Donald,

We have William Francis Sturges we believe is the son of George W and Mary Burke born 1908 in Norwalk, Fairfield, CT.

We are having a problem with the name William Legrand. It shows as the father of William Francis, but the dates are just not adding up. (And honestly, we have located NOTHING besides a death notice mentioning his fathers name as Legrand) However, for George to be the father of William Francis they do.

What we have:

George William
B. 22 May 1883 CT
D. Jul 1967 Woodbury, Litchfield, CT
(SSDI 042-24-6998)

md. Abt. 1907 CT

Mary Burk
B. abt 1885

(1910 lists two children born before 1910, 1 living living with Margaret's mother Mary.

1920 shows Magaret, George, William, Mary and Edward living with grandmother Mary Burke.)

1. William (F.L or I?) Sturges
b. 1 Aug 1908 Fairfield CT.
d. May 1972 Pocatello, ID
md. Maud Barrickman

2.

My maternal grandparents owned a home in Newtown from 1967-1983 (approx). I grew up in that house, I remember the house and surrounding area vividly. I know the address. When my grandmother sold it, she said a real estate agency was making it their offices. I've looked online and see where the house is/should be, and though it looks different in many ways, it has to be the house. I was wondering if someone in the area could tell me if the house is currently occupied, and if there is anywhere I may be able to find pictures old or new. Growing up we were told that the house and the house across the street were around in the 1800s, with one being the saloon/livery stable and the other an inn. Is there anywhere I can find the true history of the house?
I would really just love to see it again.

Is anyone out there familiar with where the records of the German Reformed Church in Bridgeport would have ended up when that church disappeared? Also, what might be the most likely cemetery a member of that church might have been buried in during the 1895-1900 period? The next generation up is buried in Park Cemetery but I don't find my great-great grandfather there. (Researching Peter Hohn (also spelled Hein, Hahn, Hine, Hoehn).
Hi --

Any information you could provide, would be greatly appreciated. The Warburtons have proved to be my most elusive family members. As I mentioned in my original post, my great-grandmother was Margaret Warburton O'Brien, the sister of John Warburton, Jr. Margaret and John were the children of John Warburton, Sr. and Julia Miller. I am not sure who John Warburton Sr.'s parents are. His mother may have been named "Sarah." I found John Sr. and his brother Richard living in Esopus, NY in the 1860(?) census. Julia Miller Warburton was the daughter of Benjamin and Maria Miller. They were living in Kingston, NY in 1860. I know that the Warburtons ended up in Brookfield and then Danbury CT and that John Jr. and Margaret had siblings named Annabelle, Frances, and Malissa. This is all I know. If you have anything to add, I would love to hear from you. My e-mail address is:

jamie.a.obrien@verizon.net

Thanks for your help.

Jamie A. Glad I found this one.. there is a lot of info here.

My 3rd great grandmother Harriet Clock (b.abt 1805) is where I begin.
Harriet married Smith Conklin Sammis.
Everything is fuzzy going back from Harriet.
I have Martin, but no spouse listed,
Martin's father John & Deborah Scofield, but no proof...

sigh.
Well.. I have something great, daguerreotype of Harriet. If anyone would like to see it, let me know.

Also, if anyone knows EXACTLY who Harriet's parents were, please tell me.

Thanks.

KT,

Sarah Osborn was the daughter of Captain Richard Osborn b. 1612 in England, d. ca 1685 in Westchester, NY.

Savage has Richard Osborn as one of the first settlers of Hingham, MA in 1635. Indeed, this is confirmed by information in the New England Historical Society Register (NEHGSR) of July 1848 which lists Richard Osborn among the first proprietors in Hingham, who drew their house lots on 18 Dec 1635.
But, a foot note to an article on in the Jan 1929 NEHGSR states that Richard Osborn sailed form London aboard the ship Hopewell, bound, not for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but for Barbados. More light is shed on this seeming anomoly by information from a list dated 17 Feb 1634 listing over 100 men who are to be "transported" to Barbados aboard the Hopewell.(This is published in the NEHGR of Oct 1860.)
The fact that all of the passengers were men whose ages ranged from 17 to 44 and that they were being "transported" is pretty strong evidence that the men aboard the Hopewell, including Richard Osborn, were convicts who were to be indentured servants, or prison laborers, in the colony of Barbados (Barbados was a big producer of sugar cane, a very labor intensive crop). Somehow, Richard managed to leave (escape?) Barbados and is next seen in Hingham, Mass.
He went from there to Connecticut, became a captain in the Pequot Wars and was rewarded for his service with a grant 80 acres of land in Westchester, NY.
I was at surprised, and not terribly pleased, to find that my 8th great grandfather had been a convict. But I now see his life as a sort of "rags to riches" story. Of course, I am left with all kinds of questions. What did he do? Did he steal a loaf of bread or something much worse?
Richard and his spouse Elizabeth _______, had eight children; Hannah, Sarah, David, Mary, Priscilla b Ca. 1650 d Ca. 1710, Elizabeth b. 3 Mar 1650, Fairfield, CT d.3 Mar 1651, John d 15 Jul 1709 Fairfield, CT, and another Elizabeth.
Should you have anyquestions, I'll be happy to try to answer them. Best wishes

I am the 2nd oldest of John Angel's 6 grandchildren. His 2 sons have died. He died at age 79 on Oct 16, 1960. I went to his funeral and knew he was buried in Zoar cemetary but the headstone was carved per his instructions and was done after the funeral. Around 1969 or 70 my husband and I took a ride from NJ to see his studio and look for the cemetery. By chance we stopped in a little general store where we talked to a nice old man who said he was the keeper of the cemetary and took us to the gravesite. I was so glad to have found it. I have seen a lot of his sculptures and watched him work over the years. I hope to visit the area again on a extension of a trip to NJ and perhaps see the old mill and visit the cemetary. I have no idea where he is in the cemetery but I remember that there were wings sculpted on the headsone.

Dear Alma: I don't recognize any of the names in your note, but I'm just getting started with the "Sorqvist'' name. I've been mistakenly trying to trace it for years as "Sarquist'', which is the American spelling used by my wife's ancestors since their arrival in the U.S. around 1890. I'm looking for an Edward Henry Sorqvist (1858-1945), born in Jonkoping and emigrated around 1890. Wife was Augusta Morelius Hermanson. Both died in Chicago. Do you have any suggestions? thanks, Jack Wardlaw.

David Osborn (1686-1727) is my 6th Great Grandfather. According to my notes, his grandson David (1743-1813), husband of Mary Beers, was a Revolutionary War veteran. I believe he served in Capt. Elijah Abel's Co., Col. Philip Burr Bradley's Battalion., Wadsworth's Brigade. He is buried in the Old Cemetery on Fairfield Beach Road in Fairfield, CT. His father Eleazer was a Lieutenant in the Fairfield Trainband and fought in the Colonial Wars. I live in Fairfield County and there are many Osborns buried nearby and several of their colonial houses are still standing. Capt John Osborn’s house built in the Southport section of Fairfield in the 1680‘s, is still standing. I can send you everything I have on the Osborns if you contact me at brian@thelogans.com
