I also am curious and from what I have seen it was proposed that three Ray brothers came together from "Narragansett Country" and were possible Portugese decent! Rays are semi-prolific in southern New England. There is one tantalizing possibility in that a James Ray is on a Tax list of names from Rochester in Sept.6 1687 which was the combined North and South Kingston R.I. The list was of Gov. Andros, transcribed in Genealogies of R.I. Families Vol.II N-W put out buy the New England His gen. I can't offer anymore than this.
