Shared your questions with some friends & they reminded me that some Irish names have some quirks. In tracing their Irish roots they found that Hackett is the "newer" version of Guckian (goo-key or goo-keen). Looked on www.libraryireland.com/AnglicisedSurnames but couldn't locate a reference to Coughlan but did find Bowen-Bohan.

One other thing just crossed my mind. Coughlan - Cough - Coughie or Coughey. How often have you hear someone referred to by just their surname (think about Downton Abbey's servants). When writing out Coughlan you can see where someone might shorten the name to Cough & then adding "ie" or "ey" to the name as a bit of whimsy. Coffee! Nicknames can stick for life.

Coffee to Coughan? Could the person have spoken with a brogue & been misunderstood? Was Coffee a woman? I ask because a mistake on a woman's record in the pre-right to vote days could be taken lightly by authorities. Once she married it was her husband's name that needed to be correct. Yes, some modern birth records would ask for mother's maiden name - midwives & doctors could pass on incorrect info. Correcting the record would have involved getting all the parties & witnesses to town hall & someone would say why all the fuss!

If the woman had not been born in USA & the govt wanted proof of birth & lineage then a baptismal certificate might be the first & only document with her name on it prior to her marriage in the 18th, 19th & early 20th centuries.
Does anyone know why a surname would be different on a baptism record? My ancestor was surnamed Coffee on most documents I have found, but on baptism records provided to the US Navy Pension office, the last name was listed as Coughlan

Any suggestions/help is appreciated

Most of the Parmelee families in CT & elswhere originated in New Haven & Guilford. "Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, Vol. II " page 943, shows many of the families and tells where they lived or moved to. I didnt see an Amos abt 1805, but the genealogies dont list all the children born after the families moved. You may be able to trace the ones that lived in NY about that time period.
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=48019&a...

Thanks agian for the information, but nothing Nancy posted refers to my gggrandfather Amos. I know Jane and Zella have death certificates stating their father was born in CT, but this is not correct and the census documents verify that he was born in NY, as was Suzanna. It seems that over time people are not clear where their ancestors were born and I suspect that this is the case with his two daughters. It's a shame there are not more male descendents, but only Horace survived to reproduce and there are no other family members to verify antecedents.
But again, thanks for the help. If you can locate where Amos and Suzanna were married that would be a great help. Regards, Roberta

Hi there,
I just wanted to point out a comment you made regarding Josiah Warmsley. You mentioned the statement below:

Also, "Josiah Warmsley brought his family to Middletown in 1790 and his descendants are still here. They were directly descended from Venture Smith, an African slave who bought his freedom in the mid-1700s and wrote an autobiography of his life's journey."

Josiah, supposedly from African/Native American heritage, was born around 1786, so he was only about 4 years old in 1790 and the names of his parents have not been discovered as of yet; I doubt he brought his family to Middletown.
The Warmsley and the Smith families met in Connecticut where they began to marry; supposedly the first marriage was in 1842 - still checking on that one.
Thanks for your input. Happy Hunting to you.

See prior posts from 2002 about Josiah Warmsley.
The Warmsley in the Alabama calvary was James Warmsley. Josiah Warmsley was born in Rhode Island about 1786, married Nancy Hazzard in 1863 and died in Middletown, CT in 1871. He was black and I doubt any northern blacks fought on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Also, "Josiah Warmsley brought his family to Middletown in 1790 and his descendants are still here. They were directly descended from Venture Smith, an African slave who bought his freedom in the mid-1700s and wrote an autobiography of his life's journey."

Also,
Re: Swans from Stonington, Ct and Otsego Co.,NY
cmah2 (View posts) Posted:	15 Feb 2007 5:55PM GMT
Classification: Query
Hi Carla,

Thanks for letting me know about this Saturday.
Thank you very much. I think I will pursue the marriage and death record from the town hall. And yes, sadly my gg grandmother Ellen was living at the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middlesex county in the year 1900. It is a very sad story as I think she may have been in this hospital for over 30 years. I got the hospital to send me her records from 1873. That is amazing on so many levels. It claims she suffered from melancholy from having too many kids (12 that I have found). I know that would make me want to be hospitalized too.

You likely already have this info but I did find John & Ellen O'Connor/O'Conner/O'Connar/Connors family in the 1860/1870/1880 census in Seymour CT as well as widow Annie and children in the 1910 census. Son John appears in the 1860 census as age 2 and in the 1870 census as age 11. He is gone from the family in the 1880 census. Ellen could not read or write and had mental health issues by 1880. Note that both of Annie's daughters were working in the piano factory in 1910. This would indicate the town of Deep River. So if you want to request any vital stats info I would start with the town clerk of Deep River. The name of the town SAYBROOK was changed to DEEP RIVER in 1947. Also if you can find a marriage record for John & Annie it sometimes will list the bride and groom's parents.

I know this John in Saybrook died before 1910 because his wife is a widow in the 1910 census. Also, my John O'Connor's parents were both born in Ireland and I have his baptism record from Derby, Connecticut. He was baptized in June 1858. While this John in Saybrook says he was born in 1857, I am interested in him because it's the same month of June. This is the only John O'Connor that comes close to my relative. One other thing. John's mother Ellen was living in Middlesex County in 1900 and then died in 1916 in Seymour. Her obituary is very detailed and lists all of her daughters, but doesn't list her 2 sons John and David. Meaning they died before she did.

As you likely know from the 1900 census John J. O'Conner b. Jun 1857 in CT was living in Deep River, CT and operated or worked in a pool hall. Both his parents were born in Ireland. He was living with wife Annie, b. Dec 1868 in England who immigrated to the US in 1875 at age 8. They had been married 12 yrs in 1900. They had 3 children: Mary A. 12, Annie A. 11, William B. 8. In 1900 Deep River was a village in the town of Saybrook. The census taker did not list the street name or number of their residence. Shame on him.
The difficulty is finding him in prior census because of the many spellings of the surname. O'CONNER, O'CONNAR, CONNERS, CONNAR, O'CONNOR, etc., etc. If you know of any of his siblings it would this would aid in the search. Also, if the parents you suggest were not both born in Ireland this may rule them out.
How do you know he died between 1900 & 1910 and where is he buried?

I am looking for the death record for John O'Connor who died in Saybrook between 1900 and 1910. His wife was Annie and he was born in Connecticut in 1858. I am trying to confirm he is the son of my GG grandparents John and Ellen O'Connor from Seymour, CT. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Buckley E. Johnson is shown on the census as having a wife
Francis A. Scovill. There are others, but this seems the best fit.

He appears to be buried in the Higganum Cemetery

The Haddam Historical society Haddamhistory.org. Shows that Buckley E. Johnson built the Higganum Feed Store. Which still stands.

Scovill is a well known name in Higganum/Haddam

I am not sure if we have the same William, but my thinking is if you are researching Stow, Stowe, Stowell, Stough, you are going to have similar names and all we need is a missing piece...;) THank you !
