I am at a complete road block when it comes to my 2nd great grandfather on my fathers side. According to the family bible his name was William Burkett Allen. However, I have found quite a few notes that show he may be listed as William C Allen or WM Allen. I know he was married to Charlotte V McGarr. If anyone could get me info I would greatly appreciate it, as I cannot get further back in the tree than this. His children were; Alonzo Lee Allen, George Washington Allen, Billy Allen, Luther Allen and Thomas Floyd Allen. Thank you.

Hi Dennis,
The Fox family is actually my wife's family. Her mother was Mae Louise Fox b. in San Angelo, TX. I know very little about the Fox family and my wife is not interested to know, so I really have not put forth much effort. Sorry! I am going to try to get started in my research in this new year, so I might find something. I'll let you know in the event I do.

Regards,

Jerry Sanders
San Antonio, TX

Hi Ken,
I will have to look at copies of papers from about 15 years ago. I think this is fron a book about families of Guilford.
The biggest hurdle was figuring out that Mary being first married to John Evarts Jr meant the younger John Evarts in town. This one "John Jr." was son of Daniel and brother of James (sister Anna Bowe's husband). Daniel had a brother John Jr. in town so they must have distinguished between the two John's by calling them senior and junior when they were both alive. The way the books have arranged it makes no sense at all, because they assumed John Jr. meant the son of John in all cases, and it made it look like Mary married someone 30 years older. I'll do a printout for anyone who asks....

I have many more generations than in this list.
Anyway here is how I put the data together.

Descendants of Mary Bowe

1 Mary Bowe	b: December 05, 1676 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: March 21, 1737/38 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut
.. +John Evarts	b: September 20, 1669 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	m: Aft. 1696	d: 1699 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	Father: Daniel Evarts	Mother: Rebecca Dowd
*2nd Husband of Mary Bowe:
.. +Shubael Shelley	b: April 25, 1674 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	m: February 17, 1703/04 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	d: April 1727	Father: Robert Shelley, Jr.
..	2 Ebenezer Shelley	b: January 12, 1704/05 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut d: May 09, 1797 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut
...... +Comfort Everet m: August 05, 1730	d: September 26, 1743
..	2 Robert Shelley	b: November 18, 1706 d: January 11, 1788
...... +Sarah Bartlett	b: July 22, 1717 d: February 14, 1790
..	2 John Shelley	b: February 04, 1709/10 d: August 21, 1751
...... +Jerusha Leete	b: November 14, 1711	m: January 16, 1730/31	d: July 08, 1763
..	2 Samuel Shelley	b: December 10, 1712 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut d: May 21, 1746 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut
...... +Sarah Hitt	b: July 12, 1715 in Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut	m: October 19, 1737 in Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut
..	2 Reuben Shelley	b: July 30, 1720 d: September 15, 1794
...... +Submit Johnson	b: December 16, 1728	m: March 24, 1751/52
Also, any other source that addresses Shubael's existence. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.

There is a first rate sketch of Thomas Stow on the Society of Middletown First Settlers website http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctsmfsd/

Click on members area and then look at the sketches of first settlers.

I've never done a DAR application, but I suspect your problem will be in documenting the later generations, not these first ones. But, at any rate this sketch will give you some very good sources.

If you are descended from Thomas through his son Samuel, you would certainly be eligible for membership in the Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants.

I just stumbled across this particular thread by accident (the first time I'v visited here) so you will need to contact me directly if you have further questions

I think if you click on my name it will allow you to send me a message.

Hal Whitmore

Hal Whitmore

Parents of Eleazer Veazie m Mary Markham Jan 20 1745/6 Middletown

Seek further info or hints regarding parents of Eleazer Veazie (pick your spelling) who married Mary Markham 1745/6, and had 2 children in Windham and/or Middletown 1746/7 and 1748 per Middletown, Windham and Willington VR.

