At the time I understand there was a dispute between Litchfield county and Pike County, PA culminating in the Pennamite War. Ambrose married Susan Cox, Ambrose had at least two sons David Foster, and Jesse. He may have also had other childern John, Earl, Jane, Althea, and Elmira. He may have been married to a Huldah? Some believe Huldah was his first wife and Susan his second. All unconfirmed. Please help me make the link with Ambrose to Litchfield. Thanks, Mike Marsh

Leaming Hawkins BRADLEY, b. 1808, Litchfield, CT

I am looking for names of the wife and children of Leaming Hawkins BRADLEY who was born on 10 Oct 1808 in Litchfield, Connecticut. He is in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Records, with his parents shown as Horace and Hannah Bradley. Horace Bradley married Hannah Hawkins on 7 Feb 1808 in Litchfield. Horace was born June 8, 1788, son of Aaron and Lorrin Abernethy Bradley, who had married July 8, 1787, according to Barbour records.

Barbour does not show a marriage for Leaming Hawkins Bradley. However, in the 1840 Census for Washington, Litchfield, Connecticut, Leaming H. Bradley is recorded with a household including 2 males under 5, 1 male 15 and under 20, 1 male 30 and under 40 [himself], 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20 and under 30 [likely his wife]. He does not appear in census records after 1840. I would also appreciate information on when he died and where he is buried. Thank you.
Daniel Wheeler parents were Edward Wheeler and Thankful Crippen of Canaan, Columbia County, NY.

I am trying to locate the parents of Amanda Pease and her birth town.
John Ferguson, New Milford, CT, 1800-1811

Can anyone tell me more about John Ferguson, who became the guardian for my great-great-great grandfather, Henry Sillivan/Sullivan, in 1811 in New Milford, CT? I cannot find any records for John after 1811, but here is what I have found up until that time, all of it occurring in New Milford:
John married Polly Fuller on January 5, 1806. John and Ezra Lacey bought a house in New Milford on December 1, 1806, then sold it six months later. John and Polly had a son, William Henry Ferguson, on February 5, 1807. The 1810 US Census shows John with 2 males and 2 females in the household, still in New Milford. Samuel Orcutt’s The History of New Milford and Bridgewater, Connecticut claims that they lived in what is now the town of Bridgewater (part of New Milford before 1856.)

Since my ancestor was 14 at the time of the guardianship, he could have become John’s apprentice. What was John’s occupation?

Thank you for any clues.
Sharon
Nathaniel was the son of Philander and Laura Thompson DWY. Philander died ca 1833, probably in Kent. I am also looking for any information on Philander's death, as I have not been able to locate a vital record or cemetery information on him. I have also been unable to locate a will. Were there obituaries in Kent newspapers as early as 1833?
Does anyone know if St. Andrew's Church (or the M.E. Church in Kent at the time ca 1827/1830) kept baptismal records? If so, where might I obtain them?
Nathaniel's sister Hannah is my ancestor.

Lineus Richmond was born about 4 October 1801 in Litchfield Co., CT. I think he is the youngest son of Edmund Richmond and Huldah Frisbie. Joshua Bailey Richmond's book says that Lineus is the son of the Edmund but I have not been able to prove it. All of Edmund's children had their birth's registered in CT, except Lineus.
Does anyone have any information to prove or disprove Lineus' parents? If Edmund and Huldah are his parents why wasn’t his birth recorded like his brothers?
Thank you.
Irene
Rachel Wheeler, Rachel Eaton, Rachel Paulk, born 1705, Concord, Middlesex County, MA

Rachel Paulk was my 6th great grandmother. Rachel Paulk was born on 06 Dec 1705 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Her parents were Samuel Paulk and Sarah Brabrook. Rachel Paulk married 1st William Eaton in 1726, Tolland, Tolland County, CT. William Eaton was born July 1700, Windsor, Hartford County, CT and died 1737, Tolland, Tolland County, CT. Widow Rachel Eaton married 2nd Nathan Wheeler on 23 Apr 1741, Tolland, Tolland County, CT. Nathan Wheeler died 17 Jan 1766, Amenia, Dutchess County, NY.

