Are there any other researchers that have ancestors who worked or lived at the Hospital?

You can find her name in the census for New London County. Otherwise, perhaps a local Norwich or New London County library can help. What was her name and what years was she there?

Perhaps her records are still at the hospital - I saw pictures posted on a web site and there were file cabinets still filled with patient files. Good luck

Hi,

You wouldn't believe the stuff that's still in the buildings at the old state hospital! Yes, there are filing cabinets stuffed with patient records hanging around in those buildings. I have taken photographs of them and many other items inside the buildings there.

I would suggest you get in touch with the Connecticut Mental Health and Addiction Services at 860-418-7000. They may be able to help point you in the right direction toward getting the records you're seeking.

How do you get in to take photos? I am very interested in old insane asylums and would love to get in to take a few pictures.

Hi,

Norwich State Hospital for the Insane opened in October of 1904. It was later used for purposes other than to care for those were mentally ill.

It's not legal to go *inside* the buildings. There are signs everywhere that state 'no trespassing'. The guards won't hassel you if you're just snapping shots of the outside. You could try to get permission from someone....I've tried many times but can't seem to get in touch w/ anyone who could give such permission. So, I just sneak inside when no one's looking. Not legal, that's true. But I wouldn't trade the shots I've gotten for anything...not even threat of fine or jail time. As far as I'm concerned, the place is completely enthralling.

Hi --

Did you have any luck finding out how to obtain information on former patients at Norwich State Hospital? I am interested in finding out about one of my wife's relatives who was also a patient there. Thank you.

The patients' names are listed in the censuses. What's the name and possible dates that your person was in the hospital?
