Tim was a tavern owner not a judge. The legend was full of red herrings to fool anyone trying to trace back. Marry Knapp Mesnard couldn't imagine this age were I could verify the information without traveling to England. Very few Knapps lived in Staffordshire and no Timothy Knapps. If Mary stated he was born in Linconshire, I would have had a time of it since that is where the Knapps came from.