My question is Rachel’s death date. I can not locate a reliable death date for her in Connecticut or Dutchess County, NY. There does not seem to be a grave site for her in the “Burying Ground at Coleman's Station”, North East, Dutchess County, NY where her husband Nathan was buried at his death in 1766. I would appreciate any help or clues that you may have. Best regards, Richard Wheeler
Am looking for the location & date of death of Alban Guild Ferriss. He was b. in Milton, CT 8-13-1832, the son of Ezra & Sophronia Guild Ferriss. According to Orcutt's History of New Milford, his father was a clothier there for some time. A headstone for him and his wife Sarah L. Sherman is found in Center Cemetery, New Milford, CT. His brother's Hilliard & Jay died in the Civil War. However, Alban is not on the war list in Orcutt's Book. Any help is apprecitated. Jan Lyon

Jacob Smith & Mary Lewis dau. of Gershom and Mary (Maltby) Lewis

Hello everyone,

Does anyone researching the Smith, Lewis, or Maltby surnames happen to know where I can find a primary source showing that the Mary (Lewis) Smith (1742-1823) who married Jacob Smith (1738-1807) is indeed the daughter of Gershom Lewis and Mary (Maltby) Lewis?

Mary (Lewis) Smith was born in Guilford, but married and lived in Litchfield. She and husband Jacob Smith were laid to rest at Northfield Cemetery, Litchfield, CT.

The Barbour Collection of CT vital records does not give the names of Mary Lewis's parents in the citation for her 1763 marriage to Jacob Smith. So far, I've only found a secondary source that claims she was the daughter of Gershom and Mary (Maltby) Lewis: this is on page 44 of the book "Smith with Collateral Lines: Chipman, Divine, Huckins, Jones, Lewis (Barnstable branch), and Mayflower Connection," by Harriet Southworth (Lewis) Barnes. (published in Philadelphia, 1910)

Any suggestions to help prove that Mary (Lewis) Smith is the daughter of Gershom and Mary (Maltby) Lewis will be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

Mike

Polly Davis, Polly Terrill, Gerardus Ferriss

Who are Polly Davis’ parents?

Polly Davis (b. 30 Jul 1784, d. 28 Dec 1858) married Gerardus Ferriss (b. 17 Mar 1779, d. 29 Jul 1867) in January 1804. (from Orcutt’s History of New Milford)

Traditional and obvious sources (probate, land records, published genealogies etc.) have not provided the answer.

The “naming convention” approach has produced a possible clue.

Gerardus Ferriss and Polly Davis had 7 children: Charles, Caroline, Charlania, George, Paulina, Albert, and Charlotte.

The two names Paulina and Charlan(i)a are fairly rare.

In the Church records for the Washington Church at New Preston, Jared Terrill baptized several children including two girls named Paulina (b. 20 Jan 1800) and Charlana (b. 18 May 1797).

Also, there is a Polly Terrill who was born 4 Aug 1784, only five days from when Polly (Davis) Ferriss was born.

Polly Terrill had a brother Curtis(s) Terrill who had real estate transaction(s) with a Stephen Davis “of New Fairfield.”

Could the “Polly Davis” who married Gerardus Ferriss been Polly Terrill Davis, perhaps a widow, albeit a very young widow?

Any information is greatly appreciated.
The family eventually went to New Jersey after James fought in the Civil War in the Second Connecticut Infantry.

I'm new to CT research. What kind of records are available for the time of Thomas' birth, 1861? I believe the family was Catholic.

Thanks.
Jo
Received information that my ancestor Sarah ( ? ), wife of Jonathan ALLEN of New Marlborough, Berkshire County, Mass. may be the sister of one Reverend Isaac LAWRENCE, who founded the First Church of Christ in Canaan, Litchfield County, CT in 1769; that said Sarah ( LAWRENCE ) ALLEN joined her brother Isaac LAWRENCE's church in 1771, and that she had her six children baptized by her brother there in 1772. Jonathan ALLEN died in New Marlborough January 1779 and Sarah eventually joined the family trek to Braceville, Trumbull County, Ohio in May of 1810. I would like to confirm that my Sarah was actually Sarah LAWRENCE, brother of Isaac.

Litchfield County was a common area for many Native families. My 3rd ggrandmother was Lucina Jackson, a basketmaker. My ggrandmother who lived with her sold many of them in the farmington/bloomfield ct area. Lucinas birthplace is listed as Alsterlitz, NY and Canaan, NY different places on different childrens birth certificates. Her father James Jacksons birthplace is listed as Sharon but I don't know if that means Sharon Ct. or Sharon NY. Her mother was Morina Lawrence birthplace unknown. Lucina and her brother Ezra Jackson are buried in Farmington cemetary. My research is on the Jacksons and Grants in Litchfield, Ct. Any one with any information with these names in Litchfield area please contact me, my email is NievesSky@aol.com

Trying to track Cornelius O'Brien and have encountered a dead-end so hoping that tracking his wife Mary Halloran O'Brien will lead me to more info on Cornelius, specifically his parents and date of emmigration. I have a marriage date for Cornelius and Mary of 21 July 1872 in Winstead. Local parish church search proved unfruitful - now where do I look for marriage record? I know that Mary is buried in Wintead in the Halloran plot with her parents - but no Cornelius. In 1880 they were living in Chatham (East Hampton) in 1880 (census) Suggestions?

