The first couple are too young to have had a child in 1872. As for the second couple, I will keep them in mind but they don't really fit the picture. Pennsylvania is not in the cards. but thank you for looking and for sending these. It is much appreciated.
Peggy

I have looked for the deaths of both of them, for years. Alice was remarried to John T. Kelly in 1872. Alice and Kelly were divorced in 1883, and Alice disappeared. The last time I found her was the 1880 census with Kelly. Then the messy divorce in the 1883 New York Times. Rumour has it that Hotchkiss died in 1878 (according to NY times) but I didn't find it.
Peggy

Alice Davis had a daughter Armiah Alice Hotchkiss in Canada on May 22, 1872. When the daughter was baptised, the father's name was given as JOhn W. Hotchkiss of Brooklyn. On a later census, the daughter said her father was born Connecticut. Looking for the marriage of John W. Hotchkiss and Alice Davis abt 1870-1872. Thanks for any help. I have been looking for years.

Re: Stephen Collins/Dolly Olmstead

I am a descendant of Stephen (b1754, d 1841) and Dolly (Olmstead/Olmsted (b1763, d1844 (not 1884) Collins. Stephen was the son of Amos (b. abt 1717, d1778) and Prudence (Noble) Collins (b1721 d1804). Amos was NOT the son of Nathan. He was the son of Daniel (b1678, d1745) and Ruth (Wilkinson b1681, d1747) Collins , of Milford, CT. Daniel was the son of Daniel (b. abt 1648, d1690) and Sarah (Tibbals, b. 1654, d 1743) Collins. Amos is listed in the cemetery records of Center Cemetery, though I have walked that cemetery several times and have yet to find his grave. Same for his wife, Prudence. There are so many stones there that have been worn smooth over the centuries. Stephen and Dolly did in fact leave CT, for N.Y. sometime after their marriage in 1781, settling in Norwich, Chenango Co. I have yet to identify the parents of Dolly Olmstead. There is some thought that they were residents of Catskill NY around 1787, though I have not confirmed this. They left NY about 1813, and arrived in Cincinnati, where they stayed about a year. From there, they went to Kentucky, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Stephen died in Jun 1841, Campbell Co, and is buried in Old Burlington Cemeterty, Boone Co. Side note - Stephen was a patriot in the Revolution, serving in the CT Militia. I have his pension records. I have a great deal of information on the Collins line, though I have been unable to confirm ancestors for Daniel Collins (1648). His wife Sarah Tibbals was the son of Thomas Tibbals (b 1615 England), d.1703 MIlford CT). Thomas came to America in 1635 on the ship True Love, and was an early settler of Milford. It is documented that he piloted the first settlers through the wilderness to settle the new colony of Milford. I have much information on my Collins family. I also have a considerable amount of information on the ancestry of Prudence Noble. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help.
Jill Bolton

The father of Charles Edward Vere Kennon was born in England and lived in Rhode Island. He went on a whaling trip to the Kerguelen and Heard Islands, southern Indian Ocean, in 1855, out of New London, CT. The New London County Historical Society has the journal of this voyage.
He married Adelaide Hall in 1858 in a double wedding with my grt grandmother Mary C. Hall Humphrey. They had three sons including the above named one. Adelaide Hall, of Goshen, was the sister of Asaph Hall, astronomer, and daughter of Asaph Hall. I think her mother was Eunice Palmer, if I have the right generation.Charles Henry Kennon died of a fever in the Civil War in 1863 Iin a RI regiment) and Adelaide remarried, a George Lambertson. Asaph Hall, the astronomer, discovered the Moons of Mars at the Naval Observatory, 1876/ Charles Edward Vere Kennon had no children. I believe he was a Dr. His brother Lyman was a General. Another brother lived in Oregon. His daughter Laura Hall Vere Kennon taught English lit at Brooklyn College.Adelaide Hall had a twin sister Adeline.

