Hi,
I recently discovered that my GGrandfather's sister relocated to Connecticut and was wondering if anyone knows of any on-line sites to search for Marriages or Obituaries? Her birth name was Katherine McEnerney. Her first marriage was in Staten Island, New York to Andrew or Arthur Chambers. Her second marriage was to William Palmer between 1915 and 1920. I believe he was from Connecticut and she moved there with him. Her married daughter, Catherine Mitten and grandson, Ellsworth Mitten moved there with them also. As far as I can tell they lived in New London, Tolland and Hartford. According to the 1940 Census they were all still alive in 1940 in Andover, Tolland but I can't find anything after that. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Pat

Re: should be Barnabus PHELPS

I realize that this post was made 11 years ago (!) but I don't know if you've already found the answers you sought.

There was a Barnabus Phelps born in Connecticut in 1806 to Theodore and Charlotte Phelps, and he may be the same Barnabus of which you ask. The Phelpses were a long and illustrious Connecticut family; Theodore's 4th great-grandfather, William Phelps (1599-1672) helped found Windsor, CT (and Dorchester, MA), and the Phelpses were prominent in Hartford and its environs for the next couple of centuries. Theodore and Charlotte moved to Brown County, Kansas. I have no idea when Theodore died.

I'm Theodore and Charlotte's 5th great-grandson through their daughter Lois, who married Nicholas Preble Sprague. I'd love to find out what you might know about the family -- particularly Charlotte's maiden name, which I've heard to be "Cofften", but I suspect is slightly misspelled. Please feel free to contact me directly at rch427 at yahoo d0t c0m.

Thanks --

Robert

Thanks:
Never thought of the horse farms. Both my maternal grandparents were supposed to be farmers and they left Poland because someone else inherited the farm but farmers do more than feed cities (gas tanks unfortunately) but horses. Subject never came up with them.
Told you my maternal grandmother Ludwika claimed before she died that she was jewish so that would make me jewish through her daughter Sophie , my mother.
Found this business directory from Kolbuszowa Dolna 1929. Notice the tailor who spelled name Karkul but errors happen. Businesses were jewish and wife said that both my mother and grandmother could sew clothes make clothes "without a pattern". I really want to know. you are related biologically though aren't you? I thought that grandma (Berte) was your mum so you and mom are half brother and sister? Either way - you're still my uncle freddy. And I do remember you! I just know that throught the years mom just wouldn't say anything much about her upbringing - she still gets very defensive. As i said - I am not judging...I just want to know. Hugs!

Angela,

Yes Ma'am it is me. I truly understand how you feel and why. I looked for over forty years to find my family and had a tough time of it as Reba Clark was the only person who knew who they were and she died before telling me. My fault, Carey saw one afternoon in Old Saybrook and informed me Reba wanted to get this off her chest and not take it to her grave but I was uncomfortable at that time with actually finding out. So I spent a lot of time and shed many tears trying to find out who and what I am.
People will keep secrets and by doing so ultimately hurt the people they are trying to protect.
I will stay in touch and look forward to sharing some fun stuff with you about your father and his brother over in Haddam Connecticut.
Respectfully,
Uncle Fritz?
Sharon:
Think of the work youre about to do like a cold case file and it's your job to find who dunnit.

My grandparents were from Kobuszowa in eastern Poland with a major city Rzeszow about 20 miles away. Kolbuszowa was a jewish shtetl of 9000 people where 50% were jews. Towns nearby were Przylek and Mielec whereas Jarocin was about 250 miles away. Only places that I had Karkut hits. I have the film numbers from family search (see below) for Kolbuszowa so you can as i will rent them.

Don't worry about speaking Polish: only necessary?? if you visit Poland. Lots of stuff from archives are in Polish but google tools will do the translation.
BTW familysearch.org is another tool that is run by the Mormons who spent years microfilming church records so they should be available from familysearch. once you know the town, documents should and may be available as microfilm and they are sent to the nearest LDS familysearch center when you rent them so you can browse to your heart's content.
HAve to know where Kataryzna Karkut was born. Sounds hard but ships registry of the voyage to north america tell a lot. Such as the town where they came from( sometimes) AGE who paid identifies relationship and where they're going and sometimes a relative or husband or wife at the destination. You'll never not fully read the ships register. If you're lucky you'll find more than 1 person travelling. So then you concentrate on the town they're moving to.
By the way the best document I've found is a marrriage certificate (long form) because it shows the name of the bride and grrom's parents as well. Will work for documents ordered at the polish cosnulate that are less than 100 years old.

If you check youtube under ancestry, they have some wonderful tips.