Does anyone have information on a Lorenzo Warner or his family, in particular Esther Warner, who show up on the 1860 US Federal Census in New Milford, Litchfield:-

Lorenzo Warner born about 1825
Mary Warner born about 1831
Esther Warner born about 1853
William 1854
Charles 1857
Edward 1858

The New Milford, Litchfield 1880 census also shows:
Lorenzo D aged 54 yrs
Mary C aged 48 yrs
Edward J aged 21 yrs
Carrie A aged 18 yrs
Jennie E aged 14 yrs
Grace M aged 12 yrs

I am trying to trace the family of my g grandmother, Esther Warner, born about 1853/1855. She married William Edley in Rochester, Monroe County 15 Sept 1873, having first met him in the Niagara area. William and Esther moved to England very soon afterwards.

I have only found a couple of Esther Warners born around 1853/1855 and Lorenzo's Esther is one of them.

Would love to hear from anyone who has any information.

Patricia Sandford

Taylor - Woodbury area

I am looking for more information on the following Taylor family. All I have is listed on this page of my site:
http://www.barbaraeyre.com/eyre-genealogy/chart-taylor-willi...

I am particularly interested in the parents, Lewis and Harriet.

As you can see from my notes section on the page, I have the 1860-1880 census from Litchfield County > Woodbury.

The 1880 census, Harriet is living with children Martha, Ida, and Lewis Jr. I am to assume that Lewis H. died by then. Any way to find his obituary, death certificate, burial location, etc? The same goes for Harriet, because she is not showing on the 1900 NY census, so I can possibly assume she died in Woodbury, CT, so am looking for her information. I have no clue what her maiden name is.

According to Ancestry.com, Lewis is showing up on a 1850 Woodbury census, but since I'm not a paid subscriber here, I have no way to view the census. Is he also listed in previous census?

If anyone can help with William's parents with pre-1860 census, death certs, obits, burial info, and anything else, I would deeply appreciate it. So far, these are my only long-term American relatives. My great-grandparents are from Ireland and England and most off-shoots are also from there.

Thanks in advance,
Barbara Eyre
eyregen@barbaraeyre.com

Looking for ancestry on William H. Lord, son of William Lord. WH was born about 1847 in Connecticut, though I don't know where. If I have the right one, he was living with his father William & family in Litchfield in 1850. He left Connecticut in the late 1860s and followed the Santa Fe Trail out to Kansas, where he settled. He can be found in Osage County in 1870, and in Dodge City in 1910. We found his picture in a book of Dodge City history, pictured with other survivors of the Santa Fe Trail at the time a marker was placed on it in Kansas in 1926. My father believes he looks like his father and so we are off on the trail to find out if and how we're related. Anyone with any information, please contact me at lord@prtel.com. Thank you.

I picked up a Ledger from 1851 at a recent auction in Hyde Park and would like to pass it on to the correct historical group. I belive that it is a factory store's ledger from the Litchfield area. Perhaps a steel factory?
- It states no town / factory / locale.. etc.
- All male names
- "Oil for Furnace"
- Credits and debits for meals, bulk grocery's, cash, cord's of wood
- Oysters... bushels of Oysters for the men... Which would require ice... which would require a pond nearby?
- BS Shop entries (Black Smith Shop?)
- Someone used the pages to begin a scrap book of newspaper stories, recipes etc. from a (Hartford?) paper.
- Surnames on a search engine appear to have a common Litchfield / Kent theme (example Orange Wedge was a Litchfield family name)

Would love to trace this down to a specific mill / factory. Thanks.

Here is one week's worth of names.
Renselaer Tuttle - son of Bostwick

I am posting in the rootsweb message board in hopes to find out a bit more about this ancestor of my wife. I have quiet a lot about him in Ohio and Wisconsin, but his early history is still not really clear to me.

He was born in 1786 in Litchfield County to Bostwick Tuttle who married a JUDD (first name either Susanne or Luanne).

Renselaer married Clarisa Crozier and he died in July 1880 in Clark County, Wisconsin. Can share more about his descendants and such.

Any sources for his birth or his parents would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rod
