Here is an extract from a letter I have just come across. Seems there are two errors on the gravestones. The dates of the wives are switched and the dod of Sarah should read 1846. However, until now I did not know of the existence of Sarah.

"Yesterday I went on a visit to the cemetery (in Norwich) as I told you I would. It is said that epitaphs lie. I had no idea that this was so true of inscriptions. Here is an example of what one may find on tombstones. I took a position in front of a marble slab about 5 ft high and 30inches wide ad read this cut deep on its front
Jane Smith 1830 – 1863
Rachel Brown 1819 – 1852
Wives of James Troland
In the rear and in line with this stone there is a little grave with a head and a foot stone and the following inscriptions somewhat aged and weather worn
Sarah E
Daugher of
James and Jane Trolan
Died Oct 13 1816
AE 5 years and 11 mos
The foot stone has the intitals SET
I thought the 1 should be a 4 but it was so close to the 8 and so like the figure at the Oct and also the mos that this seemed impossible. Now what can you make of such a record as that?"
Letter dated Dec 23rd 1912 by John Troland
I'd like to find a book about my friend's hometown, Norwich, for Christmas. The Norwich Historical Society website is very outdated, as is the Rose City Genealogy site, so I need some assistance.

Can anyone familiar with Norwich, CT tell me if there are any nice photographic books showing Norwich in the 1940s and 1950s available for sale? I'd appreciate hearing about any titles that are out there. My friend is the son of the late Dr. Schwarz.

Thanks!

Hello,

Obviously, internet genealogy is an unregulated mess. I've found that erroneous records pop up just because enough beginners have copied that error...many times completely contrary to historical documentation and fact. An example is my 7th Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Hempstead. She's now listed in scores of Lamb family trees & pedigrees as wife of Isaac Lamb, simply because her name was Elizabeth, and she happened to be at the "right place at the right time."

People start a "Family Tree" and just mass copy information from other trees they find on the internet.

Joshua Hempstead in his DIARY makes reference to John and David (once each) and Francis Manwaring Caulkins refers to the family 3 times in her HISTORY OF NEW LONDON.

Chuck Plumb

He was selected Governor of the State of Connecticut upon the death of Governor John Winthrop. He died himself at a young age.

Accounts of his life and death can be found in THE DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD and the HISTORY OF NEW LONDON by Frances Manwaring Caulkins.
Hi,

I looked for the surname in Caulkins HISTORY OF NEW LONDON, and couldn't find it. Joshua Hempstead in his DIARY has 2 entries for the name, but very generic, a reference to "BLACKMAN," and one for "Mrs. BLACKMAN."

This doesn't mean too much; both sources are more localized on the New London, Groton area. Hope you find your information.

Chuck Plumb

Hello,

Isaac Lamb married an "Elizabeth," but her surname has never been determined. Lamb "researchers" who were unable to identify her decided years ago that my 7th Great Grandmother (Elizabeth Hempstead Plumbe, 1672-1733), must have married Isaac Lamb since her name was "Elizabeth" and she lived in New London in the right time frame.

They never bothered to check New London history and documentation, that Elizabeth Hempstead married John Plumbe (1666-1732) in 1689. They just began copying the bad record, (which now exists on Ancestry due to the hundreds of erroneous pedigrees) thus perpetuating the error.

There's never been any doubt that Elizabeth Hempstead married John Plumbe; it's confirmed by every concievable historical record (New London Vital Stats, Town Records, the DIARY OF JOSHUA HEMPSTEAD and many other records), yet hundreds of Lambs have copied this mythical marriage into their trees. As a result they portray themselves as silly and novice.

I'm frustrated (to say the least), but have given up trying to correct the error.

Chuck Plumb

Greetings,

I was able to get my ancestral Plumb, Morgan and Bolles grave pictures at the Ancient Cemetery in New London through a Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteer.

There are also quite a few Find a Grave volunteers in the immediate area. The Ancient Cemetery is the oldest in New London, New London, and lies between Hempstead & Huntington Streets. The New London and Connecticut Historical Societies sponsor events there occasionally. Here are the links for RAOGK and the NLHS, plus a pretty cool site I found online:

http://www.newlondonhistory.org

http://www.raogk.org/listing.htm

http://asylumeclectica.com/asylum/sightseer/us/ct/ancient/in...

