Since the 1900 Census shows William and Elizabeth's first child was born in N.Y, I checked the N.Y. Italian Gen site, and was able to find their Nov. 20, 1884 marriage in Manhattan, N.Y.::

http://www.italiangen.org/NYCmarriageresults.asp?kind=exact&...

There is information on the site which tells you how to send for a copy of the record.

I am looking for marriage information on William H.W. Burn and Elizabeth Schilling circa 1884-85 in Hartford, CT, possibly in the Bristol area. Elizabeth lived in Manhattan at the time of the 1880 Census. William is said to be born in NYC. William was born about 1856/57, and Elizabeth was born in Quebec about 1864-67. Both their families family moved to Bristol, but I am uncertain if they were married there.

I believe, from what I have in a history of the Carani family, that we are all descended from Count (first name undocumented) Carani. He was a pirate off Sicily before uniting most of Sicily. Dates currently unknown, pre-unification. His descendants divided up. Some went to Romania and started the town of Carani. Others stayed in Sicily while still others moved to the U.S. and Brazil. From all of the documentation I have (passports, wedding bulletins, photographs, letters, government records), we are a single family, however spread out.

MACKEYs buried at Zion Hill Cemetery - records available?

Does anyone know where I can find information about individuals buried at Zion Hill Cemetery? I am having a difficult time reaching someone at the Hartford Department of Public Works, which maintains this city-owned cemetery.

Specifically, I am looking for:
Lizzie MACKEY, died Sept. 24, 1928, bur. @ Zion Hill
Reuben MACKEY, died after the 1920 census was enumerated on Jan. 20, but before his wife Lizzie died in 1928.

I am trying to find out when Reuben died so that I can order a copy of his death certificate from the City. I'd also like to know where in the cemetery they are buried (assuming both of them were buried there).

Thanks,
Brian

Can anyone tell me if they know if there were any train wrecks in Hartford around 1900? My great great grandparents (their last name was Allen) were killed in a train wreck around 1900. They left behind 3 sons, Patrick, Frank and Arthur who ended up in the St. John's school for boys in Deep River. I can't find any records on the boys and was wondering if perhaps any Allens were mentioned in any articles or records about a train wreck. The Allens were from Ireland and the parents' names might be Anthony or Vincent and Louise.

On the marriage certificate he lists his town as: Ballyleidy. Later he would have several sons, one of whom he named Robert.

Maybe, Robert and Henry Hanvey were brothers and James Hanvey and Robert Hanvey were brothers.

Remember, I also have a Robert as the father to Robert, born 1820 in Down.

This is what I have for Robert Hanvey: 1811 Born to John Hanvey, County Down, 1820 born to Robert, County Down, 1814 Robert born to James, Down, 1816 born to Connor in Down. For Denis or Dennis, I have a marriage in 1872 in Antrim, father listed as Francis. I have Dennis as the FATHER of the following with the year of birth preceeding the information: 1857 Elizabeth (Down), 1862 Patrick ( Down), 1872 James (Down) , 1875 Joseph (Down). 1860 Henry (Down). 1877 Anne (Down). I have more on Dennis but they go into 1900's and I don't think you want that. The entry of Robert born to James Hanvey in 1814 is interesting to me because my great great grandfather was Henry Hanvey born to James in Down about 1822. If Robert and Henry are brothers, then we are related although I think all the Hanvey's are related. I notice that Denis as the father has a son named Henry born in 1860 in Down. Additionally, Henry Hanvey named one of his children Robert and he was born in 1856 in Down. The Irish were great at naming their children after their own family members so it could be a link. Search Ancestry Ireland - I get lots of good info from them. If I find anything else on other sites, I will advise you. Happy hunting - I've been at it 7 years and am just touching the surface.

Helen Hanvey Farina
El Paso Texas

James was born free--his father was born a slave as were his maternal grandparents. His mother, Lydia Brayton Willard, born in Smithfield, RI had the money in this family. She purchased the Willard homestead in Uxbridge, MA with her own money and in her own name only granting her husband, Cato Willard, James' father, the "priviledge to enter" the premises and reserving all rights for her children. It is quite an unusual (perhaps unique) property title for a black woman in 1813.

The cemetery association could find no Abbee plot in the Enfield cemetery.

Charlotte:

It gets curiouser...James is not in the Enfield death records! I could hypothesise that he died in NYC where he was reportedly injured and was brought to Enfield for burial as the published grave tanscription suggests. Yet, that monument is not now known by the Cemetery Association. Do you have any ideas?

Charlotte:

I'm still trying to pinpoint James. I've had two lengthy conversations with a gentleman from the Cemetery Association and they don't have a location for that James illard stone. On his recommendation, I've sent a query to the Town Claek asking her to check the death record to see if there's any notation about the burial site.

I'll let you know what I learn.

