What Curtiss family was Curtiss Pond named after in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut?

Killingly, CT land record in vol. 1, page 62a gives the following land record dated 3 Nov 1712; Nicholas Mighill of Killingly, for 60 pds., sells to Robert Burch of Mendon, Mass., land near Curtiss Pond."

Looking for parents of Thomas Curtiss.
I have Lodecianna Cady, dau. of Nahum Cady who married Thomas Curtiss. Lodecianna was of Brooklyn, and Pomfret, CT. They had a son Norman Curtiss b. 1794 who lived in Killingly. Trying to determine if the family of Thomas was originally from this area? Thank you for any help.

Joseph also fought in the revolutionary war.

I think the decendancy order will be Joseph, John, Edward, and Elizabeth although I am not postive.

Please contact me via this board or by email at shayne@thedudleyclan,.com

Ahhh, I had suspected missing records regarding the 1910 Census so I guess I should have thought of that but I did not. Perhaps there was a disclaimer on ctgenweb.org I missed about it being incomplete for vital records in the 1700s because not all records survived or all births recorded or whatever the reason is.

I did not use Probate and land records or even think to do this. Thanks for the suggestion, which is in line with my Ancestry booklet I received and never got around to reading until last night.

It's not genweb that is incomplete...it is the vital records. Windham County has all the Barbour records online. Not every vital event was recorded. So, you have to go at it sideways. Try to find a probate record for Cynthia's suspected father. Occasionally, I find a familial reference in land records. Sometimes, you have to be very creative.

You are right about "consort" meaning "wife." I had thought a consort was something on the side, or an accepted concubine.

I am aware of the link and saw some children there, not seven. Even more curious, I could not find a death line for Cynthia anywhere, even trying to pull it out of the Web site with Google Advanced Search. If her husband survived her per the article, she would have been recorded as Cynthia Staples. Oddly, I could not find a death line for Abel Staples either.

On the 1790 Census for Brooklyn in the household of Abel Staples there was one male age 16+ (Abel), 4 males under 16 (Amos, Nathaniel, two unknowns) and 3 females of all ages (Cynthia, Annie, Lucy), so by 1790, we are already short two male members. So I agree ctgenweb.org is good, but it is incomplete and confusing for people with common names. Fortuantely, Abel, Cynthia and Staples were all uncommon in the area and era.

I am finding part of this notice on the Internet but am not seeing enough to be absolutely sure, plus the public family trees on this site are all in opposition. Did she die 25 Dec 1797 at age 38 in Canterbury as the wife (some hint of the word "consort") of Abel Staples? If this is the same notice she left behind "a husband, seven children and aged parents. . . ." Does anyone know who her husband, parents and her children are?

Since the death date is so different than those in the public trees, I don't trust adding those parents without good reason.

The will was written 3 July 1786 and presented for probate 1 Aug 1786. On the will and probate records in that file there is no death date listed. However, according to a DAR Membership Application for Linda Sue Reynolds dated Nov. 6, 1978, Jan. 29, 1979 and Feb. 2, 1979, she states Jacob's death date was July 7, 1786. I'm not sure just where she found that death date, but based on the date his will was written and the date it was presented to the court for probate, he had to have died in July 1786

Thanks for the reference! I have traced myself to the Reynolds through my ggg grandmother, Celinda Brown Reynolds. Through a couple of family histories and Celinda's death record, I believe her parents were James Reynolds (b. 1787) and Sarah Brown. New England families says James (b. 1787) is the son of James Reynolds (b. 1754 Corporal James Reynolds of West Gloucester married to Mary Davis.), son of JAMES Reynolds of Killingly, CT. The DAR application that I have says that James Reynolds (b. 1787) was the son of Sargeant James Reynolds and Mary Davis Reynolds, son of JACOB and Martha Reynolds. Pension records for Sargeant James Reynolds list father Jacob, wife Mary Davis, and son Owen. I hope I got that straight! Anyway, I have had difficulty finding primary sources to document this line.
Any other information you have would be wonderful, and I would be glad to share what I have.