The newtown church records might just add to the confuzion. There are no births & marriages recorded before 1743. There are some earlier records of the society meetings. First i found of Parmelee name is mentions of Stephen Parmaly & Nathaniel Parmalee about 1734 - 1735, Hiram Parmalee and Rufus Parmelee are appointed to church committies ( names of Nathaniel`s sons listed by Ezra) no indication if they are either young enough to be sons on Nathaniel or old enough to be brothers but were of adult age. Hiram & Rufus names appear many times thru the years into the 1800s, it almost looks like Nathaniel 1694 & Nathaniel 1761 had children with the same names. There is a mention of Hiram Parmelee Jr. & wife Betsey in 1828.
I found only 3 BMD records:
"Jan 7 1760, died, Nathaniel Parmelee, aged abt 70 yrs."
"Nov 15 1770, died, Noah Parmelee, aged abt 70 yrs."
"Eloice Parmele, dau of Nathaniel and Althea Parmele was baptized Oct 7 1801."

This shows Nathaniel 1761 did marry an Althea but still unknown surname.
I found no mention of the name Whitmore/Wetmore or any variation of the name in the church records.

As commonaly found in early CT. records here is a gap in the records between 1776 to 1800, the period of the Rev War when births & marriages were not recorded.

Yeah, confuzion is normal in the early records. i`ll be lookin at the film this afternoon, some of the pages are hard to read but i`ll see what i can find.
The first of the Whitmore family i find is Thomas Whitmore who was in Charleston, Mass 1639, a descendant of his, Joseph Whittemore removed from Charleston to Mansfield, CT. abt 1698. Will need to trace the line of Thomas.

Hi again Larry,
I've just reviewed "Families of Early Guilford, Vol. II, and find that the descent I gave you for Nathaniel (1761) is correct, although Nathaniel (1761), who I believed married Althea Whitmore, has no wife named, and no further information is given about him. However, the Nathaniel (1694) who Ezra Levan Johnson says married Althea Whitmore, also has no wife given and no further information is given about him either. Nathaniel (1694) is the oldest brother of Stephen (1714), who is father of Nathaniel (1761). Ezra seems to have confused the uncle with the man who fathered the children born @ 1800 in Newtown. Which Nathaniel married Althea will have to be determined by other sources.
Isn't this fun? Thanks again,
Kate

Hello Larry,
The dates of birth for the Parmelee children range from Rufus 28 Dec 1792, to Polly Ann 15 May 1807. I have been successful in locating all of them with their wives in mid 1800's census data. Nathaniel and his family first appear in Newtown in 1800, with appropriate tallies.

With due respect for "Newtown's History and Historian, Ezra Levan Johnson",
Nathaniel b. 1694, while I'm sure he was a remarkable man, could hardly have fathered children born 100 years later.

The person from whom I got my information gave me the descent of Olive as Stephen (1669) and Elizabeth Baldwin;
Stephen (1714) and (2)Hannah Touc(s)ey, (1) Elizabeth Sharp d.1754;
Nathaniel (1761) and Althea Whitmore;
Olive (1794); my ggg gm.

He also gave me death dates for Nathaniel (1834) and Althea (1837) with burials in Huntington Cemetery, Newtown.

My questions seem still to be with the mysterious Althea Whitmore.
I continue to wonder if Althea (1761) as I have been given, is related in some way to James Whitmore, also in 1800 Newtown census. Althea is not a common name, and another Althea Whitmore, (m. Rev. Joseph Lamson) was daughter of Rev. James, and sister of James and Timothy, both staunch Loyalists who migrated to Canada following the Revolution. The name Althea is carried on in that family. James, the Loyalist, had a son James who would be the correct age for the one found in the 1800 Newtown census. While information on other children of Loyalist James is available, I've been able to find little on this son James, and nothing that confirms that he went to Canada with the others in 1783. Thanks very much for your reply. I am grateful for your help and appreciate your checking church records.
Kate

Hi Kate, your info on Nathaniel appears to be incorrect. The Nathaniel Parmelee that married Althea Whitmore in Newtown, Fairfield, CT. was born 2 May 1694 In Guilford, New Haven, CT., son of Stephen Parmelee & Elizibeth Baldwin.
See Parmelee Family in Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut, Vol. II
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=48019&a...=

Attached is page from the book " Newtown's history and historian, Ezra Levan Johnson"
you read it online or download from:
http://archive.org/details/newtownshistoryh00johns

I will look at FHL film of Newtown church records tomorow, will let you know if i find anything on Whitmore.
Larry

Althea married Nathaniel Parmelee, likely bet. 1782 and 1790, probably in or near Newtown, Ct. Both were b. in 1761. They are found in the 1800 census in Newtown. Seven children are known, all of whom raised families in Newtown area. Nathaniel was the son of Stephen and Hannah Tousey Parmelee, but Nathaniel was only 8 when his father died, and I find no Parmelee or with alternate spelling in 1790 in Newtown. There is a James Wetmore in 1790 in Newtown, and a James Whitmore in 1800 in Newtown. This James Whitmore, wife and children seem to be near in ages to the Nathaniel Parmelee family. Perhaps this James is a brother to Althea.