Mike

Forgot to tell you - Isaac was a comb maker. Looks like Ruth was born 1773, Elizabeth b. 1776, Elijah b. 1777 and not sure when Clifford was born. Propbably more children between Elijah and Marshall who you say was born in 1789. The other children may have died early or just before the 1850 pension application as Marshall was noted since he had died in 1838.
Elizabeth was in CT on 1850 - Ruth was in McDonough, NY and Elijah was in New York, NY also listed as a comb maker.

Thank you so very much.

In the 1900 Census for Buffalo, NY, Marshall's wife Cleore Elizabeth CHAPMAN TRYON and three children were still living. She stated she had given birth to seven children. I have found five now. There was an Isaac C. TRYON, in business with Marshall in 1854 Buffalo, NY and while that was the name of his father, it also may have been a son I have yet to find.

It's too bad the obituaries of the time were not more specific. I have found the obituary for Marshall, Jr., and his only known daughter but not that of his wife and the two sons still living with her at the time of the census.

Marshall, Jr., is believed to have had twin sisters Cleore and Ruth that I have yet to find so I am hopeful.

I am also seeking information on the location of the burial of his father, Marshall Hayden TRYON, Sr., and his mother Ann Elizabeth HAWKS TRYON. I am interested in locating family information on the HAWKS and CHAPMAN lines, as well as being curious if HAYDEN is also a family surname.

I have been looking for this family for over 21 yrs and this year has been one where I am finally making contact with people who have information.

Thanks again.

William's father is Thomas Hickocks of B. Feb 19 1572 and died May 1 1611 (married to Elizabeth Sturley). Thomas' father was Edward 1543-1600. All are of Stratford-on-Avon. There were many Thomas Hickocks in the town, so the Hickok Geneology erroneously follows the wrong on.

I only found one mention of Lewis Hickocks (he rented space from W.

I am looking for information on William (Harry) and Catherine (Kitty) Metcalfe or could be spelt Metcalf. Their children are Catherine, William, Robert, Howard and June. In the 1920 and 1930 USA census this family were living in New Britain, Hartford Connecticut. I have only been able to find this family on census' as it seems like it is not easy to search records for Connecticut. I do have copies of a couple of letters that Kitty wrote to my other cousins that lived in Maryland. The latest letter was written in 1944 and the family were living Winthrop St New Britain Connecticut. From what I can work out William is my Grandfather's cousin. From the 1930 census I know he came to the USA from Yorkshire England when he was 1, I found William on the 1910 census as a step son and I am pretty sure his parents are John and Clara Metcalfe. Clara's married name in the 1910 census is Middleton. William had a sister named Violet and a half brother named Alfred. Any help I can get would be grateful.
According to the 1840 Amherst, Erie Co., N.Y. Census, Marshall H. Troion is age 20-30, with a female of the same age, There is a male child under the age of 5 (assume Clarence).

1850 Buffalo, N.Y. Census::

Marshall H. Tryon, age 37
Ceo E. Tryon, age 34
Francis J. Tryon, age 28
Eliza P. Tryon, age 29
Julia H. Tryon, age 24
Also listed are the 5 following children
Clarence L. Tryon, age 12
Marshall G. Tryon, age 10
George W. Tryon, age 7
Eugene M. Tryon, age 4
Sarah Louisa, age 1

These 5 children along with Charles H., who appears in the 1860 Census age 7, would give you the names of 6 children. The 7th probably died in childhood?

I did a bit of poking on the internet, and I believe Francis is Marshall's brother and Julia is his wife. Eliza could be their sister.

Ancestry has Civil War records and Pensions on their site. There's a Marshall and a Eugene listed, and you can send for their papers thru The National Archives in Wash., D.C.

hmmmm, the monument I guess, MUST be in the Enfield cememtery as the book that lists this monument is taken out of the Enfield records. Perhaps you are not finding a death record of James because he is not actually buried here, did not die here, which would also make sense if the cemetery association does not have record of his burial. Perhaps this monument is erected on a burial site of R. M. Abbe, as a courtesy of the family. Do you know, since he was a colored man, was he a slave? Are there any slave records you can check for his death/burial.

I am still betting the monument is in Enfield because that is what the book is telling us. Is it possible that since he was a colored man, his burial was actually in a pauper area and there would be no record of actual burial. Can you find a location of R. M. Abbe's family plot?

I have found your Stone!
I used the numbers of stones, marked by number, using names of the stones I was able to find all the numbered stones near his. It was a process of elimination and assuring the stones/names matched the book.
Does your hotmail account accept files? I will send the photos to you unless you have another email address to use. You can email me directly
angel1266@cox.net

I did a little more looking into the book. That number "493" is the order in which the gravestones stand. So when the book was written in 1900 I assume perhaps he started at the top of the row and proceded across the rows....That being said I will have a guide to start looking. Using acestors of mine, I know where the stone "439" is so I am going to use that as a starting point...Can't be much further from this one right?