Eleazer Veazie, s of Eleazer & Lydia Neale, Braintree, MA, b Nov 26, 1714 in Braintree, MA. Married Ann Gulliver there. Appears in Massachusetts town and court records in and before 1742. In 1742, a court case was postponed because he was "out of province." Reappears in Plymouth MA court for a settlement in 1750. No probate in Suffolk or Plymouth (MA) counties. No further info on lifespans of Eleazer or Ann Gulliver.

Encyclopedia of Connecticut Biography (amongst the Sears genealogy) states that Eleazer of Braintree, after his wife Ann Gulliver died, went to Connecticut and was the Eleazer mentioned in Middletown records. No references.

Nothing so far conflicts with the timing for Eleazer to leave MA, go to CT, marry and have children, and be back in MA.

Does anyone have further info or hints that might confirm/deny that Eleazer of Braintree was Eleazer of Middletown?
Thanks for the reply back.

With help from others, I found a book "A Genealogy of the Descendants of John May who came from England to Roxbury in America 1640". On page 89, the book shows a Nancy and Clarissa (sisters and daughters of Edward Selden and Sibyl May) both married to Thayers that lived in Palmyra, NY. This has to be the twins, Joel and Levi. That same page also shows Levi Thayer from Palmyra, married to Elizabeth Selden daughter of David Selden and Cynthia May (cousins of Nancy and Clarissa). Cynthia and Sibyl May were sisters and daughters of Eleazer May and Sibyl Huntington.

The Memorial of the Thayer name: from the Massachusetts colony of Weymouth and ... By Bezaleel Thayer, books shows Levi Thayer married to both Clarissa and Elizabeth (after Clarissa's death) and Joel Thayer married to Nancy Fuller Selden.

So I think I finally knocked down my brick wall, with lots of help.

Thanks,
Jon

Jon, According to the Connecticut vitals that I have got, the Levi Thayer you are talking about was married to Elizabeth Selden, they married October 22,1832 and this Levi was from Chatham,CT Both of these guys were from Palmyra,NY and there is no record of either one of them being born in CT, I'm not saying that they weren't born in CT just that there is no record of them born there, so where did you get your info from ??

Howard Minch
Keene,NH

cadillac@ne.rr.com

I'm looking for the parents of Nancy Selden (b. 7/10/1790 Hudson MA, d. 2/27/1866 Buffalo, NY). She married Joel Thayer (b. 5/19/1782 d. 1/28/1853) 9/30/1823 Windsor Ct. I believe they lived in Palmyra NY. Joel is the son of Capt. Levi Thayer & Hannah Parkhurst.

I believe her name should be spelled Selden because that is the middle name of one of her sons Edward Selden Thayer, plus it has been passed down the generations like that. There is a Thayer genealogy book written that has it recorded as Seldon.

I found a book (Proceedings By New England Society in the City of Brooklyn, Jan. 1881) that describes one of her sons Nathan Thayer in which it says -

"Mr. Thayer's mother belonged to the well-known old New England family, the Seldens of Haddam Neck, Conn. The Seldens held a re-union at Saybrook, Conn., several years ago, and it was attended by not a few of our well known men. They claim among their ancestors, John Selden of high literary fame, and such names as those of Chief Justice Waite, Judge Henry R. Selden of Rochester, N. Y., Dr. William Selden of Norfolk, Va., and the late President Nott of Union College, swell the list of distinguished men."

She may be related to a Clarrisa Selden (b. 1787 d. 1830 Palmyra, NY) because they were born around the same time, lived in the same area and Clarrisa married a Levi Thayer son of Capt. Levi Thayer (Joel's twin brother).

Thanks,

Jon Ugelstad

Would like to know if he is related to the George Dix born CT 1796 who appears in the Uxbridge, MA 1830 Census. This George Dix married
Deborah Knowlton and later Sophronia Hatch. He died in Fall river, MA in 1855. I have been unable to determine George's parents or place of birth.

