John Doughty lived an interesting life. He was born in the village of Leadenham in Lincolnshire, England in 1853. He married Amy Perkins in 1875. He had a successful career as a head gardener at an estate in Kent, England, entering many prestigious horticultural shows. I have not discovered that John and Amy ever had children.
In 1895, John emigrated to the USA and Amy followed the following year. He appears to have worked briefly in Pennsylvania as a head gardener before moving to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1897, where again he worked as a head gardener.
In around 1900, he seems to have set himself up with his own Florist's business in Kimberley Avenue, New Haven, Ct. He acquired US nationality in 1900. For the next 5 years John is well-represented in horticultural journals and the local press.
In 1906, however, John appears to disappear. His wife is granted a divorce in 1908 and remarries a William Sanderson. Amy dies in West Haven, Ct, in 1936. I can find no obvious death certificate for John Doughty in the USA or UK. His business in New Haven is taken over by the former manager in 1913.
I have much more detail about John prior to 1905 but what I really want to know is what happened to him AFTER 1906. Was the divorce a great scandal that forced him out of the state? Was there trouble with his floristry business? Did he die in the US, if so where? Where might he be buried?
If anyone can shed any light on this mystery, I would be very grateful if you could get in touch.
