bradley Village showed Alyce (spelled Alice) Dressler was living with her parents, was single, and worked in the Service Department of a factory. Her Father worked as a pattern maker in a factory.
6—The 1920 census of Kankakee County, Bourbonnais TWP, Illinois showed Alyce (spelled Alice) Dressler lived with her parents and was employed as a clerk in a “Fam. Factory.” Her father worked in an “Imp. Factory,” or Inp. Factory.
7-- The IGI stated William Dressler was born 09 Nov 1877 in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.
His father was Gottlieb Dressler.
His mother was Julia Kramer.
1880 Wisconsin Census in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, Wisconsin:
Godlieb DRESSLER Self M Male W 48 PRUSSIA Carpenter PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (Gottlieb)
Julia DRESSLER Wife M Female W 37 PRUSSIA PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (Kramer)
Alvin DRESSLER Son S Male W 13 PRUSSIA Carpenter PRUSSIA PRUSSIA
Bertarat DRESSLER Son S Male W 11 WI PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (Bert)
Willie DRESSLER Son S Male W 2 WI PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (William)
Edah DRESSLER Dau S Female W 9 WI PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (Ida)
Emma DRESSLER Dau S Female W 5 WI PRUSSIA PRUSSIA (Emilie)
Cemetery records indicate that William Dressler and his wife Amelia Dresler were buried in Kankakee Memorial Cemetery in Illinois. William died on 12 Dec 1945; Amelia T. (Marenhardt) died on 30 Oct 1939.
8—The 1910 census of Kankakee County, Bourbonnais TWP, Illinois showed Alyce (spelled Alice) lived with her parent as a child.
9—On 2 January 1949, Neil Thompson died at age 43 in USNH, Corona, California. He had a wife named Alyce (spelled Alyce) D. His SS# 527 28 4798. The “D” apparently stood for the first letter of her maiden name (Dressler). Alyce moved to Florida some time after the death of Neil in 1949. Her brother Arnet, also lived in Florida at some time after 1930.
10-- The first year that Alyce appears in the Lake Wales city directories was 1959. She bought a house in that city in 1959. In the city directory in 1970 she was listed as Thompson, Alyce C., Wid. of Neil, at Thompson Manor Rms. & Apts., 628 Hesperides Rd. She had fine furniture. She also owned and played a piano. She therefore arrived in Florida after January 1949 and on or before 1954.
11—Neil Thompson left the service after WWII on 3 February 1943 in Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
12—The 1930 census of La Plata County, Colorado, in the San Juan National Forest, stated Neil Thompson was an unmarried labor.
13—Neil Thompson lived in Yuma, Arizona before moving to California ca. May 1947. He lived in Yuma for an unknown time period after his discharge in 1943 to ca. May 1947.
14—It’s reasonable to assume that Neil married Alyce between 1944 and May 1947 in Illinois or in a nearby state. It’s unknown where Neil met Alyce or married her. No record has been found in Kankakee county, Ill, nor in Massachusetts, nor New Hampshire, nor Yuma AZ nor in California. They may have married in another county of Illinois or in the District of Columbia or in Florida. It’s unknown why or when Alyce was in D.C. to obtain her SS card. The cemetery where Alyce was buried in not known. It‘s possible that Alyce married in another state after 12 Dec 1945 after her father died. Her obituary, death certificate, marriage record and birth are being ordered.
Where did Neil met Alyce after WWII between 1943 and 1947?
He was in MA and she in IL ca. 1943. They were married by 1947 in D.C.?
End of brief of record: 26 March 2009