Any information with regards to this family greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Kate

According to the book referenced below, Eunice (Hickok) Drakely must have died after 1735 because there were also the daughters Comfort and Eunice born to them in 1737 and 1739 respectively (See the attached composite of pages 35 & 36). It's possible but, unless it was also a second wife's name, would a second wife have named one of her daughters after his first wife?

From:
The Hickok genealogy : descendants of William Hickoks of Farmington, Connecticut : with ancestry of Charles Nelson Hickok
Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Pub. (Samuel and Beterus Drakeley)
Thomas Drakeley (Eunice's spouse) was born Woodbury, Conn. 2/29/1701 and died same place 1789.
I figure either Eunice's death date is in error, or Thomas had a second wife.
Mary Bateman or Backman born abt 1751 married in Litchfield Jan 1780 to David Smith

I'm trying to sort out my great great great grandmother, Mary wife of David Smith. According to some unreferenced sources, her name was Mary Tryon, but the marriage date and place (Litchfield, Connecticut) gives David's wife's name as Mary Bateman (or possibly Backman). There is a greater likelihood that her name was not Tryon, as she had a daughter-in-law called Mary Tryon, and perhaps there has been confusion between the two Marys. The Barbour collection of Connecticut records gives her name as Mary Bateman, but notes that another source gives it as Backman. My searches for Batemans in Connecticut has yielded nothing useful. Can anyone shed some light on a Mary Bateman born about 1751, possibly also in Litchfield, Connecticut, married in 1780?

John, Ezra, & Michael Thornton of Salisbury, Revolutionary War

Brothers John(b1757), Ezra(b1759), and Michael(b1763) Thornton of Salisbury, CT, enlisted in the Continental Army at nearby Sheffield, MA - John and Ezra in June, 1780 for a 6 month term, and Michael in June, 1781 for 3 years. Their father, Ezra Thornton(b1724)may have died in 1780 in Salisbury, prompting the older boys to enlist for the bounty to support their mother and sisters. I have not been able to find any record of the death of their father, Ezra Thornton born in 1724, nor of his wife, Ruth(b1728). They are my 5th great grandparents, and Ezra(b1759) is my 4th GGF. I have found all the information available in the Barbour Collection, and I would be grateful for any other information on this family anyone has run across. I would also like a referral to anyone who performs for-fee look-ups in Salisbury and/or Sheffield.
Regards, Terry Thornton

That is great--thank you so much!! I have been looking everywhere for anything that could confirm that. It would have been highly unlikely for there to have been more than one Martin Konopaske in Terryville I guess!

Thank you are lot.

Did I got it right, my great grand aunt Edna didn't have any children? Overall, obituaries give a lot of information.

William Gagner could have be born between 1940 and 1950. I can recall my mother telling me about a distant relative from USA taking part in Vietnam War. Well, these are family stories with or without basis in reality. Anyway, someone called Doris has sent a letter to Finland to my great aunt.

Eva Rasanen Nelson had a sister, Maria Rasanen (born 1886). I am a little surprised that her name wasn't mentioned in the obituary. Potentially, Maria (or Mary) moved from New York to somewhere else than Connecticut. Still don't know the name of her spouse.

Seemingly, Nelson Family has managed well.

Searching for information about descendants of Esther (born about 1918) and Edna M. Nelson (born about 1920).

According to 1930 cencus the Nelson family was living in Litchfield on 75? North Main Street (in an own house). According to 1940 cencus Esther had already moved away. Maybe got married before 1940? Esther has been married to Paul J. Gagner. Did they have children? She stayed in Connecticut (Winchester, Torrington?).

Is/was Edna married? Did she stay in Connecticut? Does/did she have any children?

Father is William Nelson (born about 1887 in Hameenkyro, Finland) and mother Eva Nelson (maiden name Rasanen, born 15 Dec 1890 Kaavi, Finland). Eva is my great grand aunt who emigrated to USA with her sister Maria 1912.
