Re: Looking for Herman Schmidt

Herman Schmidt arrived in NY on August 10, 1893 from Germany
He was naturalized in NY on April 24, 1900 and was living a 630 E 139 St. NYC. Birthdate shown as July 4, 1876.
Witness was Charles E Schmidt, 315 E 85th St., NYC
I cannot find him in the 1900 census.
In 1910 he is listed as a Boarder in nNw Britain, CT age - 35 with son Julian, 4. Herman is a baker. He is shown as still being married. Not sure where the wife is -

On July 13, 1910 Herman filled out an application for a passport. It shows he was born July 4, 1886 in Wildbad, Wuerttenberg, Germany. He is 35 yrs. old. He immigrated April 1894 and was naturalized Apr 24, 1900 in NY. he resided in New Britain from 1908 to 1910. His son is listed at Julian b. 2-24-1906 in Middletown. Herman is shown as a baker, blue eyes, blonde hair, 5'6" tall. It doesn't show where he was going but does show he planned on staying there for 6 months.

Herman Godfrey Schmid is shown on the WWI draft registration. The info I found was a little different then what you have listed.
b. July 4, 1876
Naturalized, truck driver
nearest relative is listed as Julian residing in New Britain, CT.

In 1920 Julian, age 13 is shown as a boarder living with Margaret Ellinger at 514 Stanley St. in New Britain.

Cannot find him in the 1920 or 1930 census.
Note - In his WWI record - Herman is living in Hartford, Hartford County and his son, Julian would have been about 12 and was living with someone in New Britain. Hope this helps some.

If you have any questions concerning the above - contact me at mom3477@yahoo.com
Claudine
Thank you. Your information helped confirm what I had on the family although I did not know of the death of Isaac.
If you have any information about Lydia, that would be most helpful.

There might have been some awful plague/sickness in Saybrook as most of the 7 children died within the period Sep to Oct of 1751. I wonder if anyone knows anything of this.

Happy New Year!

In the Vital Records of Saybrook Colony 1636-1860 book, has the following information on the family from Extracts from The Land Records:
4:187 James Bayley was marryed to Lydia Stevens Jany 16th 17737/8.
Their son James was born March ye 7th 1739.
Their son Daniell was born ye 3d day of August 1740.
Their daughter Hannah was born July 27th 1742.
Their son Isaac was born the 19th day of June 1744.
Their daughter Elisabeth was born the 2d day of August 1746.
Their son Nathan Bayley was born October ye 18th 1749.
Their son Daniel Deceased September the 24th 1751.
Their daughter Hannah Deceased September ye 25th 1751.
Their daughter Elisabeth Deceased September ye 28th 1751.
Their son Nathan Deceased September ye 29th 1751.
Their son Isaac Deceased October the 6th 1751.

In the Barbour Collection there was a Lydyah, d. James & Hannah, b. Aug. 15, 1715 in Killingworth. From VR. Vol. 2 page 181. This may be the Lydia who married James Bayley.

I have done quite a bit of research of the Stevens family of Killingworth and I will see if I have any information about Lydia.

Harry Walden, Georgetown, TX

Hello,
I am replying to this in 2009. You and I have common Harris and Johnson relatives. The Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants, address below, has much information about many of your early names. All of it has been thoroughly researched and validated with sources. Your might want to take a look at it as well as join the society.
Sue Welles

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctsmfsd/Index.html

My great grandfather Francis Carl Allen was born around 1905 somewhere in CT, most likely in Hartford. He had two brother named Patrick Allen and Arthur Allen. His parents were Irish immigrants who were killed in a train crash around 1910 when the boys were young. They went to St. John's Orphanage and School for Boys in Deep River, CT. I have written there and no one has been able to provide me with any records. If anyone knows anything on the Allens or St. John's School for Boys, please let me know!

Thanks!!
sarah.king88@yahoo.com

I have recently found an old bible that once belonged to Leet Hurd and his wife, Wealthy Redfield. This is a marvelous find for the Hurd and Redfield family historians as it lists Leet and Wealthy’s family as well as Leet’s parents Caleb and Mary Griswold. This 1809 bible is in poor shape, but the three pages of family information are clear and written in fine penmanship.

As a hobby I attempt to find such old items and connect them with descendants or extended family members. Please contact me at Suemanz.graham@comcast.net if you are interested in this bible.

Regards,

Sue
Lewis Clark was a former resident of Barre, VT. I am not sure if his wife came from Vermont, Connecticut or somewhere else. All I have is her name was Bess (not sure if nickname or not) and that she predeceased her husband when he passed in 1970 in Middletown, Connecticut.

I am seeking an accurate name and estimated DOB for Bess and where she died and is buried. I presume Lewis is in an unmarked grave near his last residence of Middleton, CT.

As late as the 1946 edition of the Barre City directory, he was listed as a resident. By the next edition on this site, which is 1949, I believe, he is gone. Does anyone have any information on a couple named Lewis and Bess Clark prior to 1970? Thanks.

Lewis E Clark
Death Date: 9 Jul 1970
Death Place: Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut
Age: 68 Years
Birth Date: abt 1902
Marital Status: Widowed
Spouse: Bess
State File #: 13789
Residence : Cromwell, Middlesex, Connecticut

Hi, Jim-

Thank you for the email address for the Russell Library. That will be a huge help to me in my family research. The findagrave.com info is actually information which I submitted, and then have been adding to over time. I'm just curious as to other information I could find in his obituary-perhaps names of parents, etc. Thank you so much for your reply-I greatly appreciate it!