Remember its not the destination that important but the voyage to it.
Going to Poland in the fall.
Ted
Hi Ted,
I am still getting used to geneology so I wonder how to access the family trees?
My grandmother was Kataryzna Karkut. I believe she came over when she was about 17, not sure what year, but I think she came with her sister Rose.
The story I always heard was that her family bred horses and traded them here, somewhere in Pennsylvania. Supposedly my grandmother would ride off bareback all through the region. I also believe her mother's last name was Mydlo.
Her first child, a daughter, was named Eugenia, so I wonder if there could be some connection to your Eugene?
I don't have all my info handy right now, but I'd love to follow up on some of this with you. I don't speak Polish, so it's been difficult to get anywhere!
Sharon McNeill
Uncle Freddy!!!??? I have not forgotten! I thought you'd left and really don't know what happened. If this is you, I just can't explain my happiness that you are you!!! Sounds silly but I just can't explain it all. I AM interested in keeping in contact with you. And would truly appreciate any family information you can send me. I am working on geneology for me. My mom (Mary) just only recently started telling me some things about her younger life...just today we spoke of the Hyman relation, etc. She just never would speak of it. Larry, does live in grandma's home in Neb. He shares some things but between him and mom it's like trying to - well - it's just hard to get anything and I don't care - I am not judging...it's life...I just want to know.I just started to reconnect with my father a few years back (Tom Maly). As I am getting older I just want to know who I am and make connections with my family. If it is you, you will see i found you on Face book and requested you as a friend. I am so happy!! Please, if you don't want to friend me it's ok..but please, feel free to look at my pics.. I have two daughters - Paige and Haley. Paige just graduated yesterday from high school. Looking forward to reconnecting...
:) Angela Hope Maly McElwain

Hello Angela,
You know me but like the rest of the family have forgotten. I feel Mary Louise should have all of this information as she took all the memorabilia of our family after Bertha and her last husband died. Bertha's grandson Larry Maly has all that was left of their home and possessions in Orleans Nebraska . Mary Louise lives in the Virginia's somewhere. I lost track of her years ago.

Google- Lieutenant Friedrich VonDeitsch- to learn who I am and if you are still willing to communicate, I will help you as much as I am able.

Respectfully,
Lieutenant Friedrich VonDeitsch

Yes! Thank you very much. I have been looking for a very long for information on my family line. Bertha was my grandmother and Joseph my grandfather. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated and any pictures would be wonderful. I know that my Grandfather had done some research and had pictures but there had been a fire and he lost his home.
Are you related to Joseph Sr? I recall my uncle buddy very fondly as well.
Again, thank you so kindly I am very excited about your response.

Kindly,
Angela Maly McElwain

Do you know his middle name, many times they used their middle names when they came here. If you didn't find as WWI draft record with this name, I would bet he had a different first name which would be on records.

Let me know if I can help,

jane

Would anyone have a specific marriage date and exact dates of death for Michael F Kelly and Elizabeth Quigley? Michael and Elizabeth met while both were employed by Thomas Kelly, a renown baker in the greater Waterbury, CT area. They were married sometime between 1905 and 1906. They made their residence at Pleasant Street in Waterbury, CT. Elizabeth Quigley Kelly died sometime between late 1917 and early 1920. Michael F Kelly died around 1925.

I am especially interested in learning about Michael F Kelly's relationship to Thomas Kelly. There were other Kellys , who were employed by Thomas Kelly. I'm assuming that they were his nieces and nephews.

My great-great grandmother was Margaret Cosgrove. Her middle name might have been Josephine. She married Cornelius Corcoran from Glen Mills, PA. I am trying to learn whatever I can about her. I know from the baptism records of her children that many of her family members were sponsors. Some of those names include: Michael, Johanna, Thomas, Ann, Eugene, Margaret. They were all sponsors of either - one of Margaret Cosgrove Corcoran's children - or one of her grandchildren. All the baptisms took place at St. Agnes Church, in West Chester, PA.

Hi, I am a native of Thompson, CT. The correct spelling of the village is Grosvenordale. Also, the neighboring village is North Grosvenordale. There are several other villages within the town.
Actually, Thompson is not that big a town, so one can usually browse the census and find your family. Not only is the town name often mis-spelled, but the family names are as well so to me the easiest way in the long run is to read the census.
Regards, Ginny
I have few relatives from that city too; however, I found the person writing the census didn't spell the city correctly. For instance in one family there was one person born in "Grovendale" and their sibling was born in "Grosvenordale" so I assume it's the same place. In CT there is a village, North Grosvernor Dale, which is in the town Thompson. It is known for the historic mill district. It's fairly close to the Rhode Island border. Hope that helps!

Those records are accessible through the Connecticut Office of Vital Records (http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3132&q=388130). There's no index for this period, so you may have to file a records request.

Possible Connecticut Marriage

Does anyone have access to searching the Connecticut marriage records? I am trying to locate the marriage certificate for my great grandparents. They lived in New York in the early 1900's. We have searched all the New York records without any results. We have heard through the family that they may have been in Connecticut. The marriage would have been between 1904 - 1910. Their names were Joseph Iannuzzi (B. 1885) and Philomena Hautamaki (B. 1882). I have looked on ancestry.com and familysearch.org without any luck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I am married to the oldest one, Ed Bagdonas. We have two children: Alex,23 and Annisya, 20. I would like them to learn more about their Lithuanian ancestors. They don't even have a picture of Longinas and Placidas Bagdonas (their great grandparents). I am glad we found you.

Hi,
The changing of the Bagdonas to Bagdon was done by many Bagdonas families because many Lithuian's being Jewish were fearful of the family members so they changed their names to protect them from being murdered by the Germans. I am still un aware how we are related? I am related to Joseph Bagdonas, who lived in Athol.Joseph was my grandfathers brother.