Karen,

My understanding is that John W. Harrison was killed in the Civil War on September 16, 1862 at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) after serving for approximately one month. Have you ever written to the Federal Archives to see if his widow applied for a pension? I believe his wife’s name was Maria (last name unknown to me).
A friend of mine is searching for information on this John W. Harrison too.
Is there more information that we can exchange?
My e-mail address is echesney@stratos.net
Thanks,

Ed,
I am looking for information on Charlotte Roberts Alling Born in CT Apr. 9, 1811. She Married Edmund Alling Born Ct 1807 and moved to Trumbull County Ohio around 1833. They died Hand-in-Hand of two different ailments on March 10, 1896. I have not been able to find her parentage. The only clue I may have is that her husband Edmund was the executor of a propert belonging to a Seabury Roberts who also died in Ohio. Beyond that I have no other clues to go by. I was wondering if any one had a Roberts of Connecticut history that may include Charlotte.

I'm trying to document any descendants of Alexander Bowe, and think it's time to have an active presence in the society. Alexander was admitted to Middletown in 1660, formerly from Charlestown, Mass.
The abundance of information about him and the first few generations is very fortunate for us.
I found the tombstone of Edward Bowe my ancestor in the Old Farm Hill cemetery. He is a great grandson of Alexander.
Also Found his mother Anna Prior Bowe who married 2nd William Ward (but have not been able to determine which William Ward this was.)
I invite anyone interested in this family to contact me.

Descendants of Alexander Bowe

1 Alexander Bowe	b: Abt. 1633 in England d: November 06, 1678 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
.. +Sarah	b: Abt. 1637 d: April 16, 1665 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
..	2 Samuel Bow/Bowe	b: January 28, 1659/60 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: January 15, 1741/42 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
...... +Mary Turner	b: November 05, 1665 in Milford, Connecticut	m: May 09, 1683 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	d: April 25, 1747 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: Edward Turner	Mother: Mary Sanford
..	2 Sarah Bow/Bowe	b: June 20, 1662
...... +Jonathan Deming, Jr.	b: November 27, 1661	m: October 27, 1687 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut Father: Jonathan Deming	Mother: Sarah Graves
..	2 Mary Bow/Bowe	b: January 18, 1663/64 d: May 16, 1665
*2nd Wife of Alexander Bowe:
.. +Rebecca Hughes	b: 1657	m: November 26, 1673 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	d: December 04, 1683 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: Richard Hughes	Mother: Mary
..	2 Anna Bow/Bowe	b: September 10, 1674 d: Bef. 1728
...... +James Evarts	b: February 18, 1671/72 d: April 06, 1750	Father: Daniel Evarts	Mother: Rebecca Dowd
..	2 Mary Bow/Bowe	b: December 05, 1676 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: March 21, 1737/38 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut
...... +John Evarts, Jr.	b: February 29, 1639/40 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts d: December 28, 1692 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	Father: John Evarts	Mother: Elizabeth
.. *2nd Husband of Mary Bow/Bowe:
...... +Shubael Shelley	b: April 25, 1674 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	m: February 17, 1703/04 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut	d: April 1727	Father: Robert Shelley, Jr.
..	2 Rebeckah Bow/Bowe	b: May 19, 1679 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: January 29, 1715/16 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
...... +Thomas Stow	b: April 10, 1674	m: February 28, 1700/01 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	d: January 23, 1765 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: John Stow	Mother: Mary Wetmore/Whitmore

----------------------------------------------------------
Descendants of Samuel Bow/Bowe