OOPS! My mistake! I double checked my files after answering your message and discovered that, yes, I did find the probate record. It was LDS film #1027452, Connecticut Probate Records, Pomfret District. It is, however, a terrible copy. He left legacies to his wife, Martha the use of his real estate for 5 years, plus one third of his real estate, and the household furnishings and one cow. To daughter Phebe 5 shillings, to son James 5 shillings, to son Jacob 5 shillings, to daughter Sibbel Clark 5 shillings, to daughter Lurana Southard 5 shillings, all to be paid within one year. To son Squire 5 shillings at age 21, to son Obadiah one third of the real estate, to son sullivan one third of the real estate, to daughters Martha and Lucy 5 shillings each at age 18. His inventory was valued at 105 pounds.

There is another un-named small cemetery in Plainfield, CT. If you look at an overhead map Tarbox Road, Lillibridge Road and RT 12 that meets them, the cemetery is somewhat in the center, just outside the perimeter of the old drive-in theater that used to be inside that circle. There are about 10-15 stone there. I moved out of CT a few years ago and haven't been back there in over 15 years. It would be a miracle if those stone were still standing. I know the outer wall was broken and some stones were damaged or sunken. As I recall, some stones were significantly large, 3 feet or more. tall. Hope this helps. I can use a google map to get a more accurate location if you need.

Just saw your post in the Ancestry.com message boards. I don't believe that the Cozzens in Windham CT were Native American especially associated with Joseph Tucker IV. He married Nancy Chaffee who was thought to be Nancy Cozzens but was not. She had an illegitimate son named John Cozzens who Joseph Tucker raised. I believe the father was a Charles Cozzens.

I have quite a bit of info if you're interested in that direction

Dave Hayden

If you ever run across a Ephriam F. or Ephriam Frederick, with a surname spelled even close to Simar or Simon (Simons), please let me know, I'm refering to the time period of 1785 to 1820, they could have been in New Jersey, New York, or Connecticut , during that time period, in 1825, they are listed in a local census in Wells Township Pennsylvania, and from then on it (the surname) is usually spelled as we know it today (Simar). .

I have not ruled out the possibility that our surname, as we know it today, (Simar) was not Simon or Simons, when my G G Grandfather came to America, I found an early census, I think it was 1800, that showed it spelled either Simmon or Simon, but later census records have it spelled Simar. .

They moved to Ma. sometime before 1900.
Walter was born 1860 and Isabel was born either 1884 per 1900 census or 1874 per her death certificate. It also references near Thompson Station. Years later, a relative lived on Sand Dam Road, so I am wondering if it is close by or if the name changed from Gay Road/RFD#2 to Sand Dam Road.

Hopefully someone who reads your post can get the marriage record for you, otherwise you can contact the Killingly Town Clerk where early records are kept for that town. You could also try the Killingly Historical Society. If you know of any children, their birth records might also have their mother's maiden name.

I see that George D. Russell was in the Civil War. His widows name is given as Maria J. Russell, and she applied for a widow's pension in 1891, so could be that this is not your Maria A.
If you can't find Maria A. Fullerton's marriage (or death), you could send for the 1891 pension papers thru The National Archives, which will probably contain their marriage info. I can give you the certificate number and other info you'll need to fill out the application, if you decide to go that route.

I have only recently became aware of my family connection to Cyrus Cartwright, thus, I am just getting started researching the new found family. I previously had been stuck at Sluman & Rebecca Cartwright who migrated to WI. Territory in 1837.
At this point, I am trying to find the proof that the Sluman of 1815 who married Betsy Hunter, is a descendant of Cyrus. I have found much information on this Cartwright family, but not a blood relationship. It appears that Lydia Hunter and Betsy Hunter were probably aunt and niece but that only connects the family through marriage. If the Cartwright blood link can be proven, I have been researching the other Sluman Cartwright for 35 years now and have most of the information. Don