Quite a history indeed! Amazing how things were just a short time ago. Until you start tracing family histoy it may seem like an eternity ago, but really only 3 or 4 generations ago...

I find it impossible that there are no Abbe plots in that cemetery. Abbe was huge in Enfield. I will go look myself when the weather dries out, camera in hand.

Seeking info on Hartford area's Chauncey Pettibone (sonof Abraham-1727-1797) and his children (Chauncey, Elihu, George & Lyndes)

I am looking for information on Chauncey Pettibone (son of Abraham, 1727-1797) and his children: Chauncey, Elihu, George and Lyndes. (I believe that the fourth child is my ancestor.)

Here's information that I've gathered from the wills of Abraham (dated Jan. 17, 1797)and his son Alexander (dated 12 Feb 1801), which I've viewed on the microfilm of the Farmington (CT) district probate courts, Vols 4 & 5 covering 1793 - 1806, as well as the online text of "Genealogical Sketches of the Earliest Settlers of West Simsbury (now Canton, Conn.) with short sketches and Family Records" BY Abiel Brown, ESQ., HARTFORD: PRESS OF CASE, TIFFANY AND COMPANY. 1856. [Re-printed, N, Y., 1899.]

Online link: http://www.archive.org/stream/genealogicalhist00browiala/gen...

Abraham Pettibone was born 1727 and died in 1797 at age 70.

Abraham's first wife was Jerusha Pinney, of Simsbury; for
second, Mercy Humphrey (daughter of Michael Humphrey, and widow of Lieut. Sadotia Wilcox).

Abraham Sr's children by 1st wife: Born. Died. Age.

Abraham, Jun., 1751, 1834, 83. Married 1st, Amelia Smith;
2d, Huldah Prindle,

Jerusha, 1753, 1815, 62. Married Seth Spencer, of New Hartford.

Samuel, 1755, 1778, 23. Died aboard of prison-ship in New York.

Elizabeth, 1756, 1784, 28. Married George Humphrey.

Theodore, 1761, 1821, 60. Married Mary Humphrey.

Chauncey, 1766, 1801, 35. Married Hannah Merrell.

Alexander, 1763, 1801, 38. Married Lydia Humphrey.

Charlotte, 1772, 1855, 83. Married Joseph Dyer.

Theophilus, 1769, 1834, 65. Married Esther Whitmore.

Norman, 1774, 1814, 40. Married 1st Lovisa Nobles, of Westfield, Mass.;
2d. Pamelia Whitmore.

Abraham Sr's children by 2d wife: Born. Died. Age.

Clarissa, 1784. Married Horatio Gates, of Douglass, Mass.; now living, (1856.)

Roxy, 1782, 1848, 66. Married John Beckwith.

Anna, 1786, 1822, 36. Married Norman Humphrey.

In Alexander's will, he leaves part of his estate to Chauncey's children: "Chauncey, Elihu, George and Lynds" (the latter I take to be "Lyndes", the name of my ancestor).

In the will Alexander added: "If my brother Chauncey Pettibone should become a temperate man & so manage his business as in the opinion of my Executor (Note: Alexander's Executor was his older brother, Abraham Jr.), he ought to have the estate which I leave wholly with them (Note: meaning Chauncey's four children, I presume) & earnestly wish might be the case."

So if Chauncy Sr. died in 1801 (as stated above), the same year -- but obviously after -- Alexander's death, it sounds like he may not have become a "temperate man" ... and I wonder what happened to the children, including my potential ancestor Lynds, after their father's death.

My ancestor is Lyndes Willis Pettibone. I have a record of his enlistment (including several desertions) from the War of 1812 (dated 1814 and 1815). I also have him in the late 1840s and early 1850s as a clockmaker in Brooklyn N.Y., where he married Hannah McDermott in 1848. He had two children (Emma & Fannie) and then they moved to Alabama. I have some other documents for him, but not yet any death date or will.

The 1860 census (Burnt Corn, Monroe County, Alabama) gives his age as 47. If that age is true, then the Lyndes on the War of 1812 records would have to be a different, older person (his father, perhaps?). Or did he lie about his age to the census taker?

Fannie Pettibone died rather young; I have her obituary from an Alabama newspaper. I know essentially all the living descendants of Emma, who married a Seymour and was my mother's great-grandmother.

I haven't found any additional info (yet) on the "Hannah Merrell" shown above to have been Chauncey Sr's wife.

I see on Find-a-Grave that a number of these Pettibones are buried in the Milford Street and Dyer cemeteris in Burlington and Canton, respectively.

I would love to get in contact with any researchers who might have information or suggestions or referrals that might help shed some light on this Chauncey Pettibone (Sr.) and his children.

Many thanks,

-- Mike in San Jose