1 Samuel Bow/Bowe	b: January 28, 1659/60 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: January 15, 1741/42 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
.. +Mary Turner	b: November 05, 1665 in Milford, Connecticut	m: May 09, 1683 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	d: April 25, 1747 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: Edward Turner	Mother: Mary Sanford
..	2 Sarah Bow/Bowe	b: March 27, 1684 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: May 11, 1684
..	2 Samuel Bow/Bowe, Jr.	b: June 15, 1685 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut d: December 21, 1775 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
...... +Abigail Rowley	b: February 10, 1685/86 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut	m: April 14, 1710 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	d: October 07, 1713 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: Thomas Rowley	Mother: Mary Denslow
.. *2nd Wife of Samuel Bow/Bowe, Jr.:
...... +Hannah West	b: May 24, 1693 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	m: October 07, 1714	d: January 05, 1756 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut	Father: Benjamin West	Mother: Hannah West
..	2 Mary Bow/Bowe	b: February 03, 1686/87 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut
...... +Arthur Davis	b: Abt. 1688	m: Abt. 1710
.. *2nd Husband of Mary Bow/Bowe:
...... +John (Capt.)
I really do not know a great deal other then my how ever many greats back grandfather and his brother served in the 13th and I believe they saw action at the battle of New York on Long Island. I do have copies of their discharges and travel vouchers. My grandfather was a private and his brother a Sgt. Length of service appeared to be 30 days. I have tried to figure out what units they were connected with or attached to.

Ken Wedge

Rick,

I am replying for Sharon Crevier. We are both researching the Hodge family, and I think possibly the same family as yours. Here is the information I have, but there are some assumptions here:

William W. and Russell Ray Hodge (brothers) are listed in the 1875 census for Olmstead County, MN on the same page. William died on 07 Jul 1883 in Farm Hill, Olmstead, Minnesota (near Rochester). He was born in Otisco, Onondaga County, 2/5/1826 and was married to a Mary M. Feller (maybe Teller), who was born in Cayuga, County, New York 6/25/1830. Russell Hodge, my gg grandfather, was born in Onondaga County NY (I don’t know what city) on 29 Feb 1816. He married a Mary Cunningham (she had a sister Ann) and they all were living in Oswego in 1850. Russell may have lived in Skaneateles about 1830 (as a Russell is listed as living there in the 1830 NY Census along with a Darius Hodge). Russell and Mary's children were Charles, Lucy, John and Irvine (my great grandfather). Irvine, my great grandfather, worked for the newspaper in Oswego, Oswego, NY, was an editor for the Rochester, MN Post and also the Kankakee Daily Journal in Illinois, so I have newspaper records of various trips, births and deaths in the family from about 1880 to 1941 when he died. It says in the 1875 Olmstead County, MN census that the father of William and Russell was born in (or came from) NH and since Russell and William were born in Onondaga County New York, I assume their father moved from NH to that county.

This is all that I have on the ancestry of this family. I once thought that he could be the son of Isaac Hodges Jr., because Isaac had a son born in 1805 named Russell, but the birth date doesn't fit and Isaac would have been terribly old to have William and no William is listed. They also may have had the father of Darius (also lived in Skaneateles about 1830. I have not been able to determine the father of William and Russell to this date.

Odd. I have that book, from Harvard Divinity School. Only the first few sentences in your post are from it. Perhaps you did not notice the other "sources" like Encarta and Microsoft in the latter part of your text. There is no genealogy in Updike, and certainly no mention of Bearce.

Request to Meet with Cousins--Mar 29-31--Descendant Visiting Middletown

Hello,

My name is Kristin Rivers and I am planning a trip from Saturday, March 29th to Monday, March 31st to visit Middletown and Lebanon to research my family history. I have quite a few ancestors who were either born, married and/or died in these two towns (listed below) and so I am planning to visit cemeteries, libraries and any historical societies and/or museums that may be open at that time.

Donna from the Middlesex County Historical Society has agreed to meet with me from 9am-1pm on Sunday. Is there anyone else who would like to get together to discuss this amazing place and its people Sat evening, Sunday (after my meeting with Donna) and/or Monday morning?!

I am so excited because as a public school teacher with three children living in San Jose, CA, I would not have anticipated being able to make this trip but my school district is sending me to a teaching conference in New York City beginning on Monday, March 31st and I was able to convince the district to allow me to fly in early and pay for my own room and board in order to make the side trip up to Connecticut!