Hi Stephie, you should first go to www.findagrave.com and do a query on your great-grandfather. You will find information on both he and his wife. There are also pictures of this grave stone.

Birth: Feb., 1854, England
Death: 1927
Middletown
Middlesex County
Connecticut, USA

Before coming to US, Thomas Tillbrook was one of the Queen's footguards. He was a driver for the Royal Horse Artillery.

Husband of Lucy (Farrow) Tillbrook
Father of Thomas W. Tillbrook
Father of Ralph C.
Would anyone be willing to do a look-up for me for my great-grandfather's obituary, or anything else pertaining to his death/burial? His name was Thomas TILLBROOK and he was married to Emma DILLON nee WALTER. His date of death was 13 December 1927, and he is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery. Any information on him would be greatly appreciated. I live in CT, but I have no way of getting to Middletown to do the research myself. Thank you so much.

Seeking information on Thomas TILLBROOK and his family. He was born in England around 1854. He was married first to Lucy FARROW. Their sons were Thomas W. TILLBROOK, Ralph TILLBROOK, and George TILLBROOK. His second wife was Emma DILLON, nee WALTER. They lived in Middletown, CT and had a daughter, Lillian TILLBROOK in 1920. Thomas Sr. passed away in 1927. I'm looking mostly for information as to what happened to Lucy FARROW-date of death, etc. Also, a date of death for Thomas W. TILLBROOK-all I know is that he passed away sometime after 1930. Any and all information on the TILLBROOK family is appreciated! Thank you!

My grandparents, Harold and Lillian LOGAN were living at 136 William St. in Middletown at the time. Lillian attended the circus with her mother Emma TILLBROOK as well as Sandra, and from what I was told, both women were burned in the fire that killed my aunt. Is there anyone who remembers my family from that time and who could tell me a little about them? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Don't limit your search to Middletown. Although Middletown is in Middlesex County, it is very close to Hartford County. There are not county governments in Connecticut All vital records are kept by the individual towns and cities.

CT is a sma;; state, and all the towns and cities run together. Middletown is approximately 15 miles south of the city of Hartford. It would have been natural for the families to spread into nearby towns in other counties. People frequently lived in one town and worked in another.

When looking at census records, don't limit yourself to Middlesex County. When people entered the country they were asked where the were going. That did not mean that was where they ended up staying as the settled down in this country. My grandmother had a couple brothers who came to Hartford from Sweden because this is where she lived. They then moved on to Montana. Other relatives ended up in the areas, but not necessarily in Hartford.

Marilyn
CT

I am writing to see if you can find some information on my relative, David L Spencer. I have managed to find data showing that he was born in Connecticut in 1807 and died in Durham, Hancock County, Illinois in 1859. He married Cleantha Clarissa Burr in April 1831 in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut. It is my understanding that the following children were born to this couple: Franklin H., Austin W., Stark M., Lyman, Alonzo B and George Albert. We have exhausted all avenues to determine David’s parentage that we can think of and will appreciate any assistance you are able to provide.
I am seeking information on the MARINO and LAROSA families from Melilli, Italy. My great-great grandmother was Giuseppina MARINO and she married Luigi (Louis) LAROSA. They immigrated to the US circa. 1898. I believe other MARINOs and LAROSAs also settled in the Middletown area, but I don't have any concrete proof. Other names in the family: RANDAZZO, MILARDO, possibly MIANO-all settled in the Middletown area.

Thought this was interesting. If anyone has any connections to this church, the land has been sold. Everything in the church is being sold, windows, pews, crosses, chairs. If the items are not taken they will be detroyed along with the church building. That would be a shame. This church served many denominations over the years so if you have any ancestral connection, it may be nice to take a look for a piece of your family's history.
I wish I had ancestors who attended this church.
http://www.wfsb.com/news/19671151/detail.html

That would be great! I would really appreciate it. I just don't know where else to look. I know he was born in Connecticut, and in all honesty it would only make sense that he was born in Middlesex county. I have something at home that says he was born in East Hampton. I'll have to dig it up tonight and post a reply tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help!
Bill

Hello Jane,

Thanks for the link! I didn't find anything in any of the Middlesex county towns. Are the towns in CT good about keeping records? I know here in MA our records from 1850-1910 are amazing.

Bill

Good Morning!

I am trying to dig deeper into my roots and I was wondering if someone could help me with a little bit of research.

My ancestors are from the Middletown/East Hampton/Portland area. While I've been blessed with information from a distant family member and help via RAOGK, I was hoping I could find someone here who lives in East Hampton (or nearby) who could help me out.

The furthers I can go back is my g-g-g-g grandfather Isaac Schofield. Allegedly he was born in 1817 in East Hampton. I would love to be able to verify this. I'm not sure how accurate or available records are for that time period. The only thing I know for certain is that he was born in Middlesex county. It could be between 1810 and 1820. My hope is that I can find out who his parents were and maybe other ancillary information. Through the help of the previously mentioned researchers, Isaac may have been a Jr. so his dad was probably named Isaac.

My second request would be to find a marriage record that may exist in Middlesex county between Isaac Schofield and Susan Lyons. Their first son was born in 1846, which would mean that they were in their late 20's when they wed.

One thing I should point out is that the last name Schofield has been recorded many different ways: Schofield, Scofield, Schofell, Scovill, and Scoville. I don't believe there are any other variations.

Anywho, if someone out there is able to take this on let me know. I can provide much more information. I don't have everything in front of me right now but I have documentation that might be of assistance.

Thank you all kindly :) :)

Bill
