In 1887, Scottish immigrants David and Margaret (Mitchell) Shaw and their three sons, John Shepherd, David Mitchell, and Alexander, arrived in what was then Arapahoe County from Perthshire, Scotland. They homesteaded in Kirk (later Joes) Colorado. All three sons married and became naturalized citizens. John S. married Florence Pratt in 1894, David M. married Florence Harriet Standley in 1896, and Alexander married Elsie E. Boone in 1902.

For more history and photos on the Shaw families, visit the following website: http://www.theusgenweb.org/co/yuma/photos/pioneer/Shaw.htm

Interested in comparing information with any descendants of the Shaws or Boones.
Thanks.

Thursday November 10, 1921 Wray Rattler
John J. Smith, one of the pioneers of this community, passed away at his home in this city last Friday November 4.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lucas, pastor of the M.E. Church, and burial was made in the Grandview Cemetery (Wray).
He was born at Indianapolis, Indiana, May 5, 1848. When a young man he moved to Nodaway County, Missouri where he resided for a number of years. In 1870 he was married to Miss Ann Glaze. To this union six children were born, Martin E. of Wray, Mary D. Lippincott of Mansfield, Washington, Robert E. who died in infancy, Clark D. of Wray,Cora A. Robbins of Denver, and William J. of Wray.
He came to Colorado in 1888, settling on a homestead out near the C12 ranch. He resided on this same farm from 1888 until five years ago, when with his family he moved to Wray. He became a member of the Methodist Church about 40 years ago. He led an honest, upright life, and numbered his friends by the legion.
Some weeks ago, Mr. Smith decided to visit old friends and relatives in Missouri and Arkansas. He started on his journey eastward, but became critically ill when he arrived at Troy, Kansas. He was brought home but continued to fail until the end.

Lee and I had corresponded for many, many years. Having been gone on vacation and just returned I was shocked to hear of his passing (my Mom just told me this morning, had gotten a call from his aunt Beverly & Carl Zion). We also exchanged many emails during the time that his parents died and my father died (the day before Lee's father). I'm glad my parents were able to meet Lee at the Zion Family Reunion several years ago at Wray, CO. He will be missed by all who knew him. I'm still in shock.....

Sandy Zion-Anderson

Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, Thursday, July 31, 1919
GOES TO SLEEP ON TRACK; BODY IS HORRIBLY MANGLED
Charles Chase, age 18 years, of Kansas City, Missouri was instantly killed Tuesday morning at the "narrows" four miles east of Wray when a passenger train struck him and mangled his body almost beyond recognition.
Chase in company with two other youths, Emmet Shared and Robert Stetler, were "bumming" their way from Kansas City to Denver. They were put off the train at Laird and started to walk to Wray. Becoming fatigued, they lay beside the track to rest. They dropped off to sleep. When Chase's companions awoke they called to him but received no reply. Thinking their companion too sleepy to answer Shared and Stetler again dropped off to sleep.
With the coming of dawn the boys awoke and looked for Chase. They found a portion of his body about 300 yards distant from where they slept.

I am particularly interested in Vesta Edith Corwin or vice versa as I think the name "Ginonton" figures in her full name also and it may be a maiden name. Also Jane E. Hedrick Corwin may be Jane Hedrick Evarts or Everett Corwin as her daughter gives her maiden name as Nora Everett Corwin. Confusing on the Jane side. I think Nora had a first marriage and had Vesta. I think she may have married Louis Corwin about 1900 in Yuma Co. Just a guess.

Louis and Nora Corwin had a daughter, Nellie, born about 1908; haven't found anything more on her. FYI, Nora was in Whittier Twp, L.A. County, CA in 1930 with her mother and a brother-in-law (probably her late sister's husband); guess is that Nora is buried in L.A.

Seek information on Wilson T. Corwin who was in Yuma Co., CO by 1900 with second wife, Jane Evarts, and his oldest son, Louis Corwin, b. 1859-60 in IN. Louis's mother was Phoebe Ann Pearce; he apparently married his stepsister Nora Evarts. Another stepsister was Mattie/Cora Evarts. Wilson and Jane also had a son, Otto L. Corwin, b. abt 1882, who had daughters Virgina (b. 1909-10) and Elizabeth (b.1912) with Effie M. Cottingham, dau. of Samuel S. and Margaret E. Cottingham, who evidently also had a son Eller Cottingham.

Would like burial sites if in Yuma and dates of death and any information on Louis' children: Wilson (b. 1901-02), Edward (1904-5), Arthur (b. 1906-7), Nellie (b. 1908) and possibly Vesta E. Corwin Ginonton, b. about 1894, who may be a dau. from a previous marriage of Louis'.

I am looking for information on the children of Encil O and Nellie A Lay who lived in Laird, Co in 1910. According to this Census, the children Alma and Edna were born in Iowa. There may have been a 3rd daughter, Thelma, born in Colorado after the census was taken. Encil continues to be listed in the census of 1920 and 1930, but not with his family. They may have been living in Laird with James L and Mary Jane Lay at the time. I have read that Encil and Nellie divorced, but cannot find record of this anywhere. Any info on these 3 daughters and would be very helpful

FYI,
Just looked up the marriage index, 1859-1939.
There were no Alma Lay, Edna Lay or Thelma Lay's married in Colorado, that matched. There was 1 Thelma, but she was born in Kansas, mother in Nebraska.
No record of any Encil or Nellie remarrying either.
Makes me believe that the family moved out of state.
Good Hunting,
Frank

This Thelma married Hugh Clark in 1929. I believe you can search the 1930 Federal census and find them still in Colorado, Jefferson County.
Good Hunting,
Frank

We are seeking a baseball game account from Wray, CO., played on August 9, 1917. On this day two members of the Baseball Hall of Fame may have played with a club called the All Nations on their way to Denver to compete in a baseball tournament.
Anyone with access to a surviving newspaper from Wray please contact us at: pwgortonmb@hotmail.com
We are trying to establish that this game actually took place.