Here is an article I found online:

Ye Antientist Burial Ground in New London, Connecticut is one of the earliest graveyards in New England, and the oldest colonial cemetery in New London County. The hillside lot of 1.5 acres adjoins the original site of the settlement's first meeting-house. From here the visitor has a broad view to the east of the Thames River, and on the far shore, the heights of Groton. Reservation of the lot for its purpose had been recorded in the summer of 1645. The first decedent "of mature age" was duly interred there in 1652. But it is the ordinance of June 6, 1653 that legally sets the place apart and declares, "It shall ever bee for a Common Buriall place, and never be impropriated by any." A later record notes the appointment of the sexton — Whose work is to order youth in the meeting-house, sweep the meeting-house, and beat out dogs, for which he is to have 40s. a year : he is also to make all graves ; for a man or woman he is to have 4s., for children, 2s. a grave, to be paid by survivors (Caulkins 1860, p. 111). Seventeenth century New London was yet a rough and isolated corner of early colonial Connecticut. Private internments were not customary, and this was the only common burial place. The dead were brought in from a distance of six or seven miles, either carried in hurdles, or borne on a bier upon men's shoulders; large companies assembling, and relieving each other at convenient distances (Prentis & Caulkins 1899, p. 7). Few of the early graves ever had inscribed markers. The New London of that time possessed no skilled stonecutters, and those early planters simply had not the means. A few surviving families did, however, seek to address the deficiency in later years. At least four stones dated in the 1600s have been found that could not have been placed before 1720 (Slater 1987, p. 221). Otherwise — If the best man in the community was struck down, his companions could do no more to testify their regret, than to lay him reverently in the grave, and seal it with a rude granite ... broken with ponderous mallets from some neighboring ledge and wearily dragged with ropes to the place and laid over the remains to secure them from disturbance, and mark the spot where a brother was buried (Prentis & Caulkins 1899, p. 6). As time wore away the unadorned burial hillocks, the older were, "covered over with fresh deposits of the dead, so that the numbers here cannot be estimated by the evidences that now remain ... Yet here undoubtably [sic] were deposited nearly the whole generation of our first settlers" (Prentis & Caulkins 1899, pp. 5,7).

Good luck,

Chuck Plumb

Seeking Samuel Brown, b. Connecticut circa 1785 to 1795, moved to Quebec, Canada

I am seeking a connection to my g-g-g-grandfather Samuel Brown who was born in Connecticut according to census records of his children, and who immigrated to Stanstead County, Quebec, in the early 19th Century, bought property there, and raised his children in Canada before the children moved to Massachusetts and then to Wisconsin.

Samuel may also have moved to Massachussets circa 1840s along with his sons, or he may have stayed in Canada or, indeed, may already have been deceased. His sons worked in the mills around Lowell, Massachusetts before the sons moved to Wisconsin to get their own homesteads for farming. Samuel and his wife never moved to Wisconsin.

Samuel owned land at The Lakeshore Settlement on Magoon's Point in Stanstead Township, Quebec that he bought in 1831. He may have already been living there and improving the property before buying it or earning it by clearing it. Several of his likely children attended school at Magoon's Point in 1831. The land was sold by Samuel Camber Brown (I suspect this is his son and not him) in 1848 to Amos Albert Brown (likely Samuel Camber Brown's brother).

Samuel's wife’s name was Polly, but I don't know her maiden name. She may have been Polly Camber, if Samuel Camber Brown's name is any indication.

Samuel and Polly had at least four children in Canada:

Samuel Camber Brown (b. 1818 in Stanstead Co. m. Samuel may have also had a brother named Amos who moved to Stanstead, Quebec, Canada concurrently with Samuel's move.

Thank you for your attention to this post.
There is an Ye Antientest Burial Ground in New London, CT. It's discussed in the links below. Try calling the New London, CT City Hall and get in touch with the department that would oversee the cemeteries. If you have a name and a date of death, they should be able to get you some information. If you can get a map of the cemetery and a grave location, I can get a picture if you need it. It's not too far from my home.

http://newlondongazette.com/histrc.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Antientist_Burial_Ground,_Ne...

I wonder if your mystery Fatt ancestors, ie John born around 1810 and his son Henry born 15 October 1837 in Baden Germany, have anything to do with Thomas William Fatt, baptised at St Andrew Holborn on 13 September 1793.

Thomas William Fatt worked for the Bank of England in 1810, as did his father and his uncle, but by 1817 TWF had 'got into debt and fled to the continent'. He had brothers named John and Henry, and his cousin Ann Fatt married a German in 1820.

All the details of Thomas William Fatt, his family and his forebears, are contained in my book 'Pierssene, a Huguenot Family of London', details of which are on my website www.louisewilson.com.au

Hope this helps.

Louise Wilson

I don't know if there is a connection, but I am researching the family of Epaphroditis Miller born 1801 in Lyme. He was the son of Daniel and Rebecca Miller. Other siblings are Ira, Asahel and Mary known so far.