So, I am flying in late Friday night and will arrive at the Newark Airport early Saturday morning. I'm planning to rent a car and drive up to your area that morning. So, I was hoping that you would please suggest where I should go while I'm there. I have listed out the names and their connections to the two towns hoping that you may have access to cemetery/birth and/or marriage records that might help point me in the right direction to learn as much about my ancestors as I can in the short time that I'll have there. Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you feel could help. Thank you! And if you ever need anything from San Jose, CA. You know who to ask!! :-)

My Lebanon & Middletown Direct Ancestors:
David BLISS (my 5th great grandfather) b. 1769 in Lebanon
Elizabeth BLISS (my 4th great grandmother) b. 21 Oct 1798 in Lebanon
Israel BLISS (my 6th great grandfather) b. 17 Apr 1739 in Lebanon
John BLISS (my 7th great grandfather) m. 21 Feb 1719 in Lebanon
John BLISS (my 8th great grandfather) d. 20 Sep 1747 in Lebanon
Elizabeth JOHNSON (my 5th great grandmother) m. 24 Feb 1796 in Lebanon
Mary STILES (my 6th great grandmother) b. 28 Apr 1735 in Lebanon
Hannah TICKNOR (my 7th great grandmother) m. 21 Feb 1719 in Lebanon

Mary ANTHONY (my 10th great grandmother) d. 30 Mar 1691 in Middletown
Elizabeth BLAKE (my 8th great grandmother) b. 16 Mar 1679 and d. 25 Jan 1698 in Middletown
John BLAKE (my 9th great grandfather) d. 11 Nov 1690 in Middletown
Mary COLLINS (my 9th great grandmother) b. 11 May 1666 in Middletown
Nathaniel COLLINS (my 10th great grandfather) m. 3 Aug 1664 in Middletown
Hesther CROW (my 10th great grandmother) m. 23 Aug 1700 in Middletown
John HALL (my 11th great grandfather) m. 26 May 1673 in Middletown
Richard HALL (my 10th great grandfather) m. 27 Mar 1691 in Middletown
Sarah HALL (my 9th great grandmother) b. 16 May 1654 in Middletown
Giles HAMLIN (my 10th great grandfather) b. 1622 in Middletown
John HAMLIN (my 9th great grandfather) b. 14 Dec 1658 in Middletown
John HAMLIN (my 8th great grandfather) b. 16 Jul 1687 in Middletown
Mahitabell HAMLIN (my 7th great grandmother) b. 6 Feb 1710 in Middletown
Daniel HARRIS (my 10th great grandfather) d. 30 Nov 1701 in Middletown
Mary HARRIS (my 9th great grandmother) d. 1 Aug 1740 in Middletown
Isaac JOHNSON (my 9th great grandfather) d. 3 Feb 1719 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 6th great grandfather) b. 21 May 1726 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 7th great grandfather) b. 26 Aug 1702 in Middletown
Joseph JOHNSON (my 8th great grandfather) b. 9 Mar 1677 in Middletown
Mary ROGERS (my 6th great grandmother) m. 14 Aug 1746 in Middletown
Mary WELD (my 10th great grandmother) d. 5 Sep 1711 in Middletown
Mary WHITING (my 10th great grandmother) m. 3 Aug 1664 and d. 25 Oct 1709 in Middletown

Thank you, again,
Kristin

You have listed a Russell Hodges born in 1824. I have a Russell Hodge/s born in Onondaga county, NY on 29 Feb. 1816 and m. (I believe first Lucy Smith) and 2nd Mary Cunningham. I believe he possibly might have been the son of Isaac Hodges Jr. and Anna Carey. He had children of Charles, Lucy, Irving and John and he died in Kankakee, Illionis on 12 Mar. 1881. His name Russell might have come from his great grandmother's Abigail (Russell) Hodges maiden name. He is my GG Grandfather. I am trying to prove his father and mother. There was a Russell and Darius Hodge listed in the 1830 census of Skaneateles, Onondaga, NY. Does this fit the picture of part of your family?
