I have a John Adams born about 1770 who arrived in Monroe, MI about the same time as Stephen Downing born in Canterbury, Windham, CT in 1762. I do not know where John Adams came from or who his parents were. In light of the following Adams-Downing connections, I wonder if John Adams came to Monroe with or because of connections with Stephen Downing:

1. A John Adams and a number of other Adamses served with Stephen Downing in the CT line during the Rev War (see CT Men in the Rev War), p. 6. Perhaps one of these Adamses was the father of my John Adams?

2. Stephen Downing married Alice Adams of Canterbury, daughter of Solomon Adams and Abigail Munroe. No one seems to know much about the male descendants of Solomon and Abigail. Maybe my John Adams was a brother, nephew, or cousin of Alice Adams?

3. Once Stephen Downing and John Adams were in Monroe, their children Miner Downing born about 1799 in Cayuga, NY and Amanda Adams born about 1801 in VT were married and lived near John Adams' son, Asa Adams.
